Once in a while Dan's least favorite big box hardware store, Menard's has a
rebate sale on Quaker State synthetic for $1.99 a quart. I stock up then for
the "other than Mercedes" vehicles.

I use NAPA synthetic in all my cars (except the OM617s which get Delo).

I watch for sales and stock up. It's private label Valvoline, from what
the local NAPA store manager tells me.

One thing I always liked about M1 that seems to still hold true is its
volatility, or lack thereof.

In 1989, I bought a new Plymouth Horizon, and mostly ran 5W30 M1 in it
every 7500 miles. Around 1993-94, Castrol ran a rebate on their
Syntec  (5W40 or 5W50, I can't remember which) and I tried it. They
only had one viscosity grade, presented it as one size fits all but it
was too thick to run in the Horizon, I just didn't know better back
then. Within 5000 miles the oil level had dropped quite a bit. I never
added oil in 7500 miles with M1. My 1977 Saab was even better, I'd
drive it 7000 miles on M1 and the dipstick would still read at the
full line, and the oil would be fairly clear. In the late 1990s,
Meijer started selling store brand 'full synthetic'. I put it in the
Horizon, and was a qt low at 3000 miles.

More recently, the 220kmi Saturn goes 11,400 on the oil life monitor
without a lot of oil consumption, been running 5W30 M1 in that since
186k, and I believe the PO used it most of the time too.

While I realize there isn't much relationship between lubrication
quality and lubricant evaporation, it seriously annoys me to have oil
just up and disappear under conditions that M1 stays in the sump.

The subject of various brands of synthetic oil isn't simple:

"Some "synthetic" oil is made from Group III base stock, some from Group IV.
Some from a blend of the two. Mobil sued Castrol and Castrol prevailed in
showing that their Group III base stock oil was changed enough that it

But you can't buy that stuff any more.

When I was reading all the M1 MSDS a year ago, pretty much the only stuff with
more than 20% Group IV base stock was Extended Performance and Annual Protection
in 0W20 grade. I ran it the EP 5000 miles in the turbo Cruze and it held up
well, but the iron level was a bit high, possibly because the oil was marginal
on HTHS viscosity.

So now I'm trying to decide whether to run 5W30 of something cheap like M1 or
Kendall GT-1 and change it often, or pay 3x as much for Redline or Amsoil and
run it for 10-15kmi. I've seen analysis of 5W30 M1 after 7500mi in a Cruze and
it's pretty much used up. Makes me wonder how long the current formula 5W40
holds up in a turbo diesel.

My gasser Benz are easy, just run M1 Euro 0W40 in everything now. I've never
analyzed it, but I'm sure it's good for 10kmi in a M112. But I'd be wary of
running over 5000 miles in a turbo engine, especially over 100hp/liter.

The ARFCOM oil guy (one of the owners of Lyden Oil) says it's typical 'full
synthetic' (comparable to Mobil One et al). He'll sell me Kendall GT-1 MAX for
$35/12 qt case, which is 10% over distributor cost.
Which makes Costco pricing pretty much wholesale for DEXOS 1 certified oil.

https://www.ar15.com/forums/General/Paging-foxtrot08-Kirkland-brand-synthetic-oil/5-2283869/

Group III (and especially Group III+) is getting pretty good, at least for
short
term (under 10kmi) use, and  you can get it for under $10 a gallon in tanker
quantities.

Group IV is more durable but expensive. My friend pricing at Lyden is $101/12qt
case of Redline, my preferred customer pricing at Amsoil is $112 with free
shipping for Signature Series 5W30. Considering the fact that Amsoil has to UPS
it to me, I figure those prices are equivalent.
If anybody wants Amsoil before my membership expires at month end, let me know
and I'll see if it can be shipped to you at my membership price.

Group III (and especially Group III+) is getting pretty good, at least for short
term (under 10kmi) use, and you can get it for under $10 a gallon in tanker

I forget who makes it now, but I saw somewhere who it was with an
indication that it is a base for other synthetics.
