Re: [MBZ] Getting Back Into the Klatta Klatta Fold
I went through this recently with my '78 240D except I had keys for both. My car had a junkyard ignition with one key and VIN doors/trunk with another. I pulled the ignition and reworked it so it matches the doors/trunk. After only 2 years under my ownership its finally keyed right. ;) -Curt Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2012 14:56:51 -0600 From: Craig To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Getting Back Into the Klatta Klatta Fold Message-ID: <20121001145651.15160d4a2c6ce11953453...@pisquared.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII On Mon, 1 Oct 2012 13:15:08 -0500 "Kaleb C. Flickering temp is a bad connection. Could be the connection to the sender, could be the sender itself, could be the gauge, could be the instrument cluster ground. I like to blame the harshest environment first, which would be the sender. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Like Craig said check the ground for the cluster. I had the same problem on SWMBO's 240D when I got it. Do a Citric Acid flush and use the MB recommended Coolant. I have a spare cluster if you need a gauge. Let me know what part of the door handle you need. I also have a manual tranny shifter boot and radio if you want it. Call Rusty and order a new ignition cyl. It comes with a key also he can get you the Valet key. Russ W On 10/1/2012 17:38, Bob Rentfro wrote: I shall. I would say with 105 deg.F. ambient 90 - 100 deg.C. coolant temperature is normal, depending upon how fast you are driving and the road grade. > Secondly, the temp gauge was flicking around alot. up to 100, > down to 70 or so (never down to the peg though). What the deal with > that? That's due to a bad instrument ground. With the instrument cluster out, in front of where it normally sits and toward the center of the vehicle you will see a bunch of brown wires with ring lugs on their ends and a bolt holding them all to a piece of the metal frame. Cleaning these lugs (and using a contact cleaner) will solve the problem. The bolt holding the lugs is much easier to get to with the dash out, but that's much too much work to do to fix a bouncing temperature gauge. One cheesy way to solve the problem is to run a new wire from the ground on the instrument cluster to the engine block. > Going to clean her up now and give her the good once over. > > think I did okay for $800. Re: [MBZ] Getting Back Into the Klatta Klatta Fold
That means the gauge is faulty... you can try cleaning it with some contact cleaner if you take apart the instrument cluster. If you hit the dashboard, you may find it will also jump around. If thats the case, 100 isn't really an issue 70 is probably more likely as the actual temp of the engine. I've only seen this go high, never low, when needing cleaning. Normal its what you're used to, 80-95 or so. If you're seeing 70 after running a while, you probably has a stuck thermostat, which isn't too uncommon. Good luck with your $800 ride! Some of the most enjoyable cars I've owned were less than $1000. Theres something about the idea that the car owes you nothing. Anything it does right is positive return on the investment.
