If you have a source for all the right parts (which is probably more parts
than you would think, i.e., you probably need to have a donor 240D that
you are going to leave incapacitated), you should be able to make the
swap.

I found that out when I changed our 240D with an automatic transmission to
a naturally-aspirated 300D with a manual transmission. With the major
parts from a donor and smaller bits and wear items from Rusty, everything
bolted right together and fit the chassis without problems.

I will keep this car until the wheels rust off from it. It will be worth
the same for scrap with either heater control. It is worth more to me to
have the controls I like to use for the years I drive the car. I like the
dual controls the manual system has. I set my side a lot cooler than Toni's
side and it makes long trips much better for both of us.

Its not worth the effort. Not only is the effort huge, as already stated,
but you will devalue your car.

Put the effort into replacing the vacuum modules, getting a rebuild ACC
unit, and replacing the other little bits that are required for it to work
right. You'll be rewarded with years of reliable service.

I would expect that a W123 body is a W123 body regardless of what model
it ends up being and that unused holes and such are plugged. As I
mentioned, turning a 240D into a 300D as far as the drivetrain was
concerned was straightforward, though a lot of work.

Me too!

But it's not just the controls. The manual system uses twin
heater cores and twin flow valves. I think that means the
number of holes in the firewall don't match.

I suspect the rest would be a fairly straight forward swap if
all the parts are available. I have had a manual control car
stripped down that far, but not an ACC so it's just a guess.
