Re: [MBZ] Grrrrr!
The cost of such a system might exceed the cost of repair of the bumper, although I would take great satisfaction in getting the miscreant to pay for repairs. I've got a spare front bumper waiting to be installed on my cabriolet, so I can scavenge the impact strip from the old bumper that is coming off that car. Then I will need to repaint a white impact strip to a dark blue, this is a good excuse to try the "$50 roller paint job" method. - Max Charleston SC On Wed, Aug 29, 2018 at 10:07 PM G Mann via Mercedes wrote: > After close inspection of your picture, I do not see a dash camera mounted > in the window. > Get one, wire in a manual switch, so you can turn it on when you park the > car and leave it unattended You would be glad to have a clear video of > the car and driver that hit you, then drove away the cops would be > impressed when they watch it also... Re: [MBZ] Grrrrr!
The one I have in the front window has 1080, and a 120 degree field of view, which covers both front side windows and forward.. Impact sensor trigger won't get you the whole story. you want to record the other vehicle that recklessly backs or drives into you, real time... much more powerful if you are lucky, if it takes pics of the driver and occupants, for later ID. I have one I bought on some special, an Anker of some kind, you can set motion detection on it while the car is parked and it will record when it sees something moving. It has 3 sensitivities to adjust how it triggers. It’s a pretty nice unit, has WiFi and an app to download vid right to your phone. Kinda a catch-22. If you spend the money for a decent clamp-on DC ammeter, you have acquired a device that is adequate to measure low ohms. Still, I like DC clamp-on's, but consumer grade ones are flaky. Adding enough ohms to measure the resistance with a Harbor Freight multimeter causes it' own problems and in practice is a real PITA... You can get close enough with a cheap multimeter to diagnose basic problems - maybe +- 5 amps. -Dave Walton On Dec 16, 2007 11:21 AM, Jim Cathey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Will this also check how much current draw the starter is taking?? > > No, not really. > > > yes, Ohms = Volts / Amps, Amps = Volts/Ohms, Volts = Ohms/Amps > > You need to measure the resistance of the cable, then measure the > > voltage difference from the same points when current is flowing. > > The difficulty there, of course, is that you're not going to have > equipment that can reliably measure resistances that low. > > I use a clamp-on DC ammeter for that. > > Another (cheaper) option is to acquire a shunt resistor and put > it in series with the battery. A solenoid click followed by dimming lights and warm or hot battery cables is a locked up starter motor, the typical failure mode on these engines. I've replaced two so far (different cars) -- they crank slow for a day or two, then lock up solid. There is no alternative to replacement. Maybe but I doubt it. In that case ice had built up under the counterweight. In the morning I removed that ice and all was well. I put the charger on for about an hour this afternoon, the 4amp setting produced less than 2 amps on the meter. I don't think the battery was discharged significantly. When I tried it in the (relative) warmth of the day the starter turned but sounded HORRIBLE. All grinding and nasty. I think maybe its lost a bearing. Anyway its good to know it'd probably start if I wanted it to. I'll park on the hill at work on Monday since theres no way I'll be able to get in to the Indy until Tuesday at the earliest. That'll also allow me to get the starter from Rusty... -Curt Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2007 00:35:40 -0800 From: "Kevin Kraly" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] GR! Curt, et al. On an '85 190D it isn't too hard to get the starter out, or check the connections. Apart from the lower bolt the rest is accessible from the drivers side top, after removing the air filter box complete. A 190E is (was) a lot more difficult as the cruise actuator is in front of the starter and it is under the fuel injection stuff on the hard to remove manifold. Not fun in the cold, but most is doable from under the hood. Fred Moir Lynn MA 85 300TD 87 190DT Bent At 06:29 PM 12/14/2007, you wrote: >'85 190D won't start. Specifically it won't crank. Re: [MBZ] GRRRRR!
Drivers' side, and you won't be able to whack it, it's buried up there. Most likely it's seized, typical failure on those diesel starters, they lock up solid. Changing it is horrible -- supposedly you can get the old one out and the new one in, but on the one I worked on the old one fell out on me when I got the solenoid wire loose (no way to reach it on the gasser from above, diesel may be better) and I didn't see how it came through. Never did get it back in without taking an engine mount out, which I recommend. Re: [MBZ] GRRRRR!
You're really going to enjoy getting to the starter on that thing in the snow. Don't recall mine having neutral safety, so it's probably just a low battery. Battery being less than a month old doesn't mean anything anymore, unfortunately. Check the cables, make sure they're good and tight, and that you have a good ground. There's a lot less juice required to run lights than the glow plugs and the starter capable of spinning a >20:1 engine.
