Re: [MBZ] OT - Media For Vibratory Tumbler

2024-06-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Since you are polishing something that is chrome plated, walnut shell is
too soft to do much. Suggest you use the small triangle abrasives instead.
Since you want to polish the parts, not strip them, suggest that you
approach the task in 15 minute sets.. ie run them with the abrasive
triangles for 15, check them, add more scrub time as needed with frequent
checks on progress... a 320 grit triangle scrub, check the parts, if they
clean up, polish them with 400 grit scrub..
Since they are likely plated parts, and you don't know how thick the
plating is, caution is your friend.

I remember ages ago going to the Hamilton Standard plant where wind machine
blades were being made. They also refurbished propellers there.

They had this machine that was full of ceramic pellets that was vibrating like
crazy. I had never seen such a thing. The engineer I was visiting showed it to
me. It was maybe like a 3-4gal bucket size and they dumped parts into it and
let it run for however long. Parts came out all shiny and new looking.

I wanted one.

In going from Phoenix to Los Alamos, I took I-17 one time and decided I
did not want to do it again. The rest of the times we went through Payson
and Heber-Overgaard.

Unfortunately, you don't have that option when you are going to Flagstaff.

[MBZ] OT - Media For Vibratory Tumbler

2024-06-16 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I was looking for something to clean chrome plated hardware used on my pinball
machines. I had a DIY vibratory cleaner thing I bodged up with an old pad
sander that actually worked pretty well. No telling where it disappeared to.

Anyway, I was at Harbor Fright today, looking at a little one of these they’re
closing out. Alas, despite saying there was one in stock at my store, there
wasn’t - at least not other than the floor model, which they won’t sell. Now
searching their website for alternatives, I see a much larger model that’s also
being closed out, and yes, it showed one in inventory. Along with it I got some
walnut blasting media and some ceramic triangles(?)

Anyway, I filled it with about five pounds of walnuts and dropped 10 screws of
different sizes and set my timer for 10 minutes. No difference to speak of. 15
minutes, a little better.

Long story short, how long should I expect to run this thing to get these clean
again? They’re not rusted, just dull from age and playfield wax.

That and if I can’t get the desired results with this, will an ultrasonic
cleaner do any better? What about on plastic parts?

Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] I filled up the CL600 at Costco today

2024-06-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
That's about what we're paying.
I got diesel for $3.59 yesterday which is the least I've paid in years.
The Golf turned in a disappointing 43 mpg over just under 1000 miles, but 400
of that was at 85-90mph.
The eye-talian tune up did it's job though, car starts better and runs smoother
with no visible smoke.

That’s why it’s being sold in an area whose demographics fit the “rich old
white guy” so well.

Typical seasonal Naples car, only driven when they’re down for the winter.

As they used to say about Rolls Royce, if you have to ask

Cars like this are playthings and status symbols. They aren't purchased for
economic reasons.

IIRC, Costco does not do prism (wedge) corrections.

We ordered glasses at Costco for my mom Thursday. She's 1 BU 1 BO on the
right, and 1 BD 1 BO on the left. I just looked it up on the Costco
order sheet.

I'll send the progressive lens price sheet to Craig, Andrew and Dan in a

Most of the lenses are available with prism up to 5.5 or 6.0.

I’ve worn progressives from the start, and have learned that it’s
important to have “tall” lenses so that the transition isn’t too
“quick,” for lack of a better description. When “thin” styles were all

me.

Remember OmniLux?
This started out as a thread about OmniLux.
Some brands of progressive lens can be had with a transition corridor as
tall as 18mm.

OmniLux is 22mm.

Progressives are like no-line trifocals. Most of the induced astigmatism
(swim) on the sides is due to the two spots where the transition is
somewhat abrupt.
OmniLux is a continuous (but not linear) transition from 20 to 1 foot.
You still get the bad areas on the sides but they aren't riddled with
astigmatism.

The good zone on a progressive is hourglass shaped, with the top part
(full distance vision) as wide as the lens, the bottom part (reading
zone) much narrower, and the good zone at intermediate range is
practically a pinpoint.

The good zone with OmniLux is funnel shaped. Again you have a full width
20' zone, and then it gets narrower as you get down towards the bottom
of the lens. Where the narrowest useful area in a PAL is right in the
middle, with OmniLux the narrow part is on the bottom.
