The gasser pumps are set up differently I think, only diesel pumps are a direct
fit. I suspect a gasser pump could be modified to work, but I haven't explored
that yet.

If they have pics, often the auction photo of the doorframe sticker is included.
That's how I found the donors of the fender and hood on my Green-Black metallic

Michigan. Both were listed as blue, but I looked at dozens of blue MLs to find
those two.

2019-10-05 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
The valve isn't really fragile, but it won't tolerate abuse, and unlike the 123
valve, the 124/201 valve can't be rebuilt.

If the spheres are totally flat, you apparently need to unhook the linkage and
move the valve to the drain position to drive the car.
I needed to relocate the 16v after the spheres died, so I let the rear tires
down to 20 psi and drove slowly. Now it sits low and won't pump up. My fault.

Max, despite rumors to the contrary, you CAN rebuild the dual pump.
BTDT.  Q got kits for me. I'd suggest ordering 2 kits, as the likelihood
of buggering one seal is fairly high, or get one kit, take out the seals
and buy extras at the local bearing house.  The inner seal between the 2
pumps is the tricky one.

They are actually pretty simple.  As in any hydraulic device, keep
everything in order and cleaner than surgery.  For gear pumps, make sure
the gears are marked and teeth engage the same teeth in the same place,
etc.  I'm sorry, I don't remember what I used to drive the inner seal in
place.  Probably a pipe and a washer/bushing

Hi Max. The SLS is going back to stock. I got two of the last 3 sportline
SLS struts out of Germany for it, and sportline springs. So I will be
keeping the SLS valve. I did have to selectively modify the valve mounting
bracket with a 2lb hammer to get a 22mm rear 500e swaybar to fit, but other
than that it will be pretty much stock sportline suspension in the end.

Waytago!  Strong work! Good info!

Some year I should borrow that diff mount tool.

What Dan said for the strut bumpers.  +1

Swapping a 500e subframe into the 87 wagon is one of the more pointless
things I have done, but the old one is out and I am building up the new
frame, so no going back. Just did it to fit a 210mm diff in for a limited
slip carrier. The whole assembly will all be new stuff, except the pinion
seal - didn't feel like messing with the nut on the pinion.

It used to squeak from the left rear wheel at slow speeds on bumps. I
thought it was the spindle bearings on the lower control arm, but I was
wrong. Most of the stuff had already been done a few years ago with Meyle
etc stuff; those spherical bearings were new and smooth. Of course I had
new OE ones, and the tool, so out they came anyway.

Come to find the SLS struts have a spherical bearing on the bottom. This
chassis must have over 300k on it, and I'm pretty sure these were the
original struts. All oily, the little bellows things were long gone, and
the left lower ball joint was completely dry and sticky. I got some new OE
sportline ones out of Germany a while back, so in they go.

The rear springs were some dropped height aftermarket affairs. All they did
was wear out my rear tires on the insides. New OE sportline stuff going in.
Then I will have to put new ones in the front to match.

The little toe-in eccentric links are NLA from Mercedes, so I got some
Lemforders from partscontainer on ebay. I don't think Lemforder make them
any more.

The diff mounts are holding me up. Turns out the OE mounts are NLA. We are
talking like early 90s 500sl stuff. I found some in Latvia so they are
probably on a boat somewhere. I even have a fancy diff mount removal tool,
but of course it is for a non v8 w124 and the SL/500e mounts have twice the
diameter, so the dies on the removal tool won't work for the larger mounts
without ripping the centers out of the old mounts. I guess I will round up
a generic bearing removal tool with a set of dies on ebay or amazon to get
the mounts out and in. If I can get the old ones out in one piece I will
dissolve the rubber out and fill them with urethane and maybe use them in
the e420.

Once I get the new 500SL diff mounted, I can measure the driveshaft length
and see if the v8 sedan rear section will fit.

Fortunately the rear wheel bearings had already been done by the previous
owner. That job is supposedly a bear on the wagons because the bearing
diameter is bigger and the rollers get caught somehow when pressing it out.
So at least I don't have to go buy a press this weekend.

Broke the shield over the fuel pump area (I don't know what it protects on
the diesel cars) just ahead of the right rear wheel well. It had a rounded
off nylon nut that was totally inaccessible with the subframe halfway out.
So I could not remove it. Subframe got caught on the shield and ripped a
corner off. Someone in NC had an old stock part. Those shields are pretty
strong, with fiber reinforcement of some type.

Finally got David Hendy to send me a new red wiring connector for the
airbag, so that was very cool. He is a good guy. I broke the old one when
changing the multifunction stalk out.

I have been driving the car around with only one front seat for awhile.
Amazing how roomy the car is like that. I have been procrastinating doing
the second front seat cover. The sportline seats have more clips and the
upper ones are super hard to install once the new cover is on. One day. The
original cover on the passenger 500e seat I am putting in is still pretty
decent anyway. Driver side was shopworn with some holes. GAHH covers are
OK, but nothing like the original leather. Maybe the original leather
looked like the GAHH stuff when it was newer, but I doubt it.

Does anyone know how to put the bump stops on the front struts? Can the top
mount just be removed, or is it spring loaded?

If anyone needs a non-v8 w124 diff mount tool, or the fancy one for the
spherical spindle bearings on a 124, let me know.

I believe you can swap the snubbers by just removing the nut on the top of the
strut and carefully lowering the control arm enough to get the rod from the
strut out of the mount.

I’ve done it on an R129, which has slightly different suspension.

Attaboy.
Max beat me to asking for the 124 SLS control valve.
I think my 2.3-16 ate another one when the spheres dies.

If you are removing the SLS, sell me the dual circuit steering pump and the

[MBZ] Fwd: SL diff mounts r129

2019-10-04 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
