IIRC Mythbusters sucked up a half gallon of gas into a shopvac, and
left it run for quite a while without any "boom".

Diesel, being harder to ignite due to the vapor pressure difference,
should at least be as safe.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Mobil wifi hotspot connections

2012-09-12 Thread Walt Zarnoch
I've got 4G-LTE through Big Red, and I get 14Mb down, 5Mb up.
That's indoors on the edge of service (1 bar, can't find a REAL dB value...).

I've tethered on 3G since before android was born, and it was ok, just
not as fast or useable as cable is.
The big issue is ping time and delay, or dropped packets.

You also need an unlimited plan (grandfathered in! WOOHOO!), or you
end up going over the 2GB cap quite quick.

Re: [MBZ] Eating belts

2012-06-16 Thread Walt Zarnoch
My guess is that the old alt wasn't putting much of a load on the system,
and the old belt was on it's last legs.

New alternator allows full charge current and puts more stress on belt,
belt snaps.

Long story short, replace belt and then see if it happens again.

Worst case, keep a spare belt in the trunk in case it snaps again.

Sounds like the initial short-out was dealt with by the pump-out, but the
water that wicked back up the lines is finally causing them to corrode away
to nothing.

Be sure to isolate it as a line issue first, by unhooking everything else
after the phone drop, putting modem as first device.

That may mean a long phone cord out to the box as a check.

I know Verizon will try to prove the problem is in your house wiring, since
then they don't have to fix it.

I guess I didn't provide enough evidence of the sarcasm and funniness that
I was trying to convey, haha. :) :D :p

I'm an EE with ME background and embedded systems experience, so at least
on paper I could do some of the work.

I'd likely devise my own control circuitry or hijack the existing to do my
will... It has been shown that a Prius without the nany-limits on starting
torque can do an impressive 0-60 time.

And I HATE the BofA ATM machines... The one closest to my house has never
had a touch screen calibration or even the dignity of the windows sounds
being changed...

Save the car, get a 21 speed.

It has been said a pedal bike can get across DC quicker than a car can.

They also take up less storage space than the car. ;)

It sometimes trashes expansion valves/orifice plates, but mostly works ok.

It's really a "I just want it to work for a season quickly, and on the

Re: [MBZ] OT gps phone tracking

2012-05-26 Thread Walt Zarnoch
If it's more of a "the car is for work and work only" thing, then just
track the car using a cheapie walmart android phone and google latitude.

If it's to see where he is at all times, irrespective of cell coverage,
just get a satellite beacon ankle bracelet. At least then he'll know he's
being tracked, and it'd be a psychological deterrent...

Are you letting him see your location at all times as well?

Guess I'm torn both ways on the ethics of this, based on what is more
important to know location of.

The easiest would likely be to have a long father-son talk and set the
ground rules, zero tolerance, for the agreement to have the vehicle for
work.

Or have him pay his own insurance, registration, and gas, for his own
vehicle that he bought at fair market value, so he doesn't see it as "cool,
transportation at the cost of pops knowing where he thinks I am".

Amen to that.

I find that trying to sip anything at all at 60 is a recipe for "fun", even
when you're a passenger.

Then again, I'm also one of the only 20 somethings I know who refuses to
talk on the phone while driving, txt while driving, keep the GPS screen
on, blah blah...

Guess it comes from driving stick shift and having to actually look at the
terrain to know when to shift instead of just planting right foot and then
mashing the brake...

Much more fun that way, even if the little buggers chew the carpet. :P

I'd try 3M spray adhesive, they make one that will bond most anything to

I say get a $35 HID kit and slap it in.
I have had zero problems with the 6 or so kits I've bought for myself and
friends, and it sure beats changing bulbs every few months!

You'll want a 6000K color temp range to mimic the "white but not blue"
light if an over-watt halogen.

I was once pf the same mind, but I now find myself driving with the sunroof

Less wind noise than windows down, and why not use it if it works just fine?

I do know MB and Hyundai (forgive me for putting them together...) both
add quite a bit of extra bracing to their sunroof versions, in my Tiburon
there is at least one more cross brace on the roof, and the opening is
fort-knox reinforced.

Re: [MBZ] E diesel

2012-05-02 Thread Walt Zarnoch
The furthest thing from my mind would be economy if I were buying a new
Mercedes.

The ride is paramount. I want it PLANTED on the road. No exceptions.

Must have brakes capable of stopping entire car when an idiot cuts in front
of you out their driveway, that are predictable, and stay that way.

Must also have enough power to comfortably get up to speed.

I think marketing sunk their teeth into this a bit too much, but the
engineering is on the right track.
Electric used as speed boost, small battery, and a diesel power plant are
good in my book.

My musings.

[MBZ] Idiotic traffic lights. Was: UPS Diesel or floating gas?

2012-05-01 Thread Walt Zarnoch
One morning on the way home from work, I had to sit for 10 minutes at a red
light, "no right on red" sign, no traffic at all, nobody but me at 3:00 am.

I just shut the engine off and waited. Eventually a taxi went down the main
drag and the light tripped.

Would have said "sod the right on red", but the cops were out in full force
as well... :/
