Yes I understand. My reservation is not the bullet holes, but rather that
the miles are not stated on the copart listing.

Biggest line item on a swap is typically labor. If you're going to pay
someone else to drop engine x into chassis y, you probably want them both
to be of known provenance.

I am also not sure I can license the 648/560sec combo in California, but it
might be possible.

Meade I would not be inclined to undertake such a swap myself either. It
could be a cool business, retrofitting older cars with that motor, though.

Sounds good. Better than sticking another used part on it.

This is NOT something you want to DIY. While you could rewire the harness,
there are interior bits you can’t fix if bad or questionable that a rebuilder
could/would.

I can dig up the info on the guy in AL. He sells on eBay, too. Really, really
good work, and quick turnaround, too. I’ve used him several times and always

I was driving the SL600 on Saturday, it was running really well. Stopped
at a light and as it dropped to idle it was barely running, misfiring,
smoking.  I managed to limp along until I got a couple miles to where I
was going.  Shut it off and it ran fine.  I need to tear into the
wiring, it has likely all gone to shite on the throttle bodies and
ignition bits and whatever else. Just have not take the time to check it
out.

There is a Russian guy in NJ who rebuilds all this stuff too, esp on the
600s.  He has lots of vids on his web site about working on them, but
not the actual rebuilding/resoldering.

This involves sending it to the guy in Alabama that rebuilds them and spending
the $200 or so to make sure it’s 100%. It’s not a DIY repair.

guess they would roll. The glovebox had a manual for the truck (or one

sitting on the ground, that would have to be lifted or removed to move

Re: [MBZ] 1994 e420 woes

2019-05-07 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I see on the FB 210 list that the crank sensor gets wonky and causes
something like this, maybe some other sensor in there that talks to the
computer.  Does it throw a code?

Anybody had this happen before?

So I went and took a look at this thing. The whole cab was pretty much
a rust bucket (well, not a bucket, more like a colander) -- roof was
perforated, windshield surround was a good part rusted through, floor
boards rusted (due to rain through the roof), seats moldy. The engine
bay looked half decent and fairly clean, no idea if it would fire or
not. Tires were holding air, not sure how much I would trust them but I
guess they would roll. The glovebox had a manual for the truck (or one
like it). The box was in good shape. The lift was all rusty and
sitting on the ground, that would have to be lifted or removed to move
the truck, which would require getting the engine running and some
hydraulics pumping, or some muscle (and air wrenches) to remove it. Had
a big air tank, I presume for the brakes (I think I saw "air over
hydraulics" on some site), no idea how to get those working but maybe
they would be a (good) surprise.

I was thinking to offer the guy $500 and have it towed off, use it for
storage for now then see about getting it running. Or maybe try to fire
it up and see if it might move and stop. That would be interesting.

Plate says it is a L 1116/51, 25000lb max weight, says like 10k empty on
the side, 21k GVW.

The OM352A engine looks to be fairly common in Unimogs too, looks like
parts are readily available and guys who deal with them quite a bit.
Groups on benzworld and peachparts for mogs.

NHTSA have a VIN decoder!

Manufacturer: MERCEDES-BENZ TRUCK COMPANY INC

Vehicle Type: TRUCK

Model Year: 2013 (no it's a 1983)

Make: MERCEDES-BENZ

Thoughts? I guess I could throw out a number to the guy, see if he
bites or wants to dicker. Antiques shop, I think they are selling it out
and getting rid of all the old stuff they have (was some beautiful old
furniture for pretty reasonable prices, not that I need more old sh*t).

The shifter is wy down between the seats...

The Pisten Bully the snowmobile club owns has an OM352LA, the LA is
intercooled and turbocharged. Transplantation seems harder than its
worth but having a spare engine appeals...

Wonder if it can get running (and would stop)? Looks like tires have
air in them.

Offer $800? From a quick googling it looks like these are fairly common
and parts are likely easy to get.

Is it BaTworthy?
