Re: [MBZ] 1977 450SEL Update

2005-09-30 Thread Tom Hargrave
Dave,

Yes, you can see the damage with the valve covers removed. One or more cam
lobe will be scored and in extreme cases, the lobe will be rounded off. In
addition, the associated cam follower will be damaged because they fail
together.

The root cause is an issue with the plastic oil spray bar mounts. They
disntegrate over time and when they do, most of the oil leaks past them &
the cam lobes starve for oil.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

Would you be able to tell from looking at the camshaft if you pulled
he valve cover?
If so, what are you looking for?

Thanks

If the cam was worn bad enough to cause a miss you would have a hell of
a ticking sound I would think.

I wish you well, but...

Beware the oogy cracked dash. :(( I never saw a 116 450SE/L that still had
an intact dash, especially if it was blue. Also, inasmuch as most of them
seem to have been owned by chain smokers, the interiors usually smell of
stale tobacco fumes. Yecchhh.

Most of those older Benz's do not require any type of high octane fuel. Higher
octane gas which is mostly required in LEV's or Low Emission Vehicles. Higher
octane say 91 or higher does not burn faster than say 87 or 89 it burns slower
which results in a cleaner burn. Almost all of the pre 90's Benz's run fine on
low octane and don't require anything more than 89 or less

Rust free 116? Those had rust problems in California...

I had a 1979 450SEL from 1991 through 1998.

It was a great car and used regular unleaded fuel. Fuel mileage was the
main reason I sold the car. My mpg were usually south of 16mpg. The best
I'd ever seen was on the highway driving was 17 or 18 mpg.

A huge car and very stout of performance. My 116 was my first Mercedes, and
I've owned nothing but Mercedes since then.

I will run on regular 87 or whatever just fine.

Tom,

Nitske's page on the 450SEL cover 72-80 model years so his fuel consumption
figure of 16 MPG is pretty general. Given that the 72-78 had a 3.07 rear
gear, the 79 had 3.06(?), and the 80 had 2.65:1. Your 77 would have a
performance gear and I would suspect 16 would be hard to average pulling around
 4100
pounds.

The fuel is specified as US: no lead fuel with no mention of octane, which
implies low octane is OK. The 6.9 page, for example, calls for "super" in the
fuel category. US horsepower for the 77 is quoted at an anemic 180 (@4750
rpm) with a compression ration of 8.0:1, which should be very happy on the
cheapest blends. Fuel tank capacity was 25.4 gallons.

Some other specs: 0-60 in 10.8 seconds with a top speed of 127 MPH. the 77
sold new for $24,506 (east cost POE). Of the 59,575 sold in the USA, 10,042
were labeled 77s.

If you buy the car, I would be glad to scan the two pages for your files.
