Re: [MBZ] Cheap diesel for sale

Anyone building drag engines for serious competition is more than capable
of rebuilding a continental or Lycoming or what have you. My cousin is a
truck dealer and rebuilds airplanes and races cars also. There is no magic
to rebuilding any of those motors.

There are specifications of course. If the machinist chooses not to follow
them, then of course there could be problems.

I called Mike yesterday at metric about this issue. He said there are a few
tricks that you learn over time that might make a Mercedes-specific build a
bit better, but that if a shop reads the specs and follows them, and they
are used to working on diesels, they would be able to do as good a good job
on a mercedes as on any other engine. He also said that if the engine has
10,000 miles on it after the rebuild, there is nothing seriously wrong with
it.

FWIW,
Karl

A 12L or 14L big truck engine is really not very similar to the
OM617. Just because someone is really good at overhauling and
rebuilding a Cummins, Detroit, or Caterpillar engine does not mean
they will do well with the Mercedes.

They might - but it's a bit like asking a drag racing mechanic to
rebuild the Continental airplane engine. They are both gasoline
engines, can't be _that_ different - right?

Mercedes has long run very tight clearances.
I wonder how much of the bad reputation for rebuilds is the result of the
machinist not knowing or not wanting to use the factory specs.

Yes it might be worth looking at a receipt and even calling the machine
shop. He gave me the name. The seller owns a truck repair shop.

I have been nibbling at him for awhile now, just to see if he is ready to
come down. My assessment is that he is pretty sharp. Nobody stays in the
truck repair business long without having a good machine shop. All the

Re: [MBZ] Cheap diesel for sale

2016-08-10 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Karl,

The description of the problem leading to the engine rebuild raises a big
red flag. If the engine ran too long with a bent connecting rod, that
cylinder may have worn in an oval pattern and was (is?) no longer within
tolerance. If the shop that rebuilt this engine did not properly measure
and either ensure that cylinder was within Mercedes-Benz spec, or properly
replace the liner and then bore and hone to spec, the rebuild will not last
as long as a factory motor. The pistons are fitted to the cylinders, so if
all they did was install fresh rings, or renew the cylinder liner and then
re-use the piston without ensuring it was the correct size, engine life may
be shortened. Unless the shop has a great reputation for rebuilding MB
passenger car diesel engines, then reputation means nothing. I would stay
far away from the car you have described, or budget finding and installing
a good used original engine. We haven't even begun to talk about bearing
specs or any of the other little gotchas that can decrease engine life.

You could insist on a used engine oil analysis, which would give you an
idea of what is going on inside the engine. I would also want to get a
written money-back contract, so that you can judge the oil consumption
(which should be less than a quart every 5k miles). Measure the engine
compression. Test coolant for traces of exhaust gas. 0-60 time should
meet or exceed factory spec. All this would be a lot of work for a $3k
car, that's why I would keep looking if I were in your shoes.

Re: [MBZ] Cheap diesel for sale

2016-08-10 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Thanks that is all good info regarding rebuilt motors.

Apparently it stopped firing on all 5 at 277k. When opened to investigate,
the connecting rod was 3/16 short, so I'm guessing it had a head gasket
leak and hydrolocked or something. Anyway the top and bottom were rebuilt
at a reputable shop as were the pump and turbo and transmission with all
Mercedes parts.

I'm not sure I buy the "Mercedes crate motor" magic stuff. Any diesel truck
engine rebuilder is going to be pretty competent at that, and there are
plenty of other diesel motors out there doing comparable hours between
rebuilds.

Injection pumps: there is a bosch rebuilt 603 pump on my 606 right now, and
it works very well.

I certainly value my 123 more with a rebuilt head and new transmission.
Even if people think it should have gone farther than 200k before doing
that work, it is now at least 200k miles further from needing it again.
Maybe 400k, like you guys say. But maybe that feeling is also just a
function of having written the checks, and in any event it is farther than
I am likely to ever drive it.

Neither engine nor pump should need to be "rebuilt" in under 400K
Trans Maybe @250 to 350k. (assuming oil changes as prescribed and
OE quality filters used (mann only for the 124 trans).

I'd not buy a car with a "rebuilt" OM603, unless I discounted the cost
of the replacement engine and installation. Factory crate engine, as
Curt said, is a plus. The kleb car I had had a "rebuilt" IP (not from a
dealer) and never did trust that IP. A Bosch dealer can't get all parts
nor specs for calibration for a MB pump. According to Bosch, they are
"MB only." You have to get the rebuilt exchange, or new pump from the
dealer. In truth, a really good IP shop can replace elements, and if
they have had access to a known good pump, can determine the
calibration, within reason. I think they can't get parts for the
governor, and may not be able to test the governor. At least that USED
to be the case...

The first OM603 I had with 300k, I did a compression test, and all
cylinders were 425psi. That is the high side of the factory spec for a
new, broken in engine, or an engine in perfect shape. At 300k, you might
want to check chain stretch...

I'd rather have a perfect running 200kmi diesel than a rebuilt one, unless I
knew exactly who and how it was rebuilt. Now, a factory crate motor, that's
really worth something.
There's probably a lot more rebuilders who would do a good job on the
transmission, and anybody can renew the suspension as long as he knows to
tighten the bolts on all the rubber bushings with the car's weight on the
suspension and to use a spreader bar when adjusting toe-in.

Oh, Kaleb's 300d looks nice, but I have been dealing on one like it for
awhile, and I want something mostly rebuilt. So I'm thinking of buying this
1990 model instead.

The motor was completely rebuilt, as were the trans and suspension, which
should count for something I think, as compared to driving examples with
nearly 200k on them. That stuff is not free; the parts alone for the motor
are probably 5k, plus 2k for the trans, etc. I just want to drive something
- not fix it for once.

My only other MBZ cars right now are the 606 87 wagon and my 123 wagon,
neither of which I am inclined to let go of just yet =:-)

Re: [MBZ] Cheap diesel for sale

2016-08-09 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes

What would this car be worth with faded paint, a dented trunk lid, newly
fully rebuilt tranny/turbo/injection pump/motor, new ball joints, shocks
etc, and an AC that doesn't turn on (but heat works and it has a new
compressor)?

I'm thinking 3k, but could it be more?

Thanks for input.
