Wiggle the pump pulley when the engine is hot, or wiggle the fan blade if its on the same shaft. When I did that I got hit in the nose with a stream of coolant that came from the pump bearing/seal area. Gerry Jon Agne: Take it out and get it up to normal operating temp, Mine is steady at 90C. Check out everything after it’s hot and pressurized. When my aux pump failed (cheap Chinese crap), it wasn’t readily apparent. It was spewing into the alternator which was somehow vaporizing it. So I checked the level when I got home - normal. Maybe the new cap did the trick. There were no leaks at either the aux. watr pump or any of the radiator hose lines. Having it checked for the presence of coolant or exhaust would be an easy way to get some piece of mind. Before our '82 240D was converted to a 240D/3.0, it had problems with coolant level dropping. It turned out to be a pinhole in the side of the radiator that leaked slowly when it was hot. Leaking only when hot, so the leakage evaporated, and being on the side, where one could not see it, both contributed to the difficulty of finding the problem. It finally went away when I changed the radiator to a 300D radiator. Take it out and get it up to normal operating temp, Mine is steady at 90C. Check out everything after it’s hot and pressurized. When my aux pump failed (cheap Chinese crap), it wasn’t readily apparent. It was spewing into the alternator which was somehow vaporizing it.
