[MBZ] 2nd lift for the shop

2022-09-18 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
In my shop I have 3 drive in doors, a large door on one end which is the
main door, and 2 smaller doors on opposite ends from each other.  The
door on the back side of the shop has always been stuck and will not
open.  I had a guy come out and fix it best he could to where it now
will open but does not stay up.  It will need a new spring etc for
that.  I figure I can just stick a clamp on the track when its raised to
hold the door up.  Anyway, now that this door opens it would sure be
great to have a lift between the 2 doors so when I have a dead car, I
can pull it straight in with the tractor or whatever and pull straight
thru out the other side.  I have always said if I get another lift I was
going to get a 4 post.  Can you drive onto a 4 post from one side and
off the other side, or do they usually have stops at the end?  If so,
then I probably need to get another 2 post.  The prices of these things
have gone up a significant amount since I bought mine a year ago.  This
was up quite a bit from when I first started looking at them.  For
example the Chinese lift I have (that works quite well and I have no
concerns with) used to be $1299 or something like that about 3 or 4
years ago.  When I started looking at them again they were less than $2k
and when I bought mine I think I paid $2300 for it.  Now they are right
at $3k.  The alternative is to move the lift I have over but I sure do
not want to do that.  Besides, I have had this 450SEL taking up the lift
space for the last 2 months as I have pulled the tank and been working
on cleaning it out.  Hopefully next weekend I will have it done and the
damn car will start and run so I can move it out.  In the meantime I
have had several other projects I have needed the lift for.  A 2nd lift
would be great in the cases of these long term project.  But jeez, does
one guy need 2 (actually 3 as I have the alignment rack too) lifts?  I
would still like to find a good used lift but so far no luck.

Re: [MBZ] Cleaning out fuel tank

2022-09-18 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Using the shop vac I stuck the hose down into the fuel sender hole and sucked
up a lot of it. I rocked it back and forth moving more chunks into position and
got those too. Was able to get everything out and now nothing is rattling
around in there. I’m sure the tank is not perfectly clean to poos standards but
it’s close enough for government work.

[MBZ] W211 cabin temp sensor removal

2022-09-18 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
On this former poos car that he ripped me off on, the cabin temp sensor is
throwing an error. I order a new one. It is located right next to that ignition
switch. Per the the manual you have to remove the cluster, under dash panel,
and the upper dash board to get to it. Reading the forums did not offer up much
beyond links to the shop manual. I decided to tackle it today. I figured I
could get to it from the top so I removed the cluster. No way to get to it. I
then removed the under dash panel and could not really get my hand up there. I
then removed the plastic spin on deal for the ignition switch and was able to
push it back into the dash. The sensor is literally right there. I was able to
reach a couple of fingers in and twist it to unlock it from the dash and it
then pushed away. Using an instrument cluster removal hook, I hooked onto it
and was able to pull the sensor out of the ignition switch hole. Old one was
full of lint. Removed wiring harness and installed new one. Pushed
it back thru the hole and was able to use 2 fingers to get it into position
and turn it to lock it into place. This is the easy way. Not sure why the
manual basically has you pull the entire dash out.

Re: [MBZ] Cleaning fuel sender

2022-09-18 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I highly endorse MBoC based on several transactions. While I get a good
(wholesale) discount from my local dealer, and exemplary service, there are
times when it just doesn’t make sense to pay their price when I can get it for
much less fro Covington. Even with shipping I come out ahead, even more so
because I don’t pay sales tax.

My dealer said they would meet MBoC’s prices, but the one time I gave them the
opportunity they balked and said they couldn’t do it because it was below
wholesale. If it’s a relatively inexpensive part, fine, I’ll pay the extra coin
to my dealer because they give me fantastic service and can get me stuff
overnight if necessary. However, if the difference is substantial, I’ll go to
MBoC.

Case in point:

I needed the “guts” for my driver’s side exterior rear view mirror because the
mechanism that makes it fold was borked. List was around $300, my local price
was around $240, MBoC was under $200 including shipping. No brainer.

If it’s large or heavy it likely won’t be a deal because of the shipping cost,
but otherwise, they’re the rock bottom on prices from what I’ve found.

Yes, they tend to come up my direction now. In fact a few years ago a possible
tornado was headed right at Okie acres. The wife and kid went to the center
hallway, I watch as it passed. It went right over and shook the house. After it
passed us it did touch down a few miles later.

Re: [MBZ] Tornadoes

2022-09-18 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Basements are not common around here due the the high water table and the soil
is too moist. It also goes from one extreme to the other in that it can be real
dry then real wet. This causes foundations to move slightly. Both of our houses
are in crawls but depending on how wet or dry it is, I can detect slight
variations in how various doors open and close. I might have a door that
slightly drags the frame when opening or closing and other times does not. Most
houses around here these days are built on slabs. These often crack and require
major repair involving piers.

I used to send the wife and kids to the central bathroom when the sirens
blew, then I'd go outside to watch. Never was one, though they did hit a
few miles from us several times. We can just barely hear the sirens from

worry. Besides, the tornadoes seem to have moved north and east from us now.

In the one diff that I had to rebuild back when I was a paid wrench, the
noise was coming from the pinion gear - it was visibly worn. We replaced
the gears and bearings, after waiting months for the special order Volvo
parts, and sent it on its way, happy and quiet.

I'd vote for getting a used diff, inspect/repair it, then do the swap.

My dad bought a new house in the area of Washington, IL that was obliterated in
the 11/17/13. He has a “tornado room” in his basement that is outfitted quite
comfortably. My sister simply has a basement.
I’m sure a legit midwest thunderstorm will wake up this desert dweller, but my
sister assured us she’s wake us up to go to the basement if necessary.

Re: [MBZ] Tornadoes

2022-09-18 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
The house we had in Indiana was like this. While a portion of the basement was
exposed, the part that wasn’t had a constant flow of water under/next to it.
You could hear it running in the drains and sumps (there were two) and you
could set your watch by the pump running, even in the driest parts of the year.

To compound the problem, the idiot that built the place took 1-1/2” PVC from
each pump and ran it into a “Y” right before they exited the foundation to the
run to a catch basin in the back yard. Some serious design flaws here:

1.) If both pumps were running at the same time (and they could) you would far
exceed the volume of water that a 1-1/2” PVC pipe could handle.

2.) The 1-1/2” PVC ran nearly 125 feet to the catch basin it drained into. Do
the math - that made it even more difficult to move an adequate volume of water.

Had we stayed there I would have completely replaced the drain pipe and sized
it to 4”, at least. I would have bumped the output pipes on the pumps to 2” and
run them separately into the drain line and eliminated the “Y”.

This setup was why the basement had flooded in the past. Sure, two pumps had
more than enough capacity to move the volume of water out of the sumps, but the
inadequately sized lines out of the pumps (and putting a “Y” to combine them!)
and the drain line made it impossible to move that water out.

Yeah, in coastal Florida, even if your sump pumps were adequate, what
would the hydraulic pressure do in a flood?

In Michigan, a home where the sump pump runs constantly is troublesome.
If the pump fails, you get a flooded basement within hours.
When we lived in Dewitt, my older brother had a basement bedroom. And
there was an underground river running through our yard, so we had the
worst water table in the neighborhood and constant septic system
problems until the sewer project came through. Dad was more than happy
to pay our share for the sewer hookup.
Imagine getting out of bed and finding yourself in ankle deep cold water
because the sump pump died.

You could probably do a basement where I live in FL, the issues are more
dealing with the ground during construction (sand) and keeping it dry, that is,
having a reliable system to keep water out of it.I don’t think the water table
is that high where I live, but with daily rains this time of year you would
need to have a good drainage system and pump(s) to keep the water away. A
poured foundation and walls would probably help, too. I also wonder what sort
of issues there would be when the ground gets saturated like when a hurricane
comes through - would it make the basement want to lift (float) out of the
ground?

In OK you don't need a deep foundation to get below the frostline, but
it seems like a basement would be a good way to get temperature stable
space as well as storm shelter.

I understand that in most of Florida the water table is probably too
high, but I'm surprised that basements aren't a thing in Oklahoma.
