Re: [MBZ] 2004 Golf TDI

Golf wouldn't need the front of the car to come off, a Passat would.
Interestingly in '03-'04 (maybe '05 too) the Passat had an inline engine while
the Jetta and Golf are transverse.Still a PITA to do a timing belt on because
there isn't enough space between the strut tower and the engine to get the belt
out (as there is on my '98) so the engine has to be tilted. Remember also that
the timing belt drives the water pump (again unlike my '98) so if the water
pump seizes it takes out the timing belt and the engine. Thus most people
replace the water pump with the timing belt. IIRC on the PD engines its 80,000
miles. Most people also opt to replace the passenger side motor mount since its
likely to get damaged shifting the engine to get the belt out.
Disabling the EGR is controversial, apparently it helps the engine warm up
faster and thus if its disabled fuel economy suffers. Also supposedly the new
ultra low sulfur fuel doesn't carbon up the intake as badly. If you're driving
a diesel as intended (long distances running hard) its not such a big problem
anyway. My Indy took a look inside and said my car was pretty clean so we opted
not to pull it apart. Its got good power and economy so its probably fine.
The updated software/hardware is now VCDS (although I don't know what that
stands for) VAGCOM is old school. Surprisingly it works well on my Macbook Pro
running Windows in VirtualBox.

Make sure the timing belt has been changed. It is an interference engine.
Job is a PITA on that one. The front end must come off, IIRC.
Also the intake collects carbon from the EGR. It can be disabled
with the correct software (VAGCOM I think).
Good car. My friend got 250k miles on his before he traded it off
for a Honda Accord Coupe. Not as solid as a Mercedes, but not
bad. There are a couple good forums for these cars, too.

Oh yeah, only use synthetic diesel oil. My friend used nothing but
Shell Rotella T-6.

2015-04-04 Thread Curt Raymond
'04 is a Pumpe Deuce engine so no IP the injectors are triggered by the cam,
makes a little more power than my '98 at the cost of a little fuel. I can
average 50 in summer pretty easily and have gone as high as 55. Did 47 on the
run to Michigan last summer but we were running hard and loaded heavy.

My Indy says the PD engines are hard on timing belts so don't skimp. If you do
it yourself buy the timing tools, the vcds cable pays for itself. If you hire
it out make sure he knows TDIs the tensioner is backward from a gas engine.
Many dealerships are known to install timing belts wrong which is disaster...
Finally buy no parts from "Hans" or "Prothe" a known purveyor of garbage.

[MBZ] 2004 Golf TDI

2015-04-03 Thread Peter Frederick

I just got delivery of my nephew's 2004 Golf TDI, so I guess I'll be
finding out how I like VW diesels.

My brother (who lives in Washington State) has had a Jetta TDI for a
while now, gets 52 mpg on the highway, sometimes 55, so I'm eager to
find out what sort of milage I get running to and from work.

I'll get the title and insurance straightened out next week and report
back. Purrs like a kitten, and my brother in law who drove it over
today from St. Louis says it runs fine.

125k miles, looks pretty good -- lowest milage car I've bought for a
while, and enough years newer than my 88TE that I may not need to
replace it before I retire.

Life is always an adventure!

Peter
