I really don’t want to screw around with another one of these stuck in park. If
I had that freewheel tool I would, but they are damn near impossible to move
around and get loaded on a trailer without it. All 4 wheels are locked solidly
to the ground.

2023-03-19 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
Our neighbor in the mid 60’s, Mr. Gobin, had one. It was an oddity among the
Fords and Chevys everyone else had.
His second vehicle was a 1948 International Pickup. As a five year old I
remember “Simonizing” one of the rear fenders on that beast and he paid me a
dime. He then piled a few of us neighborhood kids in the back of the “Binder”
(what he called the International), and took us to the Dairy Queen.

Cerium oxide is wicked stuff when it comes to glass polishing. It won’t recover
a really bad windshield, but it will make an improvement no matter what.

about 15 min doing driver half what a huge difference! There are still a bunch
of the little micro pits that I’m not sure could be polished out but the glass

Just mix up a bit of paste with the powder and water and put it on the pad and
have at it just like polishing out paintwork. I kept it a bit damp with a soapy
water solution and kept at it until it kinda dried up and absorbed into the pad
then repeated a couple times.

So the paste is just the powder and water, or is it something that you

[MBZ] Mower pulley needed

2023-03-19 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Long shot but thought I would check.  I need to decide it I am going to
get my Scott (John Deere) 54" mower back operating, just use my JD zero
turn that needs a lot of work, buy a new mower or good used mower, or
look for an old Kubota diesel mower to use this year. Last year I pulled
the deck off the mower to replace the belt and sharpen the blades.  I
ended up dropping the deck upside down so it fell on the primary spindle
that drives the deck.  It also broke the idler arm.  I replaced the arm
but it broke again shortly.  Thinking it got a bad one I replaced it
again.  Got 1 mow out of it and it broke again.  I did not notice that
the drop bent the pulley causing vibrations that would break the arm it
is attached to.  Anyway, I pulled the deck off and this is a dual pulley
and thought I could perhaps knock it back into place but its impossible
to get a good enough angle with the pulley at the other end in the way.
So far it appears I can get a new one from anywhere from low $200s to
close to $300.  I did find this one on ebay but it looks rough to me. If
it is straight and the bearings are good, fine.  But if its bent or the
bearings are bad, no good.  The top pulley is about 6 3/8" x 1", bottom
is 6"x1".  The assembly is 5 3/4 tall.  Anyone happen to have one laying
around?

How much is the time that you are going to spend messing with old mowers
worth to you? That's why I bought a new one 11 years ago - I only have had
to replace the battery once and sharpen the blades.

I really hate messing with mowers.   But I hate spending money on new
ones too.  It is amazing how drastic the prices of these things have
gone up over the last couple of year.  The cheap cheap cheap basic rear
engine small one that used to cost about $800 at lowes is now pushing
$2k.  Insane.  I was looking at that 54" Husqvarna they had down there a
few years ago and was close to buying it.  I think it was a little over
$2k at the time and is now $3k, and from looking at it appears to be a
cheaper more basic version of the one they used to sell.  I am highly
considering spending the same kind of money on an older Kubota diesel
lawn tractor.  These things seem to be build to last forever from what I
can tell.

Buy new parts to repair the mowers you have. Watch for the Kubota you
want and after you get it, sell the mowers you have. If they work, they
are worth something too.

Yes. You just make a paste with the cerium oxide using water and then go at it
with an RO polisher and a finishing pad.

You can buy bags of the stuff off of eBay for cheap.

Re: [MBZ] Windscreen polishing

2023-03-19 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
As Dan says just make a paste with powder and water, toothpaste consistency.
Put some on the felt pad and go at it. Doesn’t take much. I mixed up maybe 3
tablespoons of powder with water and have about half of it left to use later. I
had a spray bottle of water/dish detergent I use on the headlights polishing
and occasionally wet the pad a bit. That might have been counterproductive but
whatever, it worked.

About 15 min each side and it was nicely polished. That scrape was totally
gone. The stuff did get into the tiny pits and I can see it but it will wash
out over time I suppose. I didn’t want to go at it too hard. But the pits are
visible in sunlight anyway so no big deal. I’m very pleased with the results.
You can actually feel it is smooth as glass!!!

I have been kind of thinking about looking at this

I was in town earlier and stopped by lowes to look at what they had. That 54”
Husqvarna that is $3k looks a lot less heavy duty and more expensive that the
previous version of this, and a lot less heavy duty that the mower I currently
have.

[MBZ] Mower engines Kohler vs Briggs

2023-03-19 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
This is just a discussion post of some observations about mowers I have
noticed lately.

Kohler vs B&S.  I was always under the impression that Kohler engines
were better and more heavy duty that B&S engines.  I am not sure if this
is the case or not, or if it depends on the model. For example, this
John Deere made Scott mower I have has a Kohler Command (IIRC) engine
which I believe is sort of a higher end engine than the Courage models.
This is the current model of Husqvarna I looked at today at Lowes:

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Husqvarna-YTH24V54-24-HP-V-twin-Hydrostatic-54-in-Riding-Lawn-Mower-with-Mulching-Capability-Kit-Sold-Separately/1000368437?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-sol-_-ggl-_-LIA_SOL_146_Riders-Powersports-Chore-_-1000368437-_-local-_-0-_-0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlIan_ePo_QIVDBXUAR1k6wItEAQYASABEgIYTvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

This is the old version of this that I looked at a few years ago I
almost bought.

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/148928764741403/?ref=saved&referral_code=null

I did not buy it because my neighbor gave me this Scott mower I am
currently using because it was burning a ton of oil.  I replaced the
head gaskets and it has been fine since.  Have used it for several years
now and it currently has about 340 hours on it I believe.

You’ve pretty much nailed it. Each manufacturer has different levels of quality
which are often the difference between a consumer grade product and an
industrial one. As I recall the Command models were for commercial applications.

“Courage”? Really? I wonder what marketing genius came up with that one?

[MBZ] LED Taillights

2023-03-19 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
When I was driving the ML550 up to Floyd’s last week right after I started out
I got a bulb alert for my right rear brake light. I figured it was unhappy with
the trailer, so I pretty well ignored it until I got home.

I went to check it out today, half expecting that I would have to just clean
the contacts on the socket and be done with it.

I was pleased to find that Mercedes, in their infinite wisdom, still used the
stamped galvanized steel plates for the taillight assemblies, however, the lamp
sockets are now wired directly to the socket! No more lousy connections with
the galvanized steel!

The surprises weren’t over, though, as when I removed the socket for the
affected lamp, there was an LED “bulb” in it!!!

Grrr. Got my box of Philips bulbs and put the proper lamp in it. Checked the
driver’s side as well but it had a stock lamp in it. Replaced it on principle.

Yes. All you have to do is pop a little cover off where the seat belt

Seized how like seized in the bearing and won't turn?

Generally the spindles are pretty simple arrangements. Most cheap mowers don't
have a way to grease the sealed spindle bearings. It's pretty easy to pull the
housings apart and drill and tap for grease fittings. I did that on the
Crapsman at camp, it's been quiet for a long time since...

You can also make sure your outgoing email is less than 1040 kB. More
than once I have had an outgoing email larger than that and got the alert
email. Cancelling the alert, editing the email, and resending took care
of the problem. (Besides fmiser doesn't have the high-speed Internet
others of us do.)

Re: [MBZ] Stupid e320 question

2023-03-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
This is a Snapper RER? (rear engine rider)

They're actually really simple and, as you say, already have the grease fitting.

I've had to fart around with this on mine quite a bit, a couple years ago the
pulley came loose from it's hub. While I had it off I don't remember if the
spindle fell out or if I took it out on purpose, I suspect with that heavy
blade it just fell out. I don't remember there being anything weird about it.

I've also had trouble with the blade getting loose on the spindle. I think I
failed to tighten it enough back when I didn't have an impact gun. I ended up
having to modify the nut a little and it seems good now but I should check it
again in the spring.

Yeah, it’s an electric start maybe 8 hp rear end rider … probably late 70s …. I
have the service manual for it or a similar one, so I’ll read up on it

Maybe easier to fix my slightly newer snapper ($150) that just stopped …. I
think it’s some safety switch causing no spark

I just haven’t studied it

Re: [MBZ] Stupid e320 question

2023-03-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Usually on small engines there is one wire that handles grounding the coil.
Often it wraps around the outside of the engine and has a connector inline
somewhere. If you can find and unplug it the machine is always on which at
least lets you know that the no-spark issue is outside of the engine/magneto.

My 1965 Snapper Comet has zero safety anything. No switches at all in fact, you
shut it down by choking it out. Someday I might put a toggle switch on it but
that's just one more thing to fail...

You know if you really wanted it I’d go get it for you. Duh. I’m retired now. I
have scads of time.
If you want to do a deal, I’ll be the mule.

Does that apply for any of us?
