Interesting.  For Florida it says “broker” for private individuals.  That would 
suggest that I can’t bid on anything titled in Florida unless I use a broker?

A week ago I put a test bid on an SL500 to see if it was open to public 
bidding. 

Yesterday, when the same car came up for live bidding, complete with the big 
red thumbs down symbol to show that I've been outbid on this lot, it says 'you 
are not eligible to bid on this item'. Huh? It was a dealer only sale and they 
let me place preliminary bids on it?

This was the Ionia auction site, where I bought my ML350 on a preliminary bid 
last summer, but I was able to bid on the ML during the live auction too.

[MBZ] copart $300 140 diesel

I am getting closer to finishing up the copart 300SD with the factory 
crate motor.  Got the condenser swapped out and ac charged.  Changed all 
the filters and the oil. Air is now ice cold.  Next thing I need to do 
is motor mounts.  Aside from that I need to address the read deck 
speakers and replace the ugly aftermarket rubber whip antenna with the 
correct one.  I also want to explore putting the radio system back to 
factory.  One thing I did notice is the odometer appears to be dead.  I 
don't think I have seen that in a 140 before.  Anybody done 140 odometer 
gears? I usual place does not specifically list 140 gears so maybe I 
have to pull it apart and see if they have the right tooth count available.


I had it sitting in the driveway running and the wife came out and asked 
if it was gas instead of diesel.  It is that quiet.

the roads in this state are not bad enough the drivers are even worse. On the 
way over some old lady in a ram changed lanes into the back of my trailer.

auction started I watched it for about an hour until the 190 came up.  
Most of the cars were getting very little action. Some late model

I took a 3 hour lunch break yesterday to check this out and bid on it.

It has the parts I need to fix my 2100 mile car that's slowly depreciating in 
my garage. 
(except for the side curtain airbags, seatbelts and hood)
It's the same color and bodywork, (slightly rare RS nose/tail/side ground 
effects package) and even the same month of production, so there was a very 
good chance of the black granite metallic paint matching. 

I wanted it pretty bad until I saw the dent in the hood, still bid $2600 on it 
at 2pm the day before the sale, I was the first person to even bother bidding 
on it. By the time I got home last night it was sitting at $2650. By morning it 
was $2700, which means that yesterday some other retail idiot with access to a 
pro account kept raising his bid by $50 until he beat me and then somebody else 
outbid him overnight. Sold for $4550, which is a lot more than I paid for my 
less damaged 2016. That makes the 2nd time I found a RS the right color, and 
the 2nd time it went for at least 50% more than I expected. I'm not going to 
pay over $5500 out the door for a parts car and then buy seat belts and airbags 
too. Somebody must have really wanted to restore it.

I would think a person who would purchase a benz would not be swayed by the 
fashions and need to upgrade to something that may not provide the level of 
service you expect for transport.  Diesel, probably paid off long ago, so only 
investment would be in keeping it on the road.  It could be serviced most 
anyplace in the world, unlike Detroit iron or the disposable nature of Asian 
rides.  A very forward thinking commitment to quality, much as a spouse, but 
more reliable.

you couldn’t were remote duty sites, like on the DEW line or out in the

CoPart doesn't guarantee anything.
They give it their 'best effort', and you get what you get. 
Like when my dealer bought his wife a Buick, and the loader driver managed to 
shove a fork through a back tire and mangle a wheel. Oops, sucks to be you, 
glad we aren't responsible for the damage we did to your car after you paid for 
it. Then a month or two later he was ordering a wheel bearing for his wife's 
car. 
Hey, that isn't the same wheel the yard monkey forked, is it?
You know, it IS that same wheel. I wonder if they hit it hard enough to ruin 
the bearing too.

Usually they're zip tied to the column until shortly before the sale, then 
stuck in a filing cabinet in an envelope with the VIN on it. I've had to check 
out keys for cars I wanted to PPI, and they never had trouble finding the keys. 
Made me hand over my driver's license in exchange for the keys. 

Maybe somebody misfiled the envelope, and they were too busy to care about a 
guy from out of town who only bought one car from them?

Yes, I did save the photos. I sent the GM of the location an email a 
little while ago, so we will see what they say.  I do recall seeing some 
disclaimer somewhere on their website about keys not guaranteed even if 
it says it has keys, so I am sure it will go nowhere.  I can guarantee 
those keys are in there somewhere.

[MBZ] Copart 560sel

I just picked up that 560 from copart I got for $350. This copart was the least 
organized and most unfriendly one I have been to so far. I go in and pay. They 
give me title. Then I have to proceed to a window to pickup keys. Most of them 
have the key in the car zip tied to the steeeing column. So the the little 
minority girl goes back looking for the keys. Comes back says can’t find them 
it’s not running and driving and walks off. Ok. Well the listing says it has 
keys. So I also where the loading area is, she points outside and said out 
there. So I stand out there a while and eventually the fork lift driver showed 
up. I give him the sheet and he brings the car and drops it on the trailer.

Now on to the car. This very clean. The paint is very nice. Interior is decent 
except for a couple of stains on the carpet and the front seats are going to 
need new covers. I knew the passenger seat was cracked but it’s also separated 
at the bottom and not attached to the frame. The drivers side was ok except for 
a huge hole in the side of the leather and it is also not attached to the 
frame. Front tires look new. The spare has never been out of the trunk and the 
tool kit is still in the plait bag. There were now books or anything in the 
car, and no key in the car. Engine looks very clean and dry. It’s got about 
180k and was probably taken care of. It had a for sale sign in it still for 
$4800. I guess the guy was trying to sell it, then probably donated it.

No idea it if will run, I have to get a key first. Will the dealer order a key 
for me if I have the title and bill of sale but it’s not transferred yet?

auction on the 19th.  Sure wish that happened before the other auction

it would let me bid without a license. Fortunately somebody outbid me a day or 
two later.

124's and 210's seem to be pretty unloved for as robust as they are. Better for 
us (anyone who does work on their own cars) to find bargains on nice, easily 
repairable cars.

That's par for the course. 
When I picked up a car with a flat tire, I wouldn't let him load it for me, as 
I wanted to switch the wheel first. Then I couldn't start it, so next time he 
drove by I waved him over and he picked it up and loaded it for me. 

Usually you just get scuffed up plastic belly pans out of the deal. 
The drivers are usually talented, and put the forks dead center under the car. 
But stuff happens sometimes, and they disavow all responsibility. 
Last year my salvage guy bought a Buick for his wife, and they forked a back 
wheel hard enough to break the rim. Then right after she started driving it, a 
wheel bearing failed, the same wheel that they forked.

the last time I searched, or cars listed within the last 24 hours for 
example.  Or is there a way to set alerts to show when cars that meet a 
certain criteria are listed?

Check out the inventory at Don's in Ladson, he's got a '"brace" of W210
cars.  I think this is the yard that we were planning to go knackering at
next.

I looked at the local LKQ inventory for a car that might have a front 
fascia for this E300, nothing there.  So I looked at Copart and they 
have 2 cars in Columbia, a coupla hours up the road.


Looks like a bunch of flood Benzes, and there is one that doesn't look 
too bad for a donor.
