My indy was unable to fully diagnose the CEL on my 2014 GLK using his handheld system (he's an MB certified tech who had worked at a local dealership). He could only hazard a guess that it was a bad sensor, but no guarantee, so I took it to the dealer to avoid throwing money at the problem. The dealer's proprietary diagnostic computer revealed cracks in both air charge hoses, which I had them replace. This led to a huge improvement in fuel economy and better overall performance, so I felt it was worth the money. What Floyd says. If you’re not going to do most of the work yourself, it would be a waste of money to invest in a STAR system. One of the cheaper handheld things can be helpful in narrowing problems down and making sure your mechanic doesn’t try and extract his monthly boat payment from you. A properly equipped and configured STAR system will work on MBs from the mid 1990s to at least 2012-2014. One other advantage is that in some of the later models, like the W211s, it also allows you to enable features that are otherwise locked down by the factory. This is more or less true for any car. I think I paid $250 for the VAG-COM cable to connect to my VWs and it definitely paid for itself several times. The computer is a tool useful for diagnosing a myriad of problems on newer cars. You can buy the little handheld systems like the iCarsoft for $150 and they do a lot but not everything, they will show most codes and such but might not be able to clear/reset all systems. SRS light could be bad passenger presence switch, or could be a halfass crash repair. CEL could be something serious, or could be that sensor. I'd consider it worth a PPI and maybe even try swapping that sensor as part of the inspection. Yeah, the intake flap (“swirl flaps”) are another issue these engines are affected by, and the fix is pretty significant. As long as they don’t fail in the “bad” position (closed? SRS, a bad passenger seat switch would do that. So would a crash that caused any SRS components to deploy if they didn't reset the computer after replacing it.
