The original sales material touted the feature that the rigid cage
in the Smart was designed to activate the crumple zones in the car you
hit. That means that under the BEST conditions, you will experience
at least twice the impact force during an accident. Under most
conditions it will be much more than that. Every accident is unique,
but that does not put the odds in your favor.

The local dealer had a raw frame/cage on display in the showroom to
demonstrate how strong and safe it is. Maybe so, but the laws of
physics still apply when a 6000lb truck or SUV hits it going through a
red light. The structure might do its thing, but the occupants are
gonna pay the price.

I hear the diesel did not stand up so maybe you are lucky they didn't import
them so you could buy one. A local
parts outfit had a bunch of them to run around town dropping parts to the
shops. I hear the engines did not stand
that sort of use for very long. Too bad, as the diesel was the only reason they
were interesting.

Penske does it all. Don't know about MBUSA involvement with the warranty though.

The local dealer here just shuttered their Smart outlet.  Positioned across
the street from the main MB dealership it was a purpose-built building for
Maybach, then used cars, then Smart.

Smart is a decent concept but the sole US transmission is terrible on its
best day, a trait emphasized in every review I've read.  The need for
premium fuel for its Mitsubishi engine didn't  help.

So what did the Brabus version have that the regular one didn't?
Engine and suspension mods? I'm trying to picture a lowered Smart with
fat tires, but it's just too ridiculous.

Re: [MBZ] Brabus Smart Car

2010-01-18 Thread E M
The Brabus model had different rims, larger in the rear, and a bunch of
Brabus cosmetic items, stitched emblem on the seats, brake and gear lever,
and the suspension is lowered a bit, but no mechanical mods as far as I
know. It looks sporty. If you want sporty, you probably keep walking
past the Smart showroom. lol. I have been YouTubing the car a bit, and
seems in Europe, there are some engine mods and chips available. Not sure
if they're in house, or aftermarket.

The limited Brabus I mentioned, is shipped to Brabus where they do the
interior. My understanding is, the regular Brabus models from the dealer
just have the Brabus bits bolted on while doing down the Smart line, but not
100%.

For a city car, they seem ok, but I'm still not sure how they managed to get
those doors past the side impact requirements. Look mighty thin to me, and
I'm not really keen on the idea of my hips and shoulder being part of the
crumble zone in the event of a side hit. Yikes!!

[MBZ] Brabus Smart Car

2010-01-17 Thread E M
I stopped in at the dealer the other day to pick up some brochures for a
friend on a Smart car, as they also have a dedicated Smart Car showroom.
The had several on the floor, including 2 Brabus models, and a special
limited addition model 10 of 10.

I think they're pretty over priced for what they are, but they are kinda
neat for a city car, or second car. The Brabus had a pretty decent
interior, not cheap looking at all. Not that it should look cheap for the
money! lol.

Anyone on the list own one, or have any experience servicing one ? We have
a ton of them running around town here now, but I never really took much
notice of them before. They were never my type of transport, but with
traffic AND parking becoming what it is here, who knows, it might start to
look like not such a bad idea for a second in town, or downtown car in a
couple of years.

Thoughts ?
