Re: [MBZ] DIY Paintless Dent Removal
Got the PDR tools today. Comments: Kit is reasonably complete, I'll also need some alcohol (empty spray bottle included in kit), a glass protector panel to slip inside doors to keep the picks from scratching the glass, a heat gun for warming the paint in sharp creases, some longer picks in the 30-45" range to reach the bottoms of doors, and it would be handy to have an airbag door spreader in addition to the plastic door wedge. The kits on AliExpress have instruction booklets, this one does not. Plenty of instruction materials on Youtube and I can always buy a DIY book or two. Space is limited in the tool bag, but you can cram all the non-pick tools in it and get it zipped shut if you try hard enough. I even managed to get the LED line board and a USB wall plug in there. Has a few pockets in the sides to hold the glue tabs, knockdown punches, hand puller etc. If you use the bag you'll find yourself digging for whatever is in the bottom of the pile in the bag. Everything appears to be cheap but serviceable, except the pick tools aren't polished to a mirror finish and the flat bladed picks have a milled texture on the sides almost like they're files. Not only would the milled picks take the paint off the inside the panel, I bet they'd emboss their texture in thin fenders and it would show through the paint. It'll take some grinding/sanding/buffing before I'd dare use those things. I haven't tried the LED line board so I don't know if it'll stick solidly to a car or not, and I suspect the lighting is inadequate. Maybe I should have bought a set with an unlit reflecting line board instead. I guess you get what you pay for. Chinese PDR picks usually run around $10ea when you buy a set, and I don't know if they're any better than the ones in this kit. I got ten picks included in a $125 kit, the nonpick items basically duplicate the $90 sets on AliExpress, and similar sets of ten picks run $70-100. > On October 9, 2017 at 12:02 AM Mitch Haley via Mercedes > wrote: > http://www.ebay.com/itm/262977911935 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Interesting, my HF heat gun has been a trooper, it's heated my boots to put bees wax in, heated the compressor so it'll start when it's cold, defrosted the fridge a couple times while I've been slow about getting parts. I think I paid $10 and it's been well worth it. I have a Milwaukee Electric heat gun. The real deal, metal nose on it, etc., not a slightly dangerous hair drier. Two heat settings: hot, and catch-on-filre hot. The lab techs where I used to work would light their cigarettes in the lab with tools like these. I have a HF heat gun that has served me well for a number of years. I think I paid $8.00 with a coupon. It got dropped a while back, breaking the back corner on the top which exposes some of the innards, but it still works just fine. -D > On Oct 9, 2017, at 8:42 AM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes > wrote: > > >> On October 9, 2017 at 8:21 AM Max Dillon via Mercedes >> wrote: >> >> >> My Hazard Fraught heat gun died quickly, was replaced with a hair dryer that >> certainly is not as hot and SWMBO tried to claim it several times (so I've >> got to hide it well). I bought one from HF for $20 that gets VERY HOT! Have used it several times with no problems. YMMV. Re: [MBZ] DIY Paintless Dent Removal
One of the youtube channels is mostly a collection of trailers for a video education series. The F1 guy I linked doing the fender/door an an A class has a lot of demo videos, but they're not classroom quality. And I've got several bent body parts laying around to practice on. I can start with the discarded fenders from the 2003 ML and the 2016 Cruze. The Cruze is made of tissue. The ML will take some serious force to straighten. It seems the main point of it is to get close with the glue tab pulling, then set up the light box or lined reflector panel to highlight the remaining damage, and SLOWLY work it back into shape. But I saw one guy who worked the raised edges of a roof side rail dent a LOT before sticking a glue tab in the middle and pulling it, then he worked it some more. The way he talked he could feel it softening in the center and wanting to come back out to its original shape while he worked the edges. [MBZ] DIY Paintless Dent Removal
I'm getting ready to buy some tools and give this a try, but I'm not ready to shell out $600-1000 for a complete tool kit. If I can get a good start for $200 I'd be happy. I'm thinking of buying this, although I have some reservations about the yellow pull tool for the glue tabs, especially the flat non-swivel base. I figure I'll use the T handle and slide hammer most of the time and won't need a really good pull tool, and if I only use it on flat surfaces the flat base won't matter. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2014-The-newest-pdr-car-dent-repair-device-for-car-automobile-sheet-metal-for-BIW-sag/32229745770.html Since that tool kit is only for pulling and hammering(tapping), I'll need some push rods too. This set seems a better deal than the ones on Aliexpress if it's the same quality: http://www.ebay.com/itm/10x-Auto-Body-Dent-Removal-Pdr-Rod-Tool-Kit-Hail-Door-Ding-Repair-Set-B/381876391881 Comments/suggestions? ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
