[MBZ] Considering a '73 450SLC - am I crazy?
OK gang, so there's a nice-looking '73 SLC (with the small bumpers) with just over 100k for sale nearby. The last thing I need is another car, but this one is basically exactly what I'd like in terms of colour and mileage etc. As I understand it, the SLC is basically the W114 suspension components. I already have a W108 with the same engine and transmission. Those seem to be pretty reliable as gassers go. So what are the nightmares to beware of on an SLC? Did they adopt the heater fan placement from the W114? Do the windshields leak? Door seals? I know what to look for on a 123/126, but I'm not really sure where to start on a 107, let alone an SLC. Any tips would be appreciated. David, It's an old Mercedes and will cost you lots of money to fix-up. I think you need to buy it! So what are the nightmares to beware of on an SLC? Did they adopt the heater fan placement from the W114? Do the windshields leak? Door seals? I know what to look for on a 123/126, but I'm not really sure where to start on a 107, let alone an SLC. Many SLC body parts are special to only the SLC. Such as glass, trim bits, etc. May extend to door seals as well. Windshields are glued in, not particularly prone to leaking but can of course. 107's are rust magnets, so watch out. D-Jet has extra fun, I don't have one yet but beware of fuel leaks and resultant fires. (Tend to underhood fuel rubber in other words.) Heater fan is easy to get to, it's under a hatch accessed from underhood. For the right price I'd certainly consider one. Fuel economy will not be great. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Considering a '73 450SLC - am I crazy?
One of these days, there will be so few unrusted SLCs left on the planet that they will actually start to appreciate. Until then, STAY AWAY! I restored a 1978 SL C, and it was money POORLY spent! Filling the dash cracks and redying the seats and vinyl dash was no fun, and the dyed portions of the plastic peeled off :(( These cars rust if you breathe on them, and the engines regularly need an expensive valve job before 200K miles, when they start to seriously burn some oil. The fuel economy sucks, and the plastic interiors are brittle and prone to breakage. The peeling paint on the rear quarter window louvers are another joy to fix - NOT. That being said, they are quite distinctive and almost beautiful. If I had room to store one I would purchase the LATEST possible example (1981 380SL C) in showroom condition and coddle the hell out of it as an investment. I would pay up to $15 K for a perfect example with under 100+K miles, fully documented. To restore a rusty and/or beat up SL C would easily cost more. My 2 cents. AFAIK, the market for W1113 SLs has never crashed. They have always been worth at least $10K as long as they are in reasonable condition. My parents got 145,000 miles out of a 1977 Nova (250 I-6 3sp) and it was still a reliable car when they sold it. That was considered a minor miracle at the time. Re: [MBZ] Considering a '73 450SLC - am I crazy?
It's a great driving car when the suspension is right. the '73 will have about as much power as the latest 560SL. Fuel economy will suck. It won't have the crappy ACC system - that's a plus. If it's in good shape, and not rusting, go for it. Wash out the insides of the fenders - over the headlight buckets indies the front fenders, and inside the rockers behind the rear wheels OFTEN if they aren't rusting yet. Don't let the sunfoor leak - it will rust the floor pans. I loved driving my '78 450SLC, but I just couldn't get over the gasoline enigne, even though I did a top and front end rebuild of the engine.
