[MBZ] Clock Help

2005-11-28 Thread Vernon Ritchey
The clock in my 82 300SD finally quit. From initial inspection, it appears
that the resistor just abobe the crystal is cooked. Can anyone advise how to
proceed? Id the cooked resistor the problem or just a symptom of some other
problem? Does anyone have a schematic? Are these things DYI fixable or do I
need to send it somewhere? Any help appreciated.

Well, the odometer in the 300SDL has quit. I had a 560SEL that did the
same
thing. Both stopped right around 200K miles. Is this a common problem,
and

any info on what to look for and how to repair it? If not, I guess I'm in
the market for a new instrument cluster. There's one on ebay for a 300E
that looks similar, minus the outside temp gauge. Wonder if that would be
a

drop-in replacement? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

In my recent experience, the answer is until (1) fuel is gone, or (2) it

Delvac 1 is preferable to the others if you can find it, at least for
diesels. I use Mobile 1 15W50 for summer use, 5W50 most of the time
for winter, I have been doing about four oil changes a year lately with
the milage I'm accumulating. 6000 mile intervals work fine with a
filter each change so far -- car runs like a top at 234,000 miles and
starts instantly, doesn't use more than a quart in 6000 miles.

Has anyone "studied" the workings of the steering column locking
mechanism?

I have replaced the lock cylinder but the steering column lock binds
when the wheel is in a certain position. Once you hear that sliding
shaft click into place you know it will be hard to release it.

Turning the steering wheel to the right releases it enough to allow the
key to turn the cylinger but sometimes it takes a heavy hand. Because of
a problem with her right hand my wife cannot manage to do this at times.

I have a junk lock and have taken it apart so that I can see how it works
and have concluded that there are several parts that could cause the
system to bind.

Is there any one part that usually causes this?

I'm wondering about cutting off the end of the sliding or taking it out.

I would rather fix it.

I would appreciate any ideas

[MBZ] Oil Leak Location Advice

On my '79 300 TD (617 non turbo) there is a constant oil film on the front of
the engine and also on the alternator. What is/are the likel;y causes, front

Also on this engine, it doesn't die if I pulg the crankcase vent, indicating a
significant amount of blow-by is escaping somewhere. Somewhere not obvious to
me. Could this also be the front main seal?

There is also an active MBCA group in that area that may have some ideas. Bill

Technical: Did the same key operate the doors and ignition before? If so and
it works everthing but the ignition, he may have a bad lock (odd coincidence)
or the steering wheel lock bar is sticking. Did he have any problems with a

[MBZ] Opinions on 1989 300TE

2005-08-21 Thread Vernon Ritchey
I am seeking recommendations on a possible purchase.

I have an opportunity to buy a 1989 300 TE. It has about 130K miles with about
25K on the engine since rebuild (new commercial short block and head rebuilt).
Many other critical parts are almost new. Initial inspection and dialog with
owner leads me to believe this car is in excellent condition. It is overpriced
according to NADA and Edmunds but I suspect the condition justifies the price.

I am familiar with 123 and 126 diesels but don't know much about 124s or
gassers. So I'm lookin for input on the desirability of this car.
Knowkedgable opinions on the 124 wagon and the 3L gasser motor would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks

I still don't think it is going to be "unsafe" to drive it without the
stabilizer bar. The description given of the control arms mounting to the
body and the stabilizer connecting between them is no different than the
majority of vehicles on the street. The stabilizer bar acts as a sort of
torsion bar to connect the two sides together and improve handling. It
efectively reduces the lean over factor but not much else. I would guess
that removing it might even improve the ride somewhat as then you truly
have

independent front suspension so one side should not affect the other. It
will affect handling but not to any extreme and ought not to be unsafe if
the rest of the vehicle is intact. I can't see the idea of overextending a
shock and ripping off a control arm. That is extreme. There is likely a
bump

stop of some sort in the suspension somewhere to avoid overextending the
shocks and if the body is bad enough that one fears the loss of a control
arm then it is time to put the vehicle out to pasture.

Lots of older vehicles didn't have stabilizer bars. Offroaders routinely
disconnect them in order to keep their tires in contact with the terrain
in

rough country.

There is something you don't know about. The stabilizer holds the upper

It doesn't hold them in place, it links them together in an attempt to
improve
handling characteristics and reduce body roll in turns. The UCAs are
mounted to
and pivot at the body on one end, while the other end is connected to the
steering knuckle, the bottom of which is mounted to the lower control arm
which
is held in place by the spring (whose other end is mounted to the chassis,
and
whose motions are damped by the shock absorber). The LCA is stabilized at
the
rear by the caster joint.

While short-term I think the car would be drivable, long-term I think it
would
wear the suspension components quickly as they were forced to move more
than

they should. Worst-case, you over-extend a shock on one side, and ram the
UCA
of the other side through the inner fender (or rip the UCA from it's
mounting
point altogether).

So, not safe, but certainly doable. I certainly wouldn't do it unless it
was
the only means to get myself and the car home, where the car would then be
parked until I either parted the car or repaired it - with a preference
towards
the former.

Re: [MBZ] Dial Indicator

2005-07-23 Thread Vernon Ritchey
I have used the dial indicator several times to set the front bearings on my
123 and 126. In my experience, you can feel the motion if the bearings are
too lose when you push/pull on the wheel hub/disk. You don't actually feel
it move but you can feel it stop as the slack is taken out. I find the dial
indicator indicates the correct "play" just at the point I can no longer
detect motion when I "push/pull". So now if I'm in a rush or away from my
garage I adjust using that method ... tight enough when motion is not
detectable by feel.

Re: [MBZ] HELP 300SDL ROTOR REMOVAL

2005-07-17 Thread Vernon Ritchey
To hold the assembly to unscrew the bolts holding the hub to the disk, I
temporarily bolt the hub back on the wheel. It's a lot easier to hold the
wheel than the hub or disk. Also, PB Blaster seems to help get those screws
started. I also put a but of blue locktite on them when I reassemble. Make
sure all mating surfaces are clean before assembling.

Subject: [MBZ] HELP 300SDL ROTOR REMOVAL

Please cross post to [EMAIL PROTECTED] As I only get the digest.

Doing brakes on my car.

I cannot find a section in the damn CD manual.

I've got caliper off.

Do I have to remoce the hub to remove the rotor? Oh S&%t, I have no
new seals.

Please confirm or repute.

Regards
