I could see $7k maybe, with the miles and provenance. It’s sat inside a long 
time as it’s got the “white dot” issue on the instrument cluster. Not surprised.

[MBZ] I was trying to go look at this one -- 2011 Mercedes-Benz gl-class 450, $4, 900

When I bought my 2012 but the guy was not being real responsive plus he 
was asking more for it a few weeks ago.  I kinda like the black/black 
though, it looks pretty good, from Hilton Head which is pretty upscale 
so maybe well maintained.  Auction car, probably got it for very little 
with the age and miles so I was going to offer $4k.  Too late now though.

if the item ever sells for anything near the asking price.

The problem is that if you list it for its true value you drown in inquiries 
from bottom feeders trying to bargain over $50 and who don't have the money or 
intention to buy even at that. Maybe you get that no matter what, I don't know. 
But I'm never going to try selling a $500 car online again. I'd rather get $300 
from the scrapper without all the idiocy. Maybe a $3k price weeds out the worst 
of the idiots. Nothing stopping you from showing up with 5-10 Benjamins and see 
what happens.

These are nice cars. I considered the CLK as a replacement for Mrs. Dan’s 
former SL500. You get sportiness of a coupe with the reliability of a W210/W211.

Exactly this.

I’ve done this on several occasions, not every one being successful. If not, 
chalk it up to experience and hope that you get a call in 2-3 weeks when the 
seller has given up hope of getting rid of it.

When I’ve done this, I usually spend a fair amount of time going over the car 
and afterwards sharing my findings with the seller. If they’re better educated 
they’re far more likely to give you a shot at the car in my opinion. I’ve had 
more than my fair share of situations where i’ve gotten out of the car and seen 
the seller’s car knowing I have no interest, but at that point I tell the 
seller right away it’s not a car I'm interested in but I still follow through 
with going over the car (unless the seller isn’t interested) and giving them 
some feedback on what I see.

Yeah, I’ve now invested the time and effort to go see the car, so I might as 
well have a look just to learn more about the car (in general.)

I’ve had a few instances where the car is a beater and it wasn’t worth the time 
to go over it, so I don’t offer, I’ll just chat the seller up a little and 
offer any suggestions I can think of if they seem receptive.

taking a stance that particularly offended my wife, and she no longer

I took the heat gun out and removed it.  Came off clean, as if it'd
never been there.
