Given the interest in these things from collectors and restorers I would
think that the Brits might have modern repro parts and wiring harnesses
and such for them.  Might not be cheap, but if available...  You can
basically build a E-type from aftermarket parts so there is a whole

There is actually a fair amount of room in the last row, I wouldn't fit
but kids and smaller folks could do OK.  I keep it folded down for more
cargo space but even with them up there is a fair amount of space to
haul stuff.  It's a X164 chassis, is basically all the same bits as a
W164 ML but larger.

This one is like 20min from my buddy's shop, he can probably get it
towed there and deal with it.  Figures his mother would like it and
given he knows how to work on them for $1k or less it's kind of a no-brainer

rear wiper looks to have ED.  Run it and see if it works, it might just
need to be moved on the splined shaft.  If the rear hatch was damaged
and replaced or  painted maybe the badging was not replaced, badge
delete is an option from new too.  I'd definitely get more detail on any
damage if the seller knows anything, but if it looks OK might not be
worth worrying about except as a negotiating point.

Bob,

It’s not so much the ML550, but the W164. It’s a major
improvement over the W163s, far more car-like while still
retaining a lot of the truck qualities that made the W163 useful.

I’m not sure the smaller displacement W164s do much better
economy-wise, so having the ML550 does provide some advantages
when it comes to power and towing. Amazingly, my ML550 got
better mileage while towing a UHaul car carrier with the CL600
on it than running empty. Go figure!

I love mine, despite the crappy mileage. If I’m just tooling
around town I’ll be lucky to hit 16 mpg, but on the highway,
depending on load, I’ll easily hit the mid and upper teens. I
don’t drive that much anyway, so the difference doesn’t really
matter a whole lot to me. It’s a far more comfortable ride, I
think, far less truck-like than the W163, and has more creature
comforts, too.

Mine is approaching 200k without any real issues to speak of. I
bought it with 175k on the clock two years ago for $6500, so the
one you’ve posted isn’t far off based on price and mileage.
Provenance is important on these, and while there’s no major
issues with the W164s that I know of, good maintenance is always
important. This one is really loaded up, with pneumatic
suspension, Parktronic (which is pretty rare on these) as well
as the rear seat entertainment system (DVD player.)

Nice example. I would definitely consider this one if I was
looking for another W164.

2024-07-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I watched a couple of vids about rebuilding 722.6s and 722.9s.  They are
actually quite easy to rebuild, you just have to keep track of the bits
and keep everything really clean.  Stuff just comes apart like a 3D
puzzle and the vids show it very clearly.  I think there are manuals for
it too, I might have downloaded one.  The rebuild kits are like $300,
just some clutches and such.  On 722.9s the pump can go bad and you need
a new front housing of the unit that the pump works in but a junkyard
unit would probably be OK.

The hard part is getting it out of the car without pulling the engine, I
don't know how hard that would be in a R230 but it is probably pretty
tight to get at all the bolts.  A lift and trans jack would help a lot.

[MBZ] how much pain can one boy take? 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG

2024-07-13 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Hoovie just sold his to someone with a high capacity for pain (and
pleasure too).

This CL65 is powered by an AMG-tuned 6.0-liter biturbo V12 which was
hand assembled and signed by the builder. The car is factory rated at
604 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels
through a five-speed AMG SpeedShift automatic transmission. The seller
reports $18k in service performed since 2020 with accompanying service
records viewable in the gallery.

Maybe get it fixed for free!

   Per MBUSA: Eligibility

 Empty heading

 (1) What are the eligible vehicles that will receive an
 Emission Modification?

This settlement pertains specifically to MY09 to MY16 BlueTEC II
vehicles with OM642 and OM651 engines sold or leased in the US.

How Do I Know if My Car Is Affected?

Seven affected models span the 2009-16 model years. All the cars in
question have turbo-diesel engines — some offered as standard equipment,
others as an optional engine — and almost all were marketed as Bluetec.
Similarly, Bluetec-equipped Sprinter vans, sold under the Mercedes-Benz
and Freightliner brands, are affected for the 2010-16 model years.

According to the EPA
,
affected models are:

 * *Sprinter: *2010-16 Sprinter six-cylinder, 2014-16 Sprinter
   four-cylinder
 * *E-Class:*2011-13 E350 Bluetec, 2014-16 E250 Bluetec
 * *GL-Class: *2009 GL320 Bluetec, 2010-16 GL350 Bluetec
 * *GLK-Class:*2013-15 GLK250 Bluetec
 * *M/GLE Class:*2009 ML320 Bluetec, 2010-14 ML350 Bluetec, 2015 ML250
   Bluetec, 2016 GLE300d
 * *R-Class:*2009 R320 Bluetec, 2010-12 R350 Bluetec
 * *S-Class:*2012-13 S350 Bluetec

   What Does the Repair Entail?

The repair comprises a software update and replacement of
vehicle-specific hardware, such as sensors and catalysts. Daimler must
also furnish an extended warranty to cover affected software and
hardware, with tests performed annually for five years to ensure
affected cars continue to meet emissions standards down the road.

Specific repairs vary, and in some cases aren’t even finalized. Twelve
subgroups exist within the affected vehicle population, according to the
EPA
,
with specific repairs for each group. All will receive a software update
and new nitrogen oxide sensors, and any vehicles without a copper
catalyst will get one, as well. Beyond that, specifics vary. As of this
writing, the agency says it’s approved repairs for five of the 12
groups, encompassing the 2013-15 GLK250 Bluetec, 2015 ML250 Bluetec,
2016 GLE300d and six-cylinder 2010-16 Sprinter. Repairs for other groups
are set for approval from now through 2021.

   Will the Repair Cost Anything?

No. Repairs should be free for owners. Under the terms of the
settlement, Daimler will recall and repair vehicles at no cost to
consumers, the Justice Department said.

Yeah just getting a high pressure hose made would be the best way to
deal with it, get the fittings on each end and have at it.  I presume
they could do a 3000psi line easy enough.  I'm thinking $2200 would be a
reasonable deal on that car, the guy is probably done with it... he
looks like a young guy, probably picked the thing up to look cool in,
now it's got problems and he doesn't want to deal with them. Cut his
losses...

yes, but you need a dipstick to measure the actual fluid level.  It's a

codes, then drive the car for a few days at least if it doesn’t goof up. At
that point call it an anomaly, hitting the shifter to the “manual” side, or

the scan he’ll do in a few days after clearing out the cruft will reveal what’s
going on in the present.

I’m no proponent of cheap Chinesium scanners, but for the $150 or so that one
costs, the amount of information you can get from it even if you’re not
planning on doing the work yourself, is invaluable. I especially like the one I
recommended to AZBob, as it has a built-in feature that allows you to email a
copy of the scan results with codes and links to OBDII resources if it’s an
OBDII code. I know Floyd had one that borked, but mine has held up just fine
with limited use.

Scan it and see if you have solenoid codes. Any codes would suggest inability
for TCM to talk to the conductor plate (I’m assuming 163?). The TCM is under
the steering wheel a bit to the left, you can pop off the connector and see if
there is any fluid that has wicked up. If not check the connector at the
transmission for fluid inside it. If those are dry it’s likely CP time which on
a 722.6 is not expensive but a bit of a bother to swap (not as much as 722.9).
Figure $200-250 for new CP and fluid and filter (which you should do anyway if
it’s been awhile). Plenty of utubers on how to do the job. Valvoline Maxlife
is a fluid you can use.

Interesting, I wonder if a cheap connector is the problem with this
99ML320 I have had sitting around forever, I put a new CP in it along
with connector and a newer TCM and it was still in limp mode even after
clearing codes (I used my iCarsoft, which has worked on the $600 99E320
when I did the same job on it, the fancy computer wanted to jump into
HHTWIN and there was no 163 option on the list which was very weird).  I
didn't think the connector might be the issue.  I should try a "good"
one and see if that cures it.  It's an easy swap once you get it lined
up right. And yeah that little bolt is like finger tight.

codes, then drive the car for a few days at least if it doesn’t goof up. At
that point call it an anomaly, hitting the shifter to the “manual” side, or

the scan he’ll do in a few days after clearing out the cruft will reveal what’s

Re: [MBZ] Again, With the Torbo

2024-07-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
so here's the thing -- the estate has some person selling all the
impedimenta, and clearly no one in family or whatever wants this thing.
These estate people have no clue about the worth of cars, esp one that
might have been sitting for years while the owner was incapacitated.
Who knows what all it might need, even if starts and runs -- probably a
complete going-through which is going to cost time and parts money if
you want a reliable driver.

For example, a few years back a friend alerted me to a very similar deal
(non-torbo 79 300CD) wherein the estate woman had listed it at like $3k
or $5k, I don't recall but I think it might have been $5k. I told the
sales woman the car was worth nowhere near the ask so she said go talk
to the deceased's"boyfriend" who was participating in the sale.

The BF said he had never really driven the car so he really knew nothing
much about it. It had been sitting for quite some time under a canopy.
Car was in pretty good shape (white/black leather), it was the
deceased's baby, and had been repainted at some point due to tree damage
or something. I got it running and drove it down the street, the brakes
were pretty bad as the calipers were not really calipering, the rotors
were really rusty, etc.  The rubber under the hood was old too.  No AC
belt, who knows what was up with that.  But it ran well on old diesel
and shifted well so that part of it was solid.

We hemmed and hawed and jawed some, I pointed out the necessities, I was
nice about it but realistic as I walked him through the car.  I offered
him maybe $1000 (LOBALLER!!!), I don't recall exactly and we settled on
$1300 which was a reasonable deal at the time.  BF was actually quite
pleased that someone who knew the car was interested as it would sorta
carry on the GF's love of it. So some emotional aspect to it as well.

So, you could deal with someone who is clueless but thinks it is worth
$10k because s/he looked up sales prices on The Internet for sale prices
of decent runners, or deal with the decision-maker if there is one
around.  You might be lucky if it is some family member who just wants
it wrapped up and get on with life.

I notice the "cold" air inlet tube is missing, not a big deal but
indicative of the kind of stuff that will need to be dealt with.  Given
coupé prices these days, and this one looks pretty nice, but recognizing
it will need thorough going-through and $$$ to get it roadworthy and
dependable, I'd offer $3k and be willing to bump that a bit because you
would still have a pretty good upside on it if you decide to sell it
after fixing it up, or just flip it.  Coupé-specific parts are getting
hard to come by and aren't particularly cheap so think about that if
e.g., the rear windows don't work.  They are cool cars though and fun to
drive, obviously no speed demon but it's about a cool factor.

You should definitely check it out, would be fun to get it running and
driving. AZ color too!  If you buy it see if there is any other stuff
for the car sitting in the garage or a box somewhere, stuff gets tucked
here and there.

Good luck!

[MBZ] 09S550 update

2024-07-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I had ordered stuff to fix the $2500 09S550 -- headlight bulb, brake
pads (break pats), AC blower, front axles, and a lower control arm (ball
joint on one was shot).

Rear brake pads were fairly simple, I did have to remove the calipers
but not a big deal, just required a bit of persuasion.  Rotors were
good.  Front break pads were fine, looked nearly new.

Headlight bulb required removal of wheel and fender liner but then was
easy to swap over.  I had the wheel off anyway to check the brakes.

The AC blower was pretty crapped up and somewhat corroded on the
squirrel cage shafts so I cleaned all that up.  The diagnostic said the
regulator was bad so I ordered another of those along with another fan.
After putting all that in, still no joy, so I checked the 40A fan fuse,
which tested OK for continuity.  I swapped another one in anyway, and
presto! JOY was had as the fan started working.  I kept the new fan in
but put the old regulator back in and kept the new one for a spare, was
only like $35.  I kept the old fan, even with cleaning it all and lubing
it well, it was still a little slow.

The axles were a real pain.  I made up the tool I shared to use with the
slide hammer kit I borrowed from the auto parts store.  Finally worked.
Putting in the new ones required a lot of finessing due to how much room
there was along next to the LCA to slide the spline into the hub.  Not
fun.  I also had a huge problem with the nut on the end of the air
strut, there is a torx hole in the end to hold the bolt end of the
fitting to keep the whole thing from turning, and of course that
stripped out.  Took forever to get it sorted, had to order new bolts
(which were the wrong size), a tap and die set (14mx1.50 should you
care) to chase the bolt and nut.  Lots of torching etc to get it all
loosened up and on and off.  I finally got it all back together.  The
new LCA fit in pretty easily.

Did a quick shakedown drive and all seemed great, axles were good, no
rattles or looseness.  I did have no ABS/ESP due to wheel speed sensor
fault and an airmatic fault for RF wheel.  I had a wheel speed sensor so
put that in right quick.  Both sensors plug into a socket together, I
messed with them some but still had the fault.  Not sure what that is
about, seems like some sort of connectivity issue but I couldn't see
anything.  I could drive the car but no cruise control, and the airmatic
seemed fine.

Next day I drove it to Missisippi, about 500mi the first day, then the
rest of the distance the second day.  I made a stop in Augusta to pick
up 3 wheels, I found 2 others wider for rear, so now I have a staggered
set plus a spare.  Nice AMG design wheels. I hope they fit the rear
without rubbing on the fenders.  I was a bit concerned about the
difference in circumference of front/back due to tire sizes to fit the
different width rims and how it might affect the 4matic but reading up
on it it seems like it should be OK.  Not going to put them on any time
soon anyway but they do look nice. The tires that came with the car are
only like 1.5yo now, good BFGs.

Had no cruise control which was a bit of a pain, watching my speed
constantly because 90 felt like sitting in an easy chair and it was easy
to creep up on that if not paying attention.  Traffic was moving 80-85
most of the way so I kinda just went with the flow.  (I did have a
couple of ohshit moments when I passed a cop hiding in the median)  AC
BLEW ICE COLD which was good because it was 90s-100F most of the time.
No issues whatsoever with the car other than those sensor problems.

I got like 21-24+mpg running at 80+/- the whole way plus some other
highway driving 60-70.  That is pretty damn good for a big car with a
big engine.

Miles. Gal. MPG
458.9 19.2 23.9
312.2 15.1 20.7
170.3 8.1 21.0
129.3 6.1 21.2
233.1 10.4 22.4
342.0 14.0 24.4
192.7 9.3 20.7

Roads in MS were really good, AL almost as good, GA OK, SC sux big time.
You would think "poorer" states would be worse but I was really surprised.

So anyway that was 1800mi or so of driving, the car was amazing.  I am
totally in love with it.  Big, fast, comfortable, quiet, everything you
want a Sonder-Klasse to be.  Huge amount of trunk space, huge back seat
space.  And the black/black W221 looks amazing too, lots of "presence."
I am tall so have my seat all the way back so I can stretch my legs out,
there is still ample room in the back I could probably fit behind driver
seat.  AC kept temps 70-72F the whole time, and cooled down fast. Engine
temp never went above like 85-90C even when sitting with AC running.
Sound system is great (I had to get some adapters to plug my iFōn into
the DVD sound jacks but it works). And for maybe $3200 all in now with
the parts and acquisition cost it is an amazing deal.

So, the story of the cheap S550...

[MBZ] OT Hey y'all ho mah beer n watchiss

2024-07-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

A good neighbor's bad decision. Summerville man dies after placing
 firework atop his head.

James Paul and Jennifer Bent jp...@postandcourier.com;
jb...@postandcourier.com

10–12 minutes

SUMMERVILLE — Wearing an Uncle Sam star-spangled suit and a top hat to
match, Allen Ray McGrew danced around in the front yard as he smoked a
cigarette on July 4th — his favorite holiday of the year. A line of
smoldering firework mortars lined the edge of the street behind him.

Hours later, a firework exploded on top of his head, killing him instantly.

Dorchester County sheriff's deputies found the 41-year-old HVAC worker
lying dead in the road after rushing to the 100 block of Cottonwood
Drive, where an Independence Day Block party had come to an abrupt end
around 10:30 p.m.

Paige McGrew told deputies that her husband had placed the large
firework on his head to "show off" after drinking for several hours,
according to an incident report.

“He was holding this firework over his top hat,” Paige later told The
Post and Courier. “I thought he was just showboating before he set it on
the ground. I didn’t realize he had already lit it.”

His wife was telling McGrew to stop when the firework suddenly erupted
and he collapsed, the report stated.

Coroner Paul Brouthers said the exploding device caused massive head
injuries that would have killed McGrew immediately. He was officially
pronounced dead at the scene at 11:10 p.m.

In her Crestwood subdivision living room on July 5, Paige McGrew sat
surrounded by her dogs, her son Hunter and Hunter’s fiancée, laughing
and crying over her late husband’s antics. Paige said Allen worked hard,
played hard and ultimately died doing what he loved. His death came less
than a month before his 42nd birthday.

“Allen loved this holiday," she said. "He was a patriot; he was proud of
his son and he was excited to have a new daughter-in-law. He was living
his best life last night.

Allen had been looking forward to adding a daughter to the family and to
celebrating his son’s engagement. Getting fully into the holiday spirit,
McGrew had gone all out, Paige said, recalling how he slid into her
office like a showman, wearing his brand-new Uncle Sam costume —
overalls with red and white striped bottoms with a blue field and white
stars up top, along with a fake white goat strapped beneath his chin and
the top hat. He also wore a T-shirt with a patriotic red, white and blue
design.

“I was on the phone with a client and I just lost it, I was laughing so
hard. I had to tell her what was going on. The client said, ‘Oh, I have
to see this,’ so Allen came around in front of the camera to show off
his costume,” Paige recalled. “That was Allen. He was a genuine, good
person and he loved life. He worked hard and he played hard.”

She showed The Post and Courier a video of her late husband dancing a
jig in his red-white-and-blue outfit on the front lawn. Neighbors up and
down the street gathered to enjoy McGrew’s delight in the hours before
the tragedy fell.

According to Paige, Allen told his son on the night of the incident that
this Independence Day celebration would be their official father-son
blowout to celebrate Hunter’s wedding day and his engagement. Then he
planned to stop drinking for a while.

“Alan was not a drinker,” said Paige. “Everyone was drinking a little
last night, but he didn’t drink regularly.”

In Dorchester County, fireworks are permitted on July 4 from 10 a.m. to
1 a.m. on July 5, according to local ordinance. Dorchester County
Sheriff's Lt. Chaz Easterlin said the firework involved in McGrew's
death was legal.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in 2023 received eight
reports of fireworks related death and 9,700 injuries. Out of the eight
deaths, five were associated with firework misuse, two with a device
malfunction and one with unknown circumstances, according to the commission.

Those around Allen McGrew described him as a kind father and generous
neighbor who was always willing to lend a hand.

A man who lives across the street, and who wished to remain anonymous,
said July 3 was the first time this year he’s mowed his lawn because
McGrew would just come over and cut it every time he trimmed his own grass.

Paige said he actually cut the grass for about five neighbors.

“He was the nicest guy. He was the kind of guy you want for a neighbor,”
said the neighbor, an Army military intelligence veteran, who came out
early July 5th to clean up signs of the accident left in the asphalt.

“He didn’t suffer; it was quick.”
