Re: [MBZ] 1985 300SD odometer repair - follow up

2008-01-29 Thread George Larribeau
Odometer gear follow up:

(Referenced to odometergears.com/mercedes.html E1,E2,E3)

On my unit upon removal the E1 gear was trashed, 3 pieces, crumbs and the
brass insert. The E2 and E3 gear looked fine, however after I tried to clean
the other 2 gears the E3 gear crumbled, I went Obsessive Compulsive on it
and glued it back together and like I previously indicated it is currently
working. On my unit the E1 and E3 gears were made of the light nylon colored
stuff and the E2 gear is black (this is in contrast to the pictures on the
web site where the E3 gear is black. ) I suspect that the light colored
stuff is the root cause of the failure ( it got old). My E2 gear looks real
good however at this point I am replacing the E2 and E3, I have all ready
replaced the E1 gear.
Speaking of the E1 gear, from the web site: The E1 gear will press on
with your thumb. Take a pair of wire/side cutters and squeeze firmly on the
brass fitting on the drive shaft. It should slide right off. This gear will
be a press fit over the plain shaft.
Well I was unable to get the gear to push off, I became real concerned of
the force I was applying and that other plastic could break. I used a 6
pair of Klien diagonal cutters and cracked off the brass insert kind of like
what a nut splitter would do. The E1 gear did press on at this point with
out major fuss but this does require some care.

I got my odometer gear today from odometer gears ltd (odometergears.com).
It installed per web instructions. The gear that broke in my unit was the
one with 12 teeth and the brass insert. The new one is all plastic, and I
had to remove the old brass insert, It kind of split off with 6 Klein
diagonal cutters. I was somewhat fear full of breaking some thing but it
worked out for me. The new gear pushes on .

Now the lubricating waxy stuff on the gears looks to me like it needs some

George,

The odometer can be fixed with super glue. First push out the instrument
cluster by reaching up behind the dash. Remove the speedometer/odometer unit
from the cluster. You will find that the gray metal toothed gear is slipping
on the odometer shaft. To repair, warm the odometer under a lamp and using a
very thin xacto blade or similar tool, carefully apply a couple small drops of
liquid (not gel) superglue on the shaft precisely where it meets the gear.
It's a tight fit but it can be done. Let cool and harden. Keep the gear moving
a tiny bit if it wants to adhere to the housing. Reassemble cluster and
install. I have performed this procedure on a couple of my cars and it has
worked perfectly in both cases without any problems.

I guess given enough saw blades and glue, but why?

The W123 oil pressure gauge is mechanical. To use the W126 electric oil
pressure sensor you have to change oil filter housing. Found this out trying
to put a W123 OM617 in a W126.

W126 speedometer is electric, W123 is mechanical.

Anything can be done, but the 126 has an electronic speedo 123 is
mechanical. You would need to change the tranny or try to install the
drive and driven gears and rear housing.

Probably not feasible. Buy a cheap GPS that'll retrofit into anything.

You need new gears which are easy to install yourself www.odometergears.com

To remove instrument cluster:

#1 get metal coat hanger
#2 cut two straight pieces about 6 long
#3 put a 90 degree bend in each about 1/4 inch up from one end making an L
#4 put one L on left side of cluster one on right. Push the small part of
L inbetween cluster and dash. Twist each one such L is pointing towards
center of cluster.
#5 Pull.

Cluster comes out and you can disconnect stuff on back. Then side out from
behind steering wheel.

Not that I found that for all the cars I have played with you can just grab
instrument cluster by hand, no metal hooks or L things, and just pull out.

George...
Trampas has it right but
BTDT and a couple of cautions

-Number the stuff you disconnect, so you will know where to put
it back. Particularly, electrical connects.
- To disconnect oil pressure line, be gentle and find some small
hands if you can. I think it is 2 10mm open end wrenches. One
to hold the fitting on cluster and the other to turn flare nut.
- Cluster should slide out to the right. between steering
wheel and dash..

AND most of all... While cluster is out and oil pressure line is
disconnected DON'T start the engine!!!

Good luck. and Take Care,

I'll bet you reset it while you were moving. Don't do that anymore.

www.odometergears.com$25 any gear. You can make hooks out of wire
hanger but you should be able to remove lower panel and wiggle a couple
of fingers behind the IC push it out, no need to remove wheel. Unplug
your wires and pull out the rest of the way. No oil pressure line on
your model. The speedo repair isn't too bad to do, don't go getting
sneaky and knocking miles off while you're in there.
