[MBZ] OT Super Beetle Fun

2021-05-31 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
https://youtu.be/jzB1Vc1h-Tc

Let's see, what would it be like to have 500+ WHP in a 1973 super beetle?

He says the car weighs about 2000 lbs, I'm thinking it's more like 2500 lbs
with the added motor weight and the roll cage.

2021-05-30 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
You need another OM603 machine.

Last week I put the battery back into my '87 wagon and gave it a good
wash. Been driving that for the last few days, what a great engine, and
such a smooth and comfortable ride. I really need to get off my butt and
convert the '94 wagon over to OM603 or perhaps OM606.

[MBZ] OT More Good News in the war on the virus

2021-05-06 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Peer-reviewed study in the American Journal of Therapeutics has identified
a very effective drug for use against the Wuhan Red Death (aka COVID-19).
The drug not only will help to prevent infection, it can be used to treat
an infection, and also is extremely effective for those patients with
post-COVID-19 syndrome (lingering and sometimes debilitating condition
after infection).

https://journals.lww.com/americantherapeutics/fulltext/2021/0/review_of_the_emerging_evidence_demonstrating_the.4.aspx?fbclid=IwAR2lQQmnlvALejyMjPHoWQiRJxY9AoHCPljTO9uh8CTh4QkK_odmDmTXSZI

Selected highlights from this study are shared below.
Conclusions:

Meta-analyses based on 18 randomized controlled treatment trials of
ivermectin in COVID-19 have found large, statistically significant
reductions in mortality, time to clinical recovery, and time to viral
clearance. Furthermore, results from numerous controlled prophylaxis trials
report significantly reduced risks of contracting COVID-19 with the regular
use of ivermectin. Finally, the many examples of ivermectin distribution
campaigns leading to rapid population-wide decreases in morbidity and
mortality indicate that an oral agent effective in all phases of COVID-19
has been identified.

Exposure prophylaxis studies of ivermectin's ability to prevent
transmission of COVID-19

Data are also now available showing large and statistically significant
decreases in the transmission of COVID-19 among human subjects based on
data from 3 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 5 observational
controlled trials (OCTs) with 4 of the 8 (2 of them RCTs) published in
peer-reviewed journals.40–
Clinical studies on the efficacy of ivermectin in treating mildly ill
outpatients

Currently, 7 trials that include a total of more than 3000 patients with
mild outpatient illness have been completed, a set composed of 7 RCTs and 4
case series.49–60

The largest, a double-blinded RCT by Mahmud49 was conducted in Dhaka,
Bangladesh, and targeted 400 patients with 363 patients completing the
study. In this study, as in many other of the clinical studies to be
reviewed, either a tetracycline (doxycycline) or macrolide antibiotic
(azithromycin) was included as part of the treatment. The importance of
including antibiotics such as doxycycline or azithromycin is unclear;
however, both tetracycline and macrolide antibiotics have recognized
anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and even antiviral effects (58–61).
Although the posted data from this study does not specify the amount of
mildly ill outpatients versus hospitalized patients treated, important
clinical outcomes were profoundly affected, with increased rates of early
improvement (60.7% vs. 44.4% *P* < 0.03) and decreased rates of clinical
deterioration (8.7% vs. 17.8%, *P* < 0.02). Given that mildly ill
outpatients mainly comprised the study cohort, only 2 deaths were observed
(both in the control group).
Clinical studies of the efficacy of ivermectin in hospitalized patients

Studies of ivermectin among more severely ill hospitalized patients include
6 RCTs, 5 OCTs, and a database analysis study.45,51–53,63–70

The largest RCT in hospitalized patients was performed concurrent with the
prophylaxis study reviewed above by Elgazzar et al.45 Four hundred patients
were randomized among 4 treatment groups of 100 patients each. Groups 1 and
2 included mild/moderate illness patients alone, with group 1 treated with
one dose 0.4 mg/kg ivermectin plus standard of care (SOC) and group 2
received hydroxychloroquine 400 mg twice on day 1 then 200 mg twice daily
for 5 days plus standard of care. There was a statistically significant
lower rate of progression in the ivermectin-treated group (1% vs. 22%, *P*
< 0.001), with no deaths and 4 deaths, respectively. Groups 3 and 4

Ivermectin in post-COVID-19 syndrome

Increasing reports of persistent, vexing, and even disabling symptoms after
recovery from acute COVID-19 have been reported and that many have termed
the condition as “Long COVID” and patients as “long haulers,” estimated to
occur in approximately 10%–30% of cases.71–73 Generally considered as a
postviral syndrome consisting of a chronic and sometimes disabling

[MBZ] OT Good News, 81% have pre-existing immunity to Wuhan Red Death

2021-05-03 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
A study that appears in Nature concludes that 81% of the population have
pre-existing immunity to the virus.

"T cell immunity is central for the control of viral infections. To
characterize T cell immunity, but also for the development of vaccines,
identification of exact viral T cell epitopes is fundamental. Here we
identify and characterize multiple dominant and subdominant SARS-CoV-2 HLA
class I and HLA-DR peptides as potential T cell epitopes in COVID-19
convalescent and unexposed individuals. SARS-CoV-2-specific peptides
enabled detection of post-infectious T cell immunity, even in seronegative
convalescent individuals. Cross-reactive SARS-CoV-2 peptides revealed
pre-existing T cell responses in 81% of unexposed individuals and validated
similarity with common cold coronaviruses, providing a functional basis for
heterologous immunity in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Diversity of SARS-CoV-2 T
cell responses was associated with mild symptoms of COVID-19, providing
evidence that immunity requires recognition of multiple epitopes. Together,
the proposed SARS-CoV-2 T cell epitopes enable identification of
heterologous and post-infectious T cell immunity and facilitate development
of diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic measures for COVID-19."

Curt, you forgot to include this part of their disclaimer:

PMC is a repository of content primarily from two sources: peer reviewed
journals that overall have met NLM’s standards for PMC
<https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/about/guidelines/#sciqual>; and peer
reviewed author manuscripts deposited in compliance with the public access
policy of NIH or other collaborating funders
<https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/about/public-access/>.

So by your logic, the New England Journal of Medicine is "just a
repository" and peer reviewed means nothing?

[MBZ] OT Nose spray kills the WRD

2021-03-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
https://news.trust.org/item/20210322142323-9i5gq

JERUSALEM, March 22 (Reuters) - Israel and New Zealand have given interim
approval for the sale of biotech firm SaNOtize Research and Development's
Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray (NONS) which could help prevent transmission of
the COVID-19 virus, the company said on Monday.

Manufacturing of NONS, under the brand name Enovid, has begun in Israel
with SaNOtize's partner Nextar Chempharma Solutions Ltd and it is expected
to be on sale there this summer.

In New Zealand, SaNOtize has registered its nasal spray with the New
Zealand Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority, which permits the
company to distribute and sell NONS over the counter immediately, the
Vancouver-based company said.

NONS protects users from viruses that enter the body through the upper
nasal pathways.

Last week, SaNOtize and Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation
Trust in Surrey, UK announced results of clinical trials showing that NONS
was an effective antiviral treatment that could prevent the transmission of
COVID-19, shorten its course, and reduce the severity of symptoms and
damage in those already infected.

Chris Miller, SaNOtize's chief science officer, said its formulation of
Nitric Oxide for use in humans is designed to "kill viruses in the upper
airways, preventing them from incubating and spreading to the lungs."

Re: [MBZ] Why would anybody want to live in CA?

2021-03-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Insanity! And California is held up as a model for the rest of the US to
follow?

Get this:

"Many are wondering how these laws will be enforced. One member of the
*Grassroots
Motorsports*

forum claims he has already been fined $430 for violating the code.

"I have not been left alone, they levied a $430 fine yesterday. You can
request a hearing to review the code enforcement decision, which costs $700
to complain," he wrote."

So if you get a fine for breaking this draconian law, and you want to
challenge this in court, YOU NEED TO PAY MORE THAN THE FINE TO GET A COURT
HEARING!

[MBZ] Herd Immunity?

2021-03-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
In the USofA, 30M documented cases of Wuhan Red Death, probably at least 2x
to 5x of that are not documented. Add to that 118M vaccinations, so we
probably have about 200M out of 330M with some level of immunity. Another
30 days, another 30M vaccinations, we should be well over the 2/3 threshold
that is commonly accepted as herd immunity.

https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccinations

Watch for the death rate to fall to near zero over the next several weeks,
that will be your evidence that it's over.

Re: [MBZ] OT Indy COVID vaccine logistics

2021-03-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Curt - we were vaccinating over 1 million per day under Trump, and Biden*
has managed to keep that going, so we are north of 70 million vaccines now.

About 30 million people have had the infection and recovered, estimate
somewhere around 5x or more that had the infection - were asymptomatic /
never tested, and we're probably at about 250 million out of 330 million
that have some level of immunity, which is in herd immunity territory.

Parties over, death rate is plummeting like a rock, the pols will need to
find a new emergency soon.

[MBZ] OT Bathroom Vent Fans - Vent half-bath to attached garage?

2021-03-07 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I've got a downstairs half-bath (toilet and a sink) right off the kitchen,
and the vent fan is a ductless that simply recirculates the air through a
charcoal filter.

I'd really like to make this a vented fan, but there are no exterior walls
nearby, but it would be relatively easy to vent into my garage.

Good idea, or bad idea?

The vent will primarily move odors out of the house, which although smelly
will be 'dry' air conditioned air, because there is no shower or bathtub -
just a half-bath.

Larry had difficulty getting that intake back on so the glow plug wires

[MBZ] OT The next IT revolution: System Oriented Programming?

2021-02-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Dan and others in the IT field, Is this a thing?

https://www.softwarebusinessgrowth.com/doc/end-of-silicon-era-is-at-hand-software-about-to-change-in-big-way-0001

By Jay Valentine, ContingencySales.com

Moore’s Law means hardware gets about twice as fast every 24 months as
chips can have smaller footprints. We are reaching the end of silicon-based
efficiency because the laws of physics mean the etching on chips cannot get
all that much smaller.

Some say the age of quantum computing lies ahead. Probably for some
scientific apps or weather forecasting, but for business computing, quantum
computers are not going to be a big seller any time soon. Applications
would have to be rewritten in code for which there are few if any
programmers. Quantum computers are not the next big thing.

Highly efficient, optimized software stacks are the future. And that future
is at hand!

Software, particularly the DevOps movement, has been the lazy uncle in this
equation for over a generation. Software has not had a major architectural
innovation impacting speed or efficiency – ever. Software tagged along with
faster hardware, cheaper processors hiding the inefficiency of its bloat.

A typical tech stack from the hardware up has a data management layer,
middleware, virtualization, security, app code, a user interface. Each
layer is general purpose. That means every layer has every conceivable
feature, 95% of which no one customer needs. But they remain and must be
supported.

Each layer introduces I/O wait states. Every I/O wait state means the CPU
is wasting time not doing anything productive; the application is flailing.
A flailing app eats up energy and compute resources, with no productive
business outcome.

Software engineers once delivered purpose-built apps based on knowledge of
how a CPU works. They wrote applications that pipelined data in its most
efficient form.

Today’s software is too expensive to license, too difficult to maintain,
and too slow to offer anything close to business agility.

Then there are the secondary inefficient software costs: data centers
sprawl to cover entire city blocks and consume what is estimated to be 3% -
5% of the energy grid.

Eliminating or reducing the data center footprint is now the largest
energy-saving opportunity for a major corporation. As the need to conserve
power increases, firms will pay more attention to lowering the energy
footprint of those data centers.

The best option at hand to reduce those costs and save energy is to
dramatically increase the efficiency of software.

That efficiency, measured in elimination of I/O wait states thus optimizing
the processors, is fast becoming the domain of System Oriented Programming.

System Oriented Programming is the next step up from microservices. A
microservice makes code reusable, cuts programming time, takes advantage of
containers, yet runs with pretty much the same efficiency as the technology
it replaced.

System Oriented Programming delivers a micro APP.

That app has built in the full tech stack it needs to operate. The data
management, middleware, security, and even GUI are purpose-built for that
micro-app.

If the micro app needs to manage cell call billing, its data management
understands how cell phones generate transactions. If it needs to manage an
electric meter with unique types of data feeds, that comes as part of the
data management layer.

The result is efficient use of the machine processor. Reducing I/O wait
states makes a micro app run 1,000 to a million times faster. That’s a
pretty good result if you are looking for transformation.

System Oriented Programming is a difference of kind instead of just a
degree.

The micro-app costs 1/10th the cost of an app using traditional technology.
It uses 85% less storage. It can be built from scratch in a quarter.

One of the most common ways to introduce System Oriented Programming is to
build a parallel app for a QA process.

One can take a typical billing system, build a parallel app in a quarter,
watch it run 1,000 times faster, use it as a QA checker for every
transaction, then after a month, a year, or several years eliminate the
legacy app and reap the benefits.

System Oriented Programming offers a means of dramatically reducing data
center footprints by replacing entire rooms of servers with a single IBM Z
Platform or a wall of inexpensive Intel NUCS.

Energy reduction, greenhouse gas reduction, cost reduction, and increased
business agility – these are all readily achievable with increased software
efficiency provided by System Oriented Programming.

Nice score! I've got a 3 inch 12v fan from an old UPS that I'm going to
re-purpose as a ventilation fan, solar powered, in my sailboat. It draws
some very small current, I'm thinking it is 25 mA or so. Planning to put a
50W panel on a controller to both charge the boat's deep cycle battery and
run the fan, with a fan cut-off at 12.5 volts or so.

If I had one of those big fans it would be mo-better, but I'd have to
fabricate a new hatch and install that fan in the hatch, with some type of
weather cover to keep the rain out.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Here Is Why Texas Is Dark

2021-02-17 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I think the truth is that both the "greedy" power companies and the "green"
power forced by the government have a share of the blame, and so I would
rewind the clock to a point in time when the green power was not there, and
see if there were similar power outages in cold weather events. If
removing the green power from the situation results in stable power during
unusual cold, then I guess you have your answer.

How come the experts (engineers) and the scientists are not listened to
when it comes to a basic need like electrical power?
