Re: [MBZ] Clean '94 E320 cabriolet on BAT

2020-01-29 Thread Clay via Mercedes
We all agree the newer than w124 mercedes are not worthy of a hold position,
nor will they be found in operable condition to qualify for classic/vintage
licensing.

I really miss owning cars that are not bogged down with toys, blinking lights,
more computing power than an old Packard Bell from Costco, and have nanny
features which make it impossible to repair/replace the interior. Too much
explosive power with all those air bags to bother fixing headliners, A pillars
and such. Let alone be able to swing a wrench under the hood without having an
old Cray on hand to decipher codes and re-anable functionality.

Welcome to the age of automotive appliances. And the kids have no interest or
desire to acquaint themselves with the cars from the past 25 years, nor
anything older, as those vehicles are killing Greta Thunderbird fortified whine.

2020-01-29 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Agreed! 123s look better. 124s don't look bad, they just look more
modern.  The modern look started with the W126.  No other car designed
in the 70s from any maker has the modern look.   126 and 124s still look
'in" style.  I'd rather drive a 126 or 123 for long distances, but a 124
is ok.   124s remind me of the Karmann Ghia, where you left foot was
nearly in front of your right hip.

I don't know if 124 Diesels will ever go up that much, but the floptops
will, and AMG and E420 up might.

After the 123's peak, then 124's will go up-but I don't think they are as
classi c in styleas the 123's.
YMMV
I have had both and my 124 was the best car I ever owned.

Is this a true statement: "under the hood is the 3.2 Liter inline
6-cylinder that is one of the longest lasting engines Mercedes Benz ever
built."

well, from 1970 or before, until about 20 years ago when the 240D and
123 300Ds started to age out, ANY running Mercedes Diesel that was not
rusted away or crunched was worth at least $5000 on the private sale
market.    The glut of 81-84 Diesels, purchased after the second "oel
crisis" came on the market about 2000.    I paid $5k for the 81 in late
98.  Had I waited a year or 2, I could have bought one for $1500...
The glut is gone now.   Unfortunately cars produced 15-20 years ago are
electronic toys, and because of the unavailability and high cost of
electronics, these cars will never be valuable after they leave the
stealer lot.

In 1972, I paid $4000 for the 200D, and thought i had a real deal.
Turned out I overpaid, but that's another story.

Sold new for $80 k and now lucky if it reaches $20K. This depreciation is
shocking for those of us taught the party line that Mercedes "hold their
value". Even the St. Christopher medal couldn't prevent such a sharp
decline, although it did prevent serious accidents...

When will the curve flatten and head back up? Will this non-classic
designed cabriolet ever attain its original sticker price? Will
silver/gray become chic in the year 2050?
