They work on just about everything, but they specialize in Mercedes from
1960+. All four of the mechanics have a combined 140 years of experience
working on German cars. We have used them for over a decade and couldn't be
happier with the service.

Who is this indy? Would you trust him with an older model?

I assume you mean local to Cary, not China. :)

Thanks,

but far from specifically diagnosing the problem.

Also, there are supposedly different 'banks' of codes, so to speak,
 held

'bank'

the diagnostic module, the proper scanner and diagnostic connector is
required.

I would be cautious using any kind of homemade reader, or any other
'cheap'
reader for that matter, as all of the car's control modules are right
there
connected to the CAN bus. One plug in of a faulty scanner may be all
it takes to zap all of the control modules ($$$ to replace at $1,500+
 a
piece
 from the dealership).

There is a great website that I like to visit now and again by an
 S500
coupe
enthusiast who goes by his (what I assume to be) Ham Radio handle of
K6JRF.
The website can be found here: http://www.k6jrf.com/MB_S500.html

He has a lot of great articles regarding engine maintenance,
 diagnostic
test
procedures, repair articles, etc. on the C140. It's a great start for
someone who is new to the C140, but it's nowhere close to being a
sufficient
replacement for WIS. He's even got the DTC codes you seek, in
addition to instructions on how to make your own scanner.

Hope this helps and please feel free to ask any other questions you
 may have.

I would take exception to that. Any 1996 and later car sold in the US

Re: [MBZ] For Sale: 1995 S500 Coupe

2013-01-01 Thread TE
Well given that my only advertisement has been on craigslist Raleigh and
Charlotte, I am probably missing a bunch of 'Mercedes folks' in GA, SC and
eastern NC who don't regularly check Raleigh or Charlotte. Looking back, I
should have put an ad on ATL and Upstate SC and Charleston too, but it's a
moot point now.

I will have to wait until I get back to China, redo the ads with my father's
cell phone number and tighten up the wording to thwart off any deadbeat
dregs of society, which unfortunately are all I have heard from so far. Hey,
at least the phone number listing that requires the secret decoder ring has
eliminated any telemarketers.

I really wanted to take care of the hassle of selling it for him while I was
home, because I know he's got a lot going on and I guess it's just me trying
to be a good son and take care of shit for my father. Is the car worth the
bluebook value of $4,950? Definitely. Is the car a good deal at $3,950 with
a salvage title and a bit of faded paint? Yes. Is the car an absolute steal
at $3,000? Absolutely. Unfortunately it's only 'Mercedes folks' who
understand these things though, as most dregs of society only care about
mileage and price. These dumbasses don't realize that just the Bosch Euro
Xenon headlights alone can fetch at least $1,200 on eBay, if not more.

Anyway, to answer your question the car does have a salvage title; however,
I have never heard of an insurance company not insuring a car just because
it has a salvage title. If so, it's probably a company not worth doing
business with anyway.

Does it have a salvage title? I ask because of the mention of a write off in

Well clearly if it's going to be a 35-45 mph parkway with lights here and
there there will be no significant impact on travel times. Sounds like a
ploy to create a new shopping center strip for the Kiawah/Seabrook crowd.
Though we are Seabrook folk, I would much rather stop at the Piggly Wiggly

shopping center with corporate chain places. Not to mention, flying down
River Rd at 80mph in the C140 will be impossible.

The plan is to build a parkway design (called Alternative G) for an
extension to 526 from the end at 17. Another 4-lane bridge would cross over
to Johns Island a bit north of the existing (new 4-lane) Stono bridge, run
sorta along where River Rd is now N/S of Maybank, then go back over the
Stono on another (new 4-lane) bridge a bit south of the existing (new
4-lane) Stono bridge, thence through James Island County Park and connect to
the James Island connector, which backs up every morning by having all the
inbound traffic back up at a single-lane and light. Oh, and it floods at
high tides and storms. Alt G would be an at-grade 35-45mph parkway with
lights here and there. It would destroy lots of marshland and Johns Island
to developers (guess who supports the road?). 16 lanes of bridges to/from
this island, almost as many as go into/from Manhattan. Think about that.
$558M or $675M. Minimal benefit on travel times. And SC is like the bottom
of the list in terms of education and health of its citizens. But Emperor
Joe needs his damn road to complete his destruction of the area.

My brother hated winter driving in Virginia because the other drivers

In the Cary, NC the people who get stuck in the winter weather are the
overconfident northerners. Three issues:
1) We have some serious hills. This especially bothers New York City/Jersey
expats for some reason.
2) When it snows, the ground is almost always above freezing, and we usually
have rain before snow. The base becomes ice as the temperature drops if the
water isn't moving; in newer cities with marginal drainage this means thick
ice in random places. When it starts cold and there is snow it is normal
(versus Pennsylvania at least) and relatively easy to navigate, but that is
very rare here in the center of the state.
3) A southern snow plow comes individually wrapped (I think you northerners
call it a shovel, but for some reason I never saw the point). Salt is
something that we use on our food, and anyway our trucks are built to not
drop stuff everywhere. Thus, real southerners utilize technology to do
their work from home, while their Boston-hailing bosses wait for the tow
truck in the cold. (BTDT...)

In the last real snow storm there were many stories of folks getting half
way up a hill and then sliding back into a pile of cars and SUVs. No doubt
there are some good YouTubes of it. Cary being Cary remember that half the
people are from north of the Mason-Dixon and the other half are from India.

Moral of the story, physics don' care who you is.

Re: [MBZ] Color matched spray bombs

2012-08-03 Thread TE
Curt,

Can't remember where you are located, but in Gastonia, NC there is a place
called Franco Carolina Automotive Paint who makes spray bombs. Give them the
make and OEM color name/code and they will make as many spray bombs as you
want (~$15 each IIRC). Also, they can create blends to match any color
sample you bring in.

I heard about them through my buddy who works at Sherwin Williams Automotive
Finishes in Charlotte, NC. They use Sherwin Williams Automotive paint, which
in my opinion is great stuff. Be sure to get the primer and clear coat from
them as well, as the type of primer and clear used must be compatible with
the paint in the spray bomb.

I called up there and ordered 2 spray bombs of 917 Aquablau for my 75 240D a
while back, and bought the primer and clear as well. Project came out
perfect!

it, they will make the paint match the current faded color. Of course, if
you do that, then over time it may fade too much but for now, it will be
right.

I would have to advise against it. We have an induction stovetop here in our
flat in China and it leaves a lot to be desired. Not to mention, you will
probably discover that half of your pots and pans won't work, even the ones

Newegg has an induction cooker for $50, a single burner that sits on the

Subject: [MBZ] Modern cars in the rain

About an hour ago we were traveling south on the Merit Parkway. It was
heavily raining. I had the wipers set to the first automatic setting which
varied the speed according to the intensity of rain and vehicle speed. The
intelligent adaptive headlights were on, as well as the rear fog light. A
warning appeared on the instrument cluster that Pre-safe, Distronic, and
Active blind spot assist were temporarily unavailable. I suspect it was
from the heavy rain. The sat nav changed my route and suggested a cut over
to I-95 to avoid some traffic. I was skeptical, but as we approached the
exit, traffic slowed to a near stand still. I exited and followed the
guidance to I-95. Rain had let up and the instrument cluster told me my
radar assisted functions were available again. Approaching I-95, we stopped
at an intersection. There was a large amount of standing water and several
disabled cars. I reached over and pressed the button to raise the ride
height of the car. I had a vision of a 5 figure engine replacement, but I
cut the corner and we made it through, and finally onto the highway.
It started raining heavy again. I stayed in the middle lane and kept a up
a moderate pace. I checked my mirrors... coming up on my left, yellow
headlights at all, was a Citroen 2CV. He passed me going about 10mph
faster. And suddenly... I wished I was behind the wheel of a thirty year
old 240D.

There seems to be a pretty decent contingent of offerings below $200 as long
as I don't need 7.1 and things like iPod or Bluetooth options. Thanks for
the info, I'll check it out.

I have been looking at some of the manufacturer's refurb stores, and there
are some possibilities there, along with places like Crutchfield. I was
never terribly enamored of Crutchfield until a few years ago when I bought a
head unit for my youngest son's car. They seem to finally have their act
together with reasonable pricing and very good support. Used to be they
were ridiculously expensive, but I suspect having to compete with the big

Bought a rear projection TV from them some years back. Poor design that
experienced failures on an annual basis. Got tired of it being fixed after
the fourth year (luckily I had a five year warranty) and took them to small
claims to recover costs.

They wanted to give me another one (same model) but I refused. I had copies
of service bulletins documenting the problem, and a list of kludges they
suggested to cure it.

Believe it or not, they had a local attorney appear at the hearing. He was
totally clueless and unprepared. I wasn't. I got my money back for the TV
and the warranty.

That was the last Sony product I will ever own.

The mechanics of doing it are well within my abilities. The layout of the

Re: [MBZ] Whaddya know . . . a compu savvy person on the list

2012-05-28 Thread TE
You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave... not because
of a computer problem anyway! Glad to have your back!

In a nutshell:

The problem is related to the way Hotmail displays emails in its web
interface. When you access Hotmail via any web browser, Hotmail's interface
uses this feature called 'Active View' that is supposed to make emails
easier to navigate and look more like webpages (e.g. showing attachments as
embedded content, etc.). You can disable the way 'Active View' handles
certain emails and attachments, but you cannot disable it completely.

For whatever reason, this 'Active View' feature wreaks havoc on MIME
multipart messages; which, as it turns out, is the default message type for
digest subscribers. The digest emails show up jumbled and out of order,
basically rendering digest mode intolerable.

Fortunately, our list allows members to receive digests in one of two forms:
MIME or Plain Text. By default, the option selected is MIME, so all we did
was switch the delivery preference to Plain Text. Now the digests are
showing up correctly.

Bottom line... If you use Hotmail as your email provider and wish to receive
the Mercedes list in digest mode:

1) Use a POP3 email client (e.g. Outlook, etc.) which does not require use
of the web interface.

OR

2) Access your email via a web browser and change your mailing list delivery
preference from MIME to Plain Text (accessible by logging into the Mercedes
mailing list website with your email address and password).

Re: [MBZ] UPS Diesel or gas?

2012-04-24 Thread TE
LNG has always been a part of the UPS fleet, though in limited quantities
and only in select areas (e.g. the Pleasantdale GA hub). Typically, the size
of the package car (correct UPS term) dictates whether or not the engine is
diesel or gas. The larger package cars (P1000, P1200) always have diesel
engines, whereas the smaller package cars (P500, P570) have gas engines.

I haven't seen a feeder truck with LNG until that picture. Usually we would
try to incorporate those technologies into vehicles that are more customer
facing, so to speak.

Re: [MBZ] UPS Diesel or gas?

2012-04-24 Thread TE
UPS destroys their package cars when they are retired from service. First,
the package car is stripped of its badging, decals, etc. Next it is painted
white, crushed to pieces and photographed.

There are still a lot of vehicles in service from the mid 90's and even many
of the new package cars still come equipped with the Spicer 5 speed. The new
automatic transmissions are prevalent on the smaller size package cars (e.g.
P500, P570), but the reason behind them is not to lure drivers who cannot
operate a manual transmission. Every service provider who goes through
driver training at UPS is trained on a specially designed 'training' package
car, equipped with a manual transmission.

2012-04-11 Thread TE
Yea I didn't get rid of it, I brought it back to my parents' house and set
it up as a secondary WAP to improve coverage on the other side of the house.
It still worked fine, but I needed something a little more up to date for my
setup. Currently, I have two routers: 1 E2000 running dd-WRT with OpenVPN
configured for an always connected VPN connection to the states. The EA4500
is for a direct connection to the Chinese internet for those devices I do
not need to be tunneled through the VPN.

I think they will work forever, it was a good product, but it really suffers
when there is a lot of data moving through it.

Re: [MBZ] SDL won't start

2012-01-30 Thread TE
Not sure if this is relevant, but I've had a similar problem on a W124 where
the there is a problem with the shifter linkage on the side of the
transmission. If the switch that this linkage is connected to (looks like a
rectangular box with a cable attached) doesn't sense that the car is in
either park or neutral, nothing happens when you turn the key. No solenoid
click, no starter, no slight dimming of dash/interior lights, no nothing.
I'm not sure if this is really considered a neutral safety switch, but it
has a sort of immobilizer effect on starting.

I was stranded at work for a while, until I realized that it might be that
dog carcass that I had no choice but to roll over on the way to work that
morning. Apparently, when it brushed the underside of the car, it did
something to the linkage/switch that didn't allow it to reset into the
park position, although the shift lever was in P. A quick giggle of the
switch lever/linkage and I was on my way.

Re: [MBZ] Water Heater

2012-01-05 Thread TE
To Dan's point, the size (not capacity) water heater you buy is dictated by
where you need to install it; however, you may find that the taller water
heaters are cheaper. I remember when my house in Charlotte needed a new
water heater in the crawlspace, a 50 gal lowboy was considerably more than
a normal sized 50 gal water heater.

Jerry,

While it sounds like you are looking at this from a purely fiscal point of
view, have you considered one of the hybrid hot water heaters? They are
considerably more than a standard water heater, but have considerably lower
operating cost, and in some cases, qualify for a tax rebate due to their
energy savings.

As for a standard tank style heater, the size is a matter of fit, and not
relative to the efficiency. They make them narrow and tall as well as short
and squat, since space sometimes dictates what can be used.

As for the warranty, you'll have to do the math. If you get a 12 year
warranty on a water heater that is less than twice the cost of the 6 year
warranty, you should be ahead of the game as long as they provide a complete
replacement.

My last house had an 80 gallon heater (4500 square feet, 4.5 baths) and I
was able to find a cosmetically damaged heater at Lowe's for about 30% off,
which was a considerable savings for a heater of this size.

Dan

I'm guessing this topic has been discussed on this forum.
Seeing a moist area beneath the 20+ year old gas hot water heater, I know
that it is time for replacement real soon. Home Depot sells a 50 gallon GE
with a 6 year warranty for $430. Way up from when I last looked at water
heaters. Or for $700, a lifetime warranty on the tank. A 40 gallon goes for
$338, and for the lifetime tank, $460.
Home Depot Supply (warehouse) sells the Rheem 50 gallon for $465 and the
40 gallon for $369. Having had the 50 gallon heater here at home and in a
rental, I see no advantage of a 50 gallon for four person, so I pllan to buy
the 40 gallon this time.

But what brand? And is the lifetime warranty worth $200 more? This will go
in the garage with easy access, so replacing it would not be a big deal. On
the other hand, why buy a heater (or roof) that you know will have to be
replaced in your lifetime? Does it matter if the heater is the tall type?
Any size will fit where I am putting it. I would even consider a
cosmetically damaged one if the price was right.
I'd be interested in your comments and collective wisdom.
Oh, and I don't think I'm interested in a tankless. Too new fangled for
me.

I am looking at a Linksys (Cisco) 4200 and a comparable Asus model.  Given

$500 or less to fix boo boo! lol

If the car had collision insurance on it, I'm sure the adjuster would write
the car off if you made a claim to have it repaired, as even a so so repair
would probably exceed the value of the car. Bodywork, paint, light
assemble, rear bumper$500, dream on!

Is it maybe lubrication to the pump? I seem to recall that the 240 engine
has a means of adding oil to the
injection pump but the 300 engine does not.

Hi Kaleb,

On my 1975 W115 300D, there is a small (black stiff plastic, maybe 1/4
diameter) line running from the rear side
of the vacuum pump to the side of the Injection Pump, attached with banjo
bolts at either end. It is about a foot
long. Now that I think about it, I am not sure of its intended function
(vacuum line? oil lubrication
line?)... but what I DO know, after 35 years, is that there is a river of
oil running through it, apparently. :)
I have no automatic vacuum shut-off as anyone at the ChowdahQ can vouch
for I open the hood and manually
shut it down. Perhaps there is a connection here. :)

Re: [MBZ] Wheel color

2010-08-17 Thread TE
Not at all and it's a great suggestion. I purchased my AMG Monoblock II's
off of eBay, where they had minor cosmetic damage (chipped paint, very light
curb rash, etc.) I took them to Prince Wheel Services in Monroe, NC, where
they did a fantastic job on powder coating them.

Justin Prince, the proprietor, has several color chips that we matched
perfectly (incandescent light color, fluorescent light color, metallic flake
amount, etc.) to the original astral silver color of the new center caps I
bought for the wheels at the dealership.

For $130 per wheel, they measured the run out, roundness, etc. of each wheel
to make sure they were perfect. After stripping the original paint and
lightly machining the aluminum lip, the wheels were powder coated (minus the
lip) and then given a final clear powder coat of the entire wheel. The
result was a perfect, brand new set of AMG wheels, inside and out.

Don't look for a super easy job in cleaning though, as brake dust won't
simply hose off of anything. However, minimal effort with a wet sponge
brings them back to new again.

Trust me, from a guy who tried refinishing a set of Bundts, the $130 per
wheel is cheaper than the time and materials you will spend doing it
yourself.

What about powder coating? There are a couple of outfits near me that
advertise that they will powder coat a set of wheels for $200,
including a solvent dip and bead-blast beforehand (and they have
plenty of shades of gray available). Seems like it'd be worth it to
avoid spending hours scrubbing away brake dust and hand-sanding all
the little holes in a bundt or 15-hole pancake wheel. Anyone know any
reason why powder coating would be a bad idea?

Actually it's doing more than that. Amtrak had one on the northeast corridor
between Baltimore and dc.

For prep work they drop sections of ribbon rail on each side of the old
track, then weld the sections into a continuous piece.

The machine comes by and unclips the old rails from the old sleepers. It
then spreads the old rails out while lifting them. Where the spread is wide
enough, it pulls up the old sleeper and pulls the ballast, drops in a new
sleeper. It then pulls in the new rails, bringing them under the old rails,
and then clips the rails into the sleepers.

The process is continuous.

Some of these track renewal trains can even clean the old ballast!

Neat stuff!

[MBZ] FOR SALE: 1995 S500 Coupe

2010-02-17 Thread TE

On October 13, 2009, the car was involved in a low speed accident in a
parking lot. The Toyota Highlander, driven by a woman on a cell phone,
struck the front driver's side of the car at roughly 10 MPH. Fortunately,
all of the resulting damage was localized to the section before the front
tire on the driver's side. The S500 sustained minimal damage, with no damage
to the inside of the engine compartment, hood or uni-body. Damaged parts
included the driver's side headlight, front bumper, and front driver's side
fender. With all of the parts assessed at dealer prices and labor rates
estimated at top dollar from Charlotte Paint and Body (referral from
Hendrick Mercedes), the car was deemed a loss by the insurance company. The
car was fixed immediately following the accident with an OEM fender and
bumper and has performed flawlessly ever since.

As far as maintenance is concerned, every oil change has been done in 3000
mile intervals and only Mobil 1 0W-40 has been used. The coolant, air
filter, charcoal filter, pollen filter, transmission filter, fuel filter,
brake fluid, power steering fluid and power steering filter have all been
changed at regular intervals using only genuine Mercedes-Benz products and
lubricants from the dealership.

The following maintenance tasks have been performed recently: fuel filter
change, transmission filter change and fill, power steering filter change
and fill (with Mobil 1 ATF), brake system flush, new pollen filter, new
charcoal filter, coolant flush and fill.

As far as the mechanical qualities of the car, the engine is a solid
performing M119 motor with no problems at all. The ETA (Electronic Throttle
Actuator) has recently been replaced due to age; a common high ticket item
on W140/C140 vehicles. The engine uses no oil, nor does it leak a drop.

The transmission is in great shape and shifts flawlessly. The transmission
does not leak any fluid and the fluid and filter have been changed at
regular intervals, using only Mobil 1 ATF. The kick down switch function
works perfect as well. The shifter linkage bushings were replaced when I
first purchased the car to provide a firm shift of the gear selector lever.

The suspension of the car is perfect condition. The ball joints, tie rod
ends and lower control arm bushings were replaced in July of 2009. The self
leveling rear suspension is in perfect condition as well, with the filter
and fluid changed at regular intervals. The air cells and other components
are in perfect working order.

Aesthetically, the car is in great shape. Having spent its life south of the
Mason-Dixon Line, the car has no rust whatsoever. The paint is original and
in great shape for its age, as I routinely wash and wax it with the Mother's
brand three step waxing system. This treatment is accompanied by an
occasional clay bar application, keeping the paint in impeccable shape. The
interior is in overall great shape, with no cracks in the leather seats or
armrest. All leather surfaces in the car are soft and pliable due to routine
cleaning and conditioning using Lexol brand products. All vinyl surfaces in
the car are cared for with Lexol's Vinylex. The dash has no cracks in it
whatsoever; likewise for the Burl Walnut wood trim, all of which is in
perfect condition.

Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) inside and out of the car is functioning

It's in my driveway, feel free to stop by with your mechanic and take a
look. If you call before you come I'll make sure the battery is charged.
Durham NC 27705.

:)

Seriously: dark brown in and out, the one that lost oil pressure in the
interstate a few months ago (maybe almost a year now?), that story should
be in archives (as is my address). US, auto, NA of course. Believe it is
the original 616 engine, as it has a separately-oiled injection pump
without altitude compensation. No bottom rust, a few poorly-treated spots
of bird droppings on the roof and hood (expecting to use the random orbital
and cover those with at least rattlecan before it's really up, so it has an
honest chance). Good interior, have to look and make sure it isn't leaking
though. Heater blower did -not- work, and had been replaced at least once
before (hole around speaker). Engine kind of weakly turns on the starter
but with no oil pressure, and water system appears to be slowly leaking
down since it has been parked. Had the pencil glow plugs when I got it,
unknown mileage (200k though I'd bet).

I think I'm the third owner, and that #1 dumped it two years back because
the heater fan quit, based on my discussion with the prior-to-me owner. AC
worked well, though I think I had to have it in defrost mode - it's been a
while, but I remember suspecting the freon tube was either bad or that I'd
put it back in the wrong place when I did the cooling blower. Factory
Becker that I might keep, even though it needs some electrical work. No
maintenance records, but I have the original sales literature, and the
print FSMs.

The thing I loved about it was that the transmission was perfect - super
smooth, and wouldn't even hint at going backward in gear. Ran well too,
once it got going, and did fine going up and down the weak hills around
here. It has been parked since it failed, I haven't even taken off the oil
pan or run a compression test - the 300D has taken all my auto service time
(and money!).

I have until wife's patience runs out for the driveway to get cleared, so
probably until March or April to make it gone on my terms before the junk
men get it. If that's it then I'll take the good bits (Becker, ACCI,
pencil glow plugs, and the oddly-valuable radiator) off, but hopefully
someone will have some time and space to put it back right - if I can keep
the 300D from sinking all my time, and no one else has bitten by then,
maybe I'll hide it in a storage unit near the office and work on it at
lunchtimes.

It is difficult here as there are lots of 123s with fairly low miles
getting dumped, and it's hard to justify a new or even used engine when you
can get an entire mostly-rust-free 123 300D/DT (and even a few TDs and
126s) with about 200Kmi for $500-$1500 basically once a week during spring
and summer, and the occasional dirt-cheap semi-functioning 107. I do like
the 115 style but that only is worth so much effort.

I paid too much for it, but if nothing else it got me out of Volvos and
into diesels so it was probably a reasonable ROI. I still kind of want to
keep it, since I like its look and I know everything that's wrong on it,
but I'm not giving it a good home, and it just seems sad to let it
deteriorate.

Letting go is hard to do...

Re: [MBZ] Lights - Asian or otherwise

2009-12-20 Thread TE
I'm pretty sure those Headlight Restoration signs you see nailed to
telephone poles in big cities refer to the restoration, or polishing of
faded polycarbonate or glass headlight lenses that have yellowed and clouded
over the years.

I'd be interested in seeing how much a plating kit would cost, and how the
headlights would turn out.

You may be able to use a silver plate even though that is not
original. There is a way to do the prep work, then drop the
reflectors in a bath of electrolyte, Pinch and old quarter or two in
a jumper cable dangled in the electrolyte, hook the cathode and anode
cables to some number of old car batteries and do it yourself. The
tricks are getting the prep right, getting the right electrolyte,
getting the right voltage, using the right alloy of silver and
getting the right length of time.

I am sure there are people in mexico and other countries that do that
pretty low tech. I see signs nailed to poles for re-plating
headlights in big cities. I don't think those guys are high tech.

When I was in Uganda, one of the guys I met made mirrors in his spare
time. Just give him some glass, and some silver, and he would make
you a mirror. He had no sophisticated tools. I suspect most of his
tools and consumables came out of a junkyard.

There were prior threads about plating kits, for the faint of heart.

I have a lot of interest in this thread as I have a pair of W114/W115
euro's
that have corroded main and fog reflectors. Silver plating was only done on
old school headlights to my knowledge. I think from the 60's on, most
headlight reflectors were coated by using ion vapor deposited aluminum.

I've already talked to my guy at Sherwin Williams Automotive Finishes here
in Charlotte (a fellow Mercedes enthusiast) and he doesn't recommend
painting them with a chrome paint like DupliColor, etc. Sherwin Williams
doesn't even have a paint that is suitable for this application.

I then talked to my powder coating guy at Prince Wheel Services in Monroe,
and he says that although there are some reflective finishes available in
powder coat, that too will not stand up to the heat.

Needless to say, I need to find a place, preferably in NC that can do ion
vapor deposited aluminum. Anyone have a source?

Re: [MBZ] More 140 pleasure

2009-12-14 Thread TE
You guys...

As always, the issue of W140/C140 ownership and maintenance is always blown
way out of proportion, based on someone's bad experience or list hearsay.
I'd be interested to see how many of the list members who wax poetic on the
140 actually own, or have owned one.

The C140, in my opinion, is the best late model Mercedes to date. That's
coming from a man who has owned many a W115 (1), W123 (3), W124 (2), W126
(2), W202 (1) and W210 (1). After driving any of them, any other Mercedes,
or any other manufacturer's car for that matter, I always get back in my
S500 coupe and think to myself Damn, even after 15 years, it's still the
best car I've ever driven.

That's not to discredit the difficulty or time involved in an evaporator
job, etc. However, I think the main problem is that the average DIY'er
assumes that because the car is labeled as over-engineered, it must be
expensive to maintain or difficult to work on. Quite the contrary, I have no
problem handling a majority of maintenance/repair issues with a little help
from WIS and a wholesale discount at the dealership.

Based on my experience with 140 models, I can say that the weak front
suspension claim is completely unfounded. Maybe a neglected 140 can have a
weak front suspension, but one that is properly maintained is trouble free,
at least in my experience.

Door closers? That's neither expensive or difficult to fix. Pretty simple to
fix actually, provided one has information regarding the Closing Assist pump
and its components. I could see the PSE pump and its components (door locks,
trunk lock, gas flap lock, rear reverse markers, retracting trunk handle,
lumbar support) being more of an issue, but that is also easily fixable,
again provided one knows what they are doing.

Now of course, I do admit that a car like a W115 diesel or W123 diesel can
be maintained with a few rags, wrenches and basic electrical wiring tools.
Hell, they are simple. But for the thrifty DIY'er with a little patience,
the 140, whether coupe or sedan, is a wonderful car to own and maintain.

yeah, I think the evaporator is the very first component to go on the car,
after the paint primer. Replacement requires dismantling back to that
stage. I'm not sure, but I think according to the book, the paint may have
to come off the car too during evaporator replacement. ;-)

Oh well, sure but you take for granted everyone knows about that one since
there have been hundreds of posts on the various MB lists over the years.

I've seen a few 140s at the dealer in for an evap change and they look
like
the aftermath of a Bagdad car bombing.

The 140 project was such a disaster that the head man was banished to

Re: [MBZ] beer question -- yuengling

The reason why you see it everywhere you go lately is because the state of
Georgia just started getting the stuff about 6 months ago, so it's probably
all the rave down there. I know this because a college buddy of mine now
lives in Atlanta and he called me the day he was able to buy a 12 pack of it

Kinda like how NC never had Sweetwater 420 until I tasted some at the

new (gray) female plastic trim strip inserts have a somewhat larger spacing
where the insert grabs the fender wall than the original (red/orange)
female plastic trim strip inserts thus allowing the trim strip to pull the
female plastic trim strip insert out from the fender wall slightly (pix
attached). Forgive the lousy pix, as I got too close but I believe one can
get the idea from the pix.

Re: [MBZ] W115 Trim

2009-11-15 Thread TE
Guys,

Thanks for the advice. I took most of the trim off the 240D last night,
including the rocker panel trim, side trim on the front fender, doors and
rear quarter panel. The 'wind diverters' on the side of the windshield came
off also, in addition to the trim that covers the 'channel' on both sides of
the roof.

With all of that trim off the car, in addition to the grille, lights,
bumpers, front air dam, etc., the only thing I'm left with is the rear trim
just under the trunk lid and the trim for the front and rear windshields.

Looking at the gaskets, I'd imagine they are original as it seems the AZ sun
fully baked them years ago. From the responses I got, it seems that neither
the front or rear gasket should be glued in. Is this correct? So when I
install the new gaskets both front and back, I shouldn't glue them in?

Also, anybody have any tips for removing the trim under the trunk lid? It
looks as if the trunk lock assembly has to be removed, but I'm not sure. Any
advice?

Regards,
TE

I think there is a screw on the end of those long side pieces. Take a look
-- will be a single screw where it is covered by another body panel when the
door or trunk is closed. Might be one on both ends. The rest of the piece
is held on by plastic pins stuck through littlre red bushings. Replace all
of those, by the way.

A thin putty knife works well to remove the trim, or a thin plastic blade.
Do not use anything sharp, you will cut the rubber gasket underneath, and
they are hard to get now.

Gaskets for front and rear windows are removed as follows:

Pull trim off botton edge (one screw on each end, pull off barbed clips with
hooked puller. The trim fits into the gasket.

Disconnect rear window heater wires in the trunk.

Once the trim is off, from the inside, pry down and out at the upper corners
of the lip on each side. Gasket will pop to the oustide, releasing
window. On the rear, make SURE the wires come out of the holes in the rear

Be prepared to fix the flange, it's likely rusty with all the paint rubbed

Make sure the flange is perfectly clean and SMOOTH before installing new

the area the gasket seats. Install gasket on window, then insert trim into
gasket (the part that goes around except at the base). Wrap a 1/8 cord
around the slot that goes over the flange on the body, starting and ending
in the center of the bottom edge. Lift window into place, setting the lower
edge over the flange as much as possible. Have a helper press window firmly
against the flange, properly centered (this is the gard part!) and use the
cord to flip the lip over the flange. Make sure the wires are in place for
the rear one. Pull the cord out slowly and carefully. Watch the top
corners, as this is where you usually have problems. Silicone spray lube
helps quite a bit, too. With luck it will pop right in on the first wrap,
but if not you have the second. A blunt, hooked screwdriver is also useful
to help at the top corner.

Trunk trim came off easy today. There is a nut (8mm) that has to be taken
off of the end of each trim piece (near the corners). Next, in order to get
the short piece of chrome that covers the lock area off, take off the latch
plate inside the trunk (3 phillips head screws). Then remove the lock
assembly by removing the two nuts (8mm) now accessible through the latch
opening. Once this is done, the chrome plate will come off by removing from
the outside. You can remove the lock assembly from the linkage if you wish,
but it is not necessary for removal of the trim.

Now with the short chrome piece off and the nuts removed on the corners, the
rest of the trim pops out of the clips, similar to that on the rest of the
side trim. There should be 4 clips on each piece.

Yea it will probably be as much of a b*tch to get back on as it was to get

I got the horizontal pieces off with little difficulty and much effort. The
back pieces I still cannot remove, but I still want to take them off. Hell,
I've gotten this far in creating a blank canvas to paint, might as well
finish the job.

I'm glad I took them off though, because I found a penny sized paint bubble,
half of which was under the lip of the trim on the passenger side. I'm
guessing when I press them back on I will just use a table saw to cut a slit
in a piece of wood that will cradle the top of the trim when I'm hammering
the sh*t out of it.

rear bumpers from the 75 240D. The ugly 'tack on' bumpers I have the 2
typical struts with 4 bolts in a square pattern. I bought a set of early

streamlined look, not to mention the extra 8 inches gained will allow me to
tap dance around the car better when it's in the garage.

The early W115 bumpers I have though only have 2 holes in the mounting
brackets, not even close to what the car has available to mount up to. Any
ideas?

Re: [MBZ] W115 Trim

2009-11-15 Thread TE
My guess is the W114/115 trim is a little different, as it just fits onto the
rib that runs the length of the body in an inverted U fashion. The actual
channel that carries the water is just a painted surface with no trim covering
it. Nonetheless, it was still a pain to get off, as it is pressed onto that
rib pretty well. I actually put the trim back into place after taking it off
to make sure it would go back on OK. It's almost as if I can just hit the top
of the trim with a rubber mallet to get it to snap back onto the rib.

The black portion is a different story however, as it had to be bent a little
out of shape to get off in the first place. If it doesn't stay, maybe so
adhesive will do the trick. I still can't get the wide back pieces of trim off
though (the ones that cover the ventilation holes in the body).

If it is similar to the 123 rain gutter trim, it has to be driven back on to
the weldment using a piece of hardwood with a notch cut in it. It does not go
over the trim in an inverted U fashion, just butts up against the inside
(body side) and applies force to the shoulder of the trim.
It's a b*tch to do, especially when you're beating on it like a mother and
trying not to miss or slip and trash your newly painted car. Don't ask me how
I know this.
As for the black portion, it has a U shaped extrusion running through it,
which is molded to the shape of the rain channel. if you bend or curve it al
all and change the shape, it won't want to stay on the aluminum trim after you
put everything together.
Whatever you do, take the four pieces of trim and lay them flat somewhere out
of the way where they won't be disturbed until you're ready to install them.

US: Ford confirms Geely as preferred bidder for Volvo Cars

 28 October 2009 | Source: just-auto.com editorial team

Ford announced today that a consortium led by Zhejiang Geely Group Holding
Co. Ltd. is its preferred bidder in the ongoing discussions concerning the
possible sale of Volvo Car Corporation.
Ford said that while it will be engaging in more detailed and focused
negotiations with Geely, no final decisions have been made.
Ford's objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement
that is in the best interests of all the parties, said Lewis Booth, Ford
Motor Company executive vice president and chief financial officer.
Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources,
including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the
business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to
focus
on and implement our core 'One Ford' strategy.
Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of
Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and
the independence of the Swedish brand.  But there is much work that needs
to be completed in the more substantive discussions that are agreed to take
place.  We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussions.
While Ford would continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas after a
possible sale, Ford said it does not intend to retain a shareholding in
Volvo.
John Fleming, chairman of Ford of Europe and Volvo Cars, said: Ford fully
understands the iconic Swedish nature of the Volvo brand and the
responsibility we have as Volvo's custodian to its employees, local
communities and
other key stakeholders.
Any sale also would need to take into account the significant connections
between Ford and Volvo in terms of continuing component supply, engineering
and manufacturing.
Ford and Volvo will maintain appropriate communications with key
stakeholders, such as Volvo's employees, unions and the Swedish government,
during
the ongoing process.
Volvo's management team welcomes today's announcement as a positive step
forward, Volvo CEO Stephen Odell said.
At Volvo, we are continuing to keep our attention firmly fixed on
engineering and building great Volvo cars, to reduce our cost base and to
return
the business to sustainable profitability at the earliest possible
opportunity.

Speaking exclusively to just-auto last week, Ford CEO Alan Mulally
stressed the importance of the transition in Ford's premium brand
divestments.
Clearly the transition will be an important part of the [Volvo] sale,
because we have a lot of pieces of the product in the production system that

are integrated - just like Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover, the
transition
is important, he said.
We have done that very well with the brands that we have divested and we
are committed to the success of Volvo long-term.

Sure! It's a commonly available FGS module that several of the 500E
owner crowd are using.

It works - solid product. Substitute for the no longer available
Bergwerks FGS.

I've replaced the fan on a W115 a little over 20 years ago. I've also
removed dashs from W123s ans W201s.

The W115 was by far the worst.

I even tried to drive the W115 without the dash and I forgot about
 the oil
pressure sensor line and felt the hot oil on my leg.

I tried to put my thumb over the line and drive back to my parking
 spot but
the pressure was too great and oil too hot.

Removing the dash on a W123 is child's play. I'm told, however, that
removing the dash on a 114/115 is the extreme opposite and takes
 about a
day. That's why the death of the fan motor has often meant the death
 of the
car; the process of getting to the fan is a little like unearthing
 the evap
 unit on a W140.

i'd guess 98 or 99, but someone like
little tommy would remember such a
 thing.

to sum it up briefly as i understand it:  in the
 beginning, there was dave
realtime and esa ahola.  figure about 95ish.  a
 dominant figure on the list
was cookies and he really pissed off a ton of people
 everyday.  ritter and
easley then started their own list to be kinder and
 gentler and cookies
free, maybe about 96 or 97.  one stuart steele was
 doing the listmom thing
for ritter/easley and he and ritter undertook basically
 what amounted to
purges of all dissidents.  the mbz.org lists began as
 a reaction to those
purges, beginning with banned as a safe haven for
 mercedesphiles who had
been purged from ritter/easley.  as ritter/easley
 purported to be kinder and
gentler, banned went out of its way to be exactly the
 opposite so while it
did contain tech information, it was not a fit forum for
 many who wished to
participate in an alternative tech list.  so richard
 sexton and i decided
that if dr booth as willing to participate in the proposed
 diesel list, we'd
run out a bunch of more democratic and open lists via
 mbz.org

then richard and mbz.org had one final nuclear meltdown and
 lists
disappeared, but kaleb took the initiative and stepped up
 to keep them alive
(originally while richard brought the lists back up, but
 now permanently)
and that is where we are today.

The short version is this. I asked him to come to the IowaQ as the guest of

never again be able to travel anywhere due to the cancer, but said how much

The bolt pattern is still 5X112mm; however, the size of the lug bolt is
larger diameter on the W140. The W123, W124, W126 and W210 all share the
same bolt size.

In addition, the offset is something to worry about too, as John said.

Nope. Offset is something like 55 vs 25 and I understand the bolt pattern or
something is different.

When my previous statement referred specifically to bolt diameter, I figured
it was inferred that size in my subsequent statement referred to bolt
diameter as well. Thanks for the clarification.

I got told that the bolts on the 126 SEL wheels (the flat slotted ones)
needed to be longer than the bundt bolts on the SD, and ordered some.
You might want to check on which bolts go with which wheels, even for
the same chassis. Same diameter but different length, different size
then.

The bolt pattern is still 5X112mm; however, the size of the lug bolt is
larger diameter on the W140. The W123, W124, W126 and W210 all share the
 same bolt size.

In addition, the offset is something to worry about too, as John said.

Probably because short of an act of God, potential buyers are not allowed to
enter Kiawah Island. Same thing with my girlfriends place across the way on
Seabrook Island. No pass? No entry.

Subject: [MBZ] 1987 Mercedes 560SL Restored - $16000

I saw this car a coupla weeks ago at the car show, it was pretty nice,
but not $16k worth. Saw a woman at the grocery store the other day with
a car very similar, her husband bought if for her new for her
anniversary 20some years ago, it was in mint condition, she wouldn't
sell it but probably would go for less if it was for sale given prices
these days. But it wasn't Ivana's...

This guy has been trying to sell this thing for months, no takers.

Subject: [MBZ] 4-speed W116 project still available

The seller of the Euro 280S that I posted about a couple of weeks ago
(stick shift, carbed M110, manual climate control, etc.), is getting
desperate and is now offering it to me for $800. I hate to see the
thing go to the scrap metal vultures, or even to the U-Pull-It where
it will very likely be trashed unless the right people see it first
and carefully remove the Euro goodies (lights, bumpers, seat heaters,
two-tone horn switch, etc.). But I just don't have the room or the
time for yet another project. Any takers?

I am half-seriously thinking about buying it and fixing the rusty
fenders and rocker panels with some quick and dirty welding (I live in
tractor country, lots of people around here are eager to do small
welding jobs for cash). Then I could either swap in a 617 engine---it
bolts right up to the M110's engine mounts, flywheel, etc.,
right?---or maybe the M103 and A/T as a unit from my POS 300E (leaving
the 4-speed, clutch, etc. from the W116 to resell to someone
interested in converting their 300SD to manual). Somebody stop me.
