[MBZ] why benz?
Folks i learned to drive in a 1951 plymouth and took my driving test in a 1966 Ford Ranch Wagon with stick shift on the column and overdrive about 1970 Then i mostly drove air cooled VWs with a bad luck Audi 90 wagon and a few american pickups thrown it, for the next 25 years. We even ran a VW shop and probably rebuilt 100 engines, personally. About 1985 someone pointed out a Peugeot diesel wagon, 504, aBOUT 1976. I bought that and spent the next 5 or 6 years messing with peugeot diesel engines in 504 and 505 cars, mostly wagons. They would all have cracked heads at about 100k miles. Anyway, Peugeots are very nice cars. Finally i got smart and switched to Peugeot gas cars. Turbo or non turbo, i never had a major engine problem with a gas peugeot (only a few water pumps, hoses, etc) and i drove them up until 7 or 8 years ago. A good friend had a very nice 1982 300td that he was ready to sell. I bought it probably about 2000 or so and gave it to my wife to drive. Pretty soon it was mine and since i'm 8 or 9 years into the WVO experiments i continue to use it as my daily driver although i have 3 or 4 other diesel mercedes on the road. Mercedes has by far the best old diesel engines, at least in the 123 cars which are all that i really know. I much prefer the comfort and handling of a nice Peugeot 505 wagon. So, for me, i guess a 617 engine in a peugeot wagon would be great! thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] old benz motor home
I sent the motor home ebay listing to my german buddy here in athens. Here's what he wrote: Both Thomas and i knew Uschi Obermeier and Dieter Bockholt , he owned a bar in HH that we frequented . At least we saw them come in and out when they where prepping for their journey Anyway they traveled the world in one of those OP 311. In 2006 i think a movie came out based on her story about them called “ Das wilde leben” you can watch it on netflix, i believe at least, i have before . The english title is "8 miles high” . They recreated the bar for the movie in the proper location and similar decor . It is really more about her life then his . She is quite a celebrity in germany . She was a Groupie?/Model , he was a pimp on St pauili . He died on a motorcycle in mexico at the tail end of their relationship . She is now a US citizen living in CA . The movie is worth watching if you can find it . I reckon they used the correct motorhome in the movie if memory serves me right . It entertaining enough . I don’t know about the you tube version as it has partial nudity in the movie . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1UQ5OE_32c http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0764639/ https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uschi_Obermaier thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] amoco white gas
folks amoco white gas as sold in SC and georgia in the 60's and 70's was high test and lead free i always ran it in coleman stoves without problems here's what wikipedia says: American Oil chose to continue marketing its premium-grade "Amoco-Gas" (later Amoco Super-Premium) as a lead-free gasoline by using aromatics rather than tetraethyllead to increase octane levels, decades before the environmental movement of the early 1970s led to more stringent auto-emission controls which ultimately mandated the universal phase out of leaded gasoline. The "Amoco" lead-free gasoline was sold at American's stations in the eastern and southern U.S. alongside American Regular gasoline, which was a leaded fuel. It can be shipped relatively cheaply in USPS flat rate boxes …. 14 or 15 lbs fits in the small one that ships for less than $6 …. move in the larger boxes, but it has to be packed very securely. [MBZ] more testing my mercedes 300td AC
Folks So i did some inspection on the dead battery when it didn't respond to charging overbite The top side was blown out on the positive side. A check with a meter indicated that i was charging at about 16+ volts I grabbed my trusty Uro voltage regulator from the glove box and installed it from above with not too much difficulty. The removed regulator was an old bosch i had scavenged from a blown 240d 3 or 4 years ago. The brushes on it showed some wear. The Uro works but i no longer had the borrowed meter and there wasn't one in my car, so i still need to check the charge voltage. Am i correct in thinking that a bad regulator can cause an overcharge condition. i notice that i can now buy the Uro or identical regulators direct from HK or China for about $6.78 delivered …. if they work, i need a couple in every 123 car. What other regulators are available and at what price points? I guess i'd pay $18 for a Bosch made where? India? China? Hellas? Just wondering what you've been using and success rates. thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins www.javaphoto.com www.javacycles.com LETTERPRESSES FOR SALE www.ricktheprinter.com www.letterpressmachinery.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] testing my mercedes 300td AC
Folks i've been out testing the 82 300TD AC and car. I replaced the r4 compressor again about 2 weeks ago. Last week i dragged a 1500 lb printing press to Tupelo, MS from athens, ga relatively uneventfully. As i left there i had no vacuum or boost on the brakes. Fortunately, the trailer was unladen on the return trip. Back in athens, i was preparing to change the vacuum pump but got the idea to blow out the check valve of the pump. I had already flushed it with some solvent. I blew it out with the air hose last week and i've had good boost ever since. So, Tuesday afternoon, i went out for another test. I drove 600 miles to indianapolis, in. There i picked up a 1000 lb press and probably 500 lbs of lead type. I turned around and left indy about 5 pm wednesday and made it back to athens about 4 am. I stopped at the i-75 georgia welcome center about 1 am and made some coffee. When i started back up the starter made a weak GRRR sound and barely turned the hot engine over … which fortunately started instantly. I decided, wisely, that i shouldn't shut it down. I had some much crap in the car that i couldn't have much hope of finding the meter, so i never checked for charge. As i was on the home stretch about 10 miles out, i noticed that the lights dimmed slightly when i put the AC blower on high fan. When i got home, the starter wouldn't turn the engine over. i am charging the battery now to start it and check the charging. The alternator belts are tight and i guess i should check the rear wires to the alternator. So, AC test successful …. alternator test, less successful. I drove about 2000 miles in the last 8 or 9 days …. 1000 miles dragging 1500 lbs … ac works brake vacuum still good and maybe i'm not charging. Had i realized that i wasn't charging, i'd have unplugged one headlight to diminish the load on the battery Not doing anything special i seem to have had 3+ hours of running with radio and AC and lights, etc …. which is pretty good. thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins www.javaphoto.com www.javacycles.com LETTERPRESSES FOR SALE www.ricktheprinter.com www.letterpressmachinery.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] florida winter Q
Folks i could be persuaded to go down to florida in say jan feb march…. try to plan it not on spring break holiday times, i guess i'm considering getting a vintage early 90's RV … specifically an isuzu npr chassis Safari Trek 1991 isuzu chassis and 1992 model trek. The one i'm working on has been parked down in south alabama (in a shed) for 2 or 4 years … someone inherited it and that is the seller sort of a pig in a poke deal, but cheap, cheap for a class a 26 footer my guess is that if it has relatively clean diesel that it will fire right up with some batteries tires and brakes might be more problematic, but this is all speculation they are supposed to have good fuel mileage (12.5 to 16 mpg owners claim which is about like my NPR with a 16 foot box) and i can run one on WVO just like my NPR so maybe i'll be riding around in that thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins www.javaphoto.com www.javacycles.com LETTERPRESSES FOR SALE www.ricktheprinter.com www.letterpressmachinery.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] latest 1982 300td ac saga
Folks, i did a stupid thing but it;s fixed now. After the r4 ac compressor blew its housing a month ago, i had to fix it. I bought a compressor on amazon and a receiver drier on ebay or somewhere and found some more straight mineral oil and assorted seals and orings and etc. I went to my ac expert. He hung the compressor and i hung the receiver. He's younger than my 61 years and refuses to wear glasses. We were working at his place about 40 miles north of here. We evacuated and charged the system with some of my r12 stash. About 10 miles south of him, headed to athens, i stopped for a few minutes and then when i started again, NO AC. I stopped and looked at it and saw that the ac belt had broken but the compressor was still free. The next day we tried to install the belt and noticed that the pulleys didn't line up. A little research by looking at some of my failed compressors determined that the R4 installed on the Benz had an incorrect pulley for a benz. So, the AC guy who refuses to wear reading glasses installed the compressor with a pulley that was a belt width off alignment …. a guaranteed failure. SO, since i didn't want to pull the compressor and recharge the system, i started studying how to remove the pulley. The compressor i bought was just some random r4 for a GM application. I thought they all had the same pulley setup. Anyway, i watched some videos by BOB on youtube about removing and installing the clutch and pulley. Fortunately, auto zone has LOTS of ac tools to borrow. I got a bunch of pullers and such and easily took one apart on the bench. Can it be done in the car …. Yes, with some effort. I had to remove the radiator and then there is just enough room. There are a bunch of details. … snap rings and beys in the shaft. So, probably 12 man hours later or more (not including time researching the procedures) i am back on the road with ice cold AC. So, i was stupid for buying the wrong part. My AC guy was even stupider for installing it And i was even stupider that that for not comparing old and new part and not inspecting the job better. He DOES do a good job …. his work has held pressure (no freon added) for the 3 or 4 year life that is the max i've ever gotten out of an R4 Take heed and learn from my mistakes. No animals were harmed and no freon was vented. Now i'm off to Tupelo MS to deliver a 1500 lb printing press as soon as i get the press ready and loaded. I hate hauling the ones that are that heavy. thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] ac compressor failure 300td 1982
Folks my perfect running 3 month old R4 compressor failed today. AC had been running for maybe 2 minutes and i was going probably 10 mph. Outside air temp about 90f. As i started off i heard and explosion POW and i assumed i had had a blowout, then i saw a puff of oil smoke come out from under the hood. The new in MAY compressor seems to have popped open and, of course, let out all the oil and R12. I'd driven it a couple of thousand miles since the repair which consisted of a good flushing, new drier, R12 and conventional refrigerant oil/ Compressor had been the quietest & smoothest i'd ever had. I haven't checked but i don't think the compressor actually mechanically failed because there was never any noise beyond normal email me directly if you want to see photos … i'm not messing with emailing them to the list i hat it because it's HOT compressor was brand new not rebuilt from ebay $150 or so and supposedly warrantied but no labor, i'm sure We'll see I need to do it all again because i have about 3000 miles of running around and dragging stuff to do in the next month and the midwest is hot just like georgia Have any of you ever seen such a failure thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins www.javaphoto.com www.javacycles.com LETTERPRESSES FOR SALE www.ricktheprinter.com www.letterpressmachinery.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] 1982 300TD TRIPPING TO FLORIDA
Folks, I few weeks ago dragged a letterpress down to our place on tybee island and cleaned it up and printed a few business cards on it. Some kids called me from St Augustine Beach and were looking for a press. I told them to come see me on Tybee. They drove up to Tybee and tested the machine out. They wanted it. So, Friday i loaded the 1000 pound machine on my trailer, filled up with WVO and headed for florida. I left tybee about 2.30 pm and ran about 70 mph down I-95 in the on and off rain with the AC ice cold. I love that R12. The last hour or so was a downpour! After a couple of stops, i reached St Augustine Beach about 7 pm. We unloaded and installed the press and i was paid and was out of there by 9 pm. I grabbed a pizza and left St Augustine about 9.30 pm and was back in Savannah by 12.30 pm ….i ran 70 to 75 on the return trip, some rain and full AC. You may be moving your personal belongings to a new house or, as a hobby, you may be taking your horses to a horse show. As long as the activity is not in support of a business, the Federal hours-of-service regulations do not apply to you. HOWEVER in the same section they discuss driving an empty truck and the fact that even if you are not hauling you are still commercial I'd hate to try to convince the DOT guy that i was using my commercial truck recreationally … The DOT guy is going to say you are commercial. i've done lots of jobs where i was moving people's personal effects which could even include a printing press. thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] 123 300td AC
So, we removed the frozen compressor (new 4 seasons ago or less) We flushed about half the system with printing blanket/roller wash and blew it out we added about 8 oz of mineral oil to the compressor and the new drier We installed a new $152 ebay compressor and the amazon $11.50 drier (Behr branded from china) We replaced a bunch of green o rings wherever we opened something We used the $17 set of compressor sealing rings We evacuated and charged it with genuine R-12 and …. voila …. 40 degree cold AC it took two of us about 5.5 hours … i'm a decent mechanic and the other guy is an AC expert, but we're both about 60 and it takes longer than it used to i'll take it down to SAV in a few days and test it out how long will it last, who knows 3 years sucks and 5 years would make me ecstatic! [MBZ] mowers and 123 AC
I don't do all that much mowing, fortunately. I have a honda powered self propelled "push" mower that is ok …. i bought it for $75 in SAV. As for a lawn tractor, i'd go with a $1000 or $1500 kubota diesel mower … altho i know few specifics, i know lots of mini farmers with kubota stuff and they are happy with them. A ten year old Kubota would HAVE to be better than the MTD crap a lot of which is made in south georgia, i think. MTD makes all brands like Electrolux for appliances. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTD_Products My AC expert is coming down today and we're going remove the compressor and dryer on my 82 300td. The 4 season ago new unit seized in the fall or spring We'll do some flushing and reinstall and recharge with R12 I'd like to hope it would go longer than 4 seasons. In about 1976 i bought a VW bug …. an old one, not a split window, but i think a 54 or 55. It ran and we drove it around a little and then parked it in a garage.
