TBCs, like most pro gear, usually don't come cheap, though.

This is true. A mostly useless piece of data is that Betamax recorders
are nearly immune to the effect - but they don't strip it. Also, any
VHS deck with a manual video level control (high end pro decks,
usually) will not be too bothered by it.

Curious. A device called a TBC (time base corrector), which is an
essential part of any non-hobby tape-based video production system,
will do the same thing. By "rebuilding" the sync portion of the signal
the Macrovision parts are (rightly) tossed out with any other "trash"!

So I am surprised to hear that it's illegal to _posess_ one since there

There are actually 2 pieces of professional gear that I have that will get

Oh I've also got an editing system that doesn't have any problem stripping away
macrovision. In fact I've recently been transfering my VHS movies to DVD. Yes
its a waste of time but I do it while I'm at work. I do phone support so theres
really no problem with my recording "Raiders of the Lost Ark" for instance
while talking to a customer.

DVDs have two layers of copy protection. The first is a digital
encryption scheme called CSS. This is widely misunderstood; it does
not, in any way, stop someone from copying an entire DVD to a
dual-layer
disc and playing it in a DVD player. What it does is prevent
extracting
the video in a form that can be played, edited, or reencoded, unless
the
proper decryption key is supplied.

The second layer is what prevents you from making a video tape
recording
of a DVD you're playing back. It's called Macrovision. It's an analog
scheme, also used on rental videocassettes, and in the case of DVDs
it's
actually applied to the outgoing signal by a circuit inside the DVD
player. I won't go into the technical details here, but it acts by
interfering with the automatic gain control in the VCR. The movie
industry is also augering for digital TV to include a similar scheme in
digital-to-analog set-top boxes, to keep people from making analog
recordings of digital broadcasts. It'd be switched on and off by a
"flag" in the signal, controlling what you could record and what you
couldn't.

At home I have a video projector that simply cannot deal with
Macrovision; it confuses it into thinking it doesn't have a valid video
signal. I ended up buying a "video stabilizer" to strip the
Macrovision
encoding off the signal. While I don't use this device for copying,
and
my use of it infringes no one's copyright, I had a hard time getting it
because the DMCA makes it illegal to sell or even to posess it. It's a
strange world we live in.

That's SUSE's and RedHat's policies, at least. In fact, SUSE's copy of
Xine is crippled so it won't work with DeCSS; you need to grab both the
DeCSS library and a different build of Xine. Note that this means you
can still play *unencrypted* DVDs out of the box, but every commercial
DVD I've ever seen is encrypted.

For a while RedHat wouldn't even ship MP3 software, because of their
interpretation of the patent license.

Frankly while I'm not in love with the MPAA in any sense what Andrew had described is illegal for a reason. Its sensible that you shouldn't be allowed to copy a rented movie, if you could easily do that why would you ever buy one? The same is doubly true of rented computer (and especially Playstation) games.

DVD producers are in business to make money, they don't put out disks just
because they love doing it. When companies cease to make money they cease to be

When you rent a movie there is NO allowance for copying it. The one backup copy
is for things you actually own. You don't own a movie you've rented, the same
is true if you borrow it from your buddy.
If you wanted to watch it later you'd need to either rent it again or buy it.
Once you've bought it you'd be allowed one copy for a backup.

Re: [MBZ] Another video, this time with pontoon and /8 aka

2005-12-05 Thread Curt Raymond
You can make A copy (as in one) for yourself but not to give to your friends
thats distribution and is essentially taking money out of someones pocket. You
also can't setup a theater and charge people to come see it.

I've had this come up before with stuff I've made. I did a wedding video, the
client wanted 2 copies on DVD. Okay the first is free, the second is $10 (which
is about half the going rate). I find out later that they copied my DVD over
200 times...
I called 'em up and they scoffed, they tried the "Its our wedding" but if
they'd read the contract they'd know its MY video. Being the nice guy I am (and
mildly hurt that they'd do this to me) I suggested I'd take $500 and not bring
a lawyer into it. The groom decided he'd rather threaten to kill me than pay.
In court that statement came back to haunt him, I got $4000. The judge said
they'd ought to pay the going rate because of threatening me.
By illegally copying my video they were literally taking money away from me.

Okay so now with a little more time heres some of the other issues on the 190D,
Kaleb if you've got a w201 sitting around this might be time for you to get rid
of some parts.

The car has electric seats which work if you fiddle the switch a bunch, do I
have to take the door apart to access the switch?
The backrest adjustment parts of both seat switches have broken and so tilt
isn't really adjustable, I looked on Rusty's site and didn't see 'em, anybody
got a source for those?

The rear windows don't work at all from either the front or door switches. I
haven't replaced fuses yet, that'll be the very next thing I do.

The antenna doesn't move and is stuck way down. It also seems to be missing
the grommet between it and the fender. I imagine I'll need to at least replace
the grommet. I don't particularly care if the antenna moves or not but it seems
to me that if I'm going to go all out to make the car nice, which I am, then I
should fix the antenna. I know there are sites devoted to antenna r&r, links
would be appreciated.

The shift boot is totally wrong, its huge and the shifter is sort of lost in
it. I see Mercedes Source has a booklet on how to get that console apart.
Anybody on here like to spill the secret? The wood is nice in my car so I don't
want to hurt it.

Thats all for the moment, more to come.

Also, fair use is not a defense against being charged with a DMCA
violation. If you have to break any kind of encryption scheme to make
your copy, it's illegal even if it's fair use under copyright law. This
is a travesty, in my opinion, but those are the rules we currently live
under.

"Fair use" is shifty territory in the USA."Fair use" isn't clearly
defined and the law is based on paper right - and electronic media
sure changes how the game is played!

So, having a _backup_ copy of a copyrighted "all rights reserved"
video is likely covered by fair use. If you make a duplicate so that
you can keep one copy in the den and one in the living room it is not
clear if it's covered by "fair use". If you give a friend a copy, you
are almost certainly outside of "fair use"

For those who _want_ to share their work without giving up all rights,
there's CreativeCommons license.

http://creativecommons.org

Of course, just because it's unlawful doesn't mean you will get
caught. Just look at speed limits

Philip, not a lawyer - honest!

A few months ago I bought the "Fascination: The History of the
Mercedes-Benz Brand" 2-DVD set that the trailer promotes. The trailer
is WAY more interesting than most of the actual product. They use a
lot of company and ad footage, but the commentary totally misses the
boat. It could have been done SO MUCH BETTER and that's really
frustrating. No interviews, no details. Just a lot of stock with a
vague narrative. Some of the German reviews of this have been so
glowing that they can only have been written by employees of the
production company.

On the other hand, as an assembly of MB stock footage it's not bad if
you can get past the fact that they re-use a LOT of clips, and that
there are some factual errors resulting from the English translation.

But here's the kicker. The DVD is available ONLY from the Classic
Centre in Germany. Even German dealers can't order it; this was
confirmed by calling the Classic Centre in Germany directly. The DVD
itself was 30 Euros, plus 6.50 shipping INSIDE EUROPE. If you have it
sent to the US or Canada, the SHIPPING ALONE is another 60 Euros! The
order number for the NTSC version is B66046424.

I would say it's worth $30 (I had it sent to a German address), but
I'd have been VERY irritated if I'd paid $100 for it. It's not nearly
good enough to warrant that price.

It MAY be possible to get it from the new US Classic Centre in
California. I know that MB Canada and MB USA don't have it and cannot
get it through the parts channel.
