Car looks familiar. About 30 years ago I test drove one with the same oogy
velour interior. Can't remember the exterior color. Driver's seat had a
big divot in the foam - supposedly the owner always wore his gun in a
holster, which wore a hole in the seat.

You do realize that the 6.9 in the 116 is a dry sump engine because it's
too tall to fit in the engine compartment, don't you? And 275hp is not much

The way I understand it, it's not all about hp. The extra displacement of the
V8 should give the engine more grunt at higher road speeds. My guess is that
at 70 plus mph the 6.9 will give the 3.0 V6 a run for it's money. Of course,
I've driven neither car so I can't say based on experience.

Dry sump means there is no oil pooling in the bottom of the engine...no oil
pan. There is a separate oil tank with a pickup tube to supply all of the oil
to engine under pressure. It's not a bad system. I have hundreds of flight
hours with a Continental O-470 that was dry sump. It made inverted flight and
aerobatics a breeze for the engine.

Re: [MBZ] 6.9 conversion

2011-07-22 Thread RELNGSON
Hey, that's interesting---I don't remember seeing that one.   How did
they manage the suspension conversion?   At least on my Euro 500SEL
with Hydramat, everything on the corners of the car is just a little
bit different in a thousand little ways from a regular 126---no room
needed for springs so it's  instead taken up with lots of little
fittings and brackets to support the hydraulic lines running all over
 the place...

Well, it's a 116, not a 126 but you may be right in that the suspension may
not have been swapped. But, the owner had a big book full of progress
photos of the conversion and he had the two cars side by side to swap the parts
over. Maybe it will show up next month and I can refresh my memory. Anyway,
projects like this are fun to do.

For a 6.9, you have to compare the value of your enjoyment for the rare
times you drive it vs. the repair cost, recognizing that it is probably a
depreciating asset unless you keep up the maintenance (cosmetic and
mechanical). In other words, even if it's free this is an expensive
ownership proposition.

Probably messed up from sitting. I'd allow a good $5000 for parts.
Excluding labour. Add the parts to the asking price, and ask if a car in
this condition is worth $15,000. If it has been idle for some time, I bet
you'll find may more little things that need attention, once it's going
again. But, it's an old car, and these were limited, special cars, so they
will never be cheap to run. Always cheaper to buy the very best condition
example you can find, when shopping for cars like this. My thoughts anyway.

Ludicrous. I've seen a half-dozen for sale locally over the last ten years,
for anywhere from $20K (for what appeared to be a babied one-owner garage

no doubt a money pit, although I seem to recall it was sitting high up as if

something I'd ever consider paying a shop to do unless I were physically

I think most of the mechanic bits on the car were pretty robust, and it only
shows 130,000 or so miles. But when they sit, or problems are left, oh boy,
the co$t to put them right soon climbs!

Not sure of the part numbers, and what bits were shared between models.
Some bits, are amazingly affordable on our cars.

most people who works on cars, stealerships especially, believe a 600
is an opportunity to buy a new yacht. The same, believe a 6.9 is an
opportunity to buy a new house.

From the factory perspective, the 600 was a hand finished limited
production car, and prices for parts reflect that. From the same
perspective, a 6.9 is also a limited production hand finished car,
but it is built on a production platform. That means any parts
common with any 116, are the same price as any 116 parts. The parts
exclusive to the 6.9 are priced similarly to 600 parts.

You do know the secret M100 handshake, don't you?

That said, i'd love to have either, if anyone wants to support it.

The only non-Diesels I ever had a lust for.

Christy,

Here are some websites with considerable info about the 6.9... An
awesome car W116 Body w/M-100 engine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_450SEL_6.9

http://w116.org/

http://www.m-100.cc/ Then click on 6.9

http://handbook.w116.org/matrix6.htm
This does not cover the M-100 6.9 engine, but references much about
450SEL body, etc. Manual pages are downloaded to Adobe Reader.

Hope this all helps you learn more.

Good luck and have fun,
