Just pretend you are a guest worker and you won't need insurance, a
drivers license, registration, or ownership. Works here in Houston
quite well. And you won't even need to know how to drive either, just go.

Ahh, I do see an in-transit permit on nysdmv.com Hmm, I kinda think they
might figure out that I've already registered the car before and not let
that one fly... And I suppose if I have to pay $10, it's not THAT much
worse to pay $46 or whatever just for the ease of dealing with it,
especially for probably more than 30 days...

Thanks for the info though!

Do you folks have repair plates? Around here the garages usually
  have
  a

transport a vehicle to the garage. The garage will usually lend you

Another option is to get a tow truck. It will be cheaper in the long

but also thought it would cost more than
the tow to replace the back bumper on the truck if the Jeep happened
  to
   bump me.

I have towed with just a rope. I towed a friend about 35 miles. He
  had
  a
mid 80's full size Cadillac with an
engine knock. He kept the motor running to provide power steering and
brakes and I towed him with my old Chevy
pickup. It was pretty smooth. You really want to be able to trust the
other driver no matter whether you are in the
tow vehicle or the towed vehicle.

Also towed a Chevy pickup home from about 50 miles away on a 1/2
  nylon
rope behind a Ford pickup many years ago.
No real problem. I drove the tow vehicle and my father steered the
  towed
vehicle. I don't think he trusted me to
not hit him from behind. I was pretty young then and he just
  instructed
  me
to keep the speed down to about 40 mph
and let him worry about not running into the back of me. It was
  pretty

Levi,
I tow cars all of the time..It is illegal to tow with a strap unless
the car has tags.

You need to use a towbar to be legal...Simply take a piece of
heavy pipe and run a chain through the middle and attach it to both cars
as tight as you can get itThe cops really look for if you are
being safe and smooth while towing rather than what you are towing with
around here.

If you need, I have a trailer if you have a truckMy truck will be

In Arizona, we can pull and print a 3 day pass, on line, for a dollar, that
allows us to drive or tow the vehicle with defunct plates. Perhaps NY has a
similar program.

We have a wonderful on line DMV that allows registration renewals, with the
emissions tester posting passing results electronically for your vehicle.
No standing in line!

Yeah, that's about what I figured... Well my dad has a truck and trailer
but that's over in Hornell, so the extra cost to drive it might suck out as
much as other thoughts...
I'm wondering what the minimum cost would be to re-register it would be.
Looks like probably $46 for the year even if I only do it for a couple weeks
and then whatever insurance runs on top of that...

Just a pain with trying to sell two cars, buying a new one and trying to
keep only one registered... Especially now that this one needs to get fixed
and it's not registered...

Most states won't allow anything to be towed with wheels on the ground
without tags. On a trailer , you're OK . In NY I bet it's cheaper to
rent a trailer than to call a tow truck ( after an experience with NY
tow truck rates a few years ago...OUCH!

Re: [MBZ] Legality of towing unregistered car in NY?

2007-08-02 Thread LarryT
IMO, the thing the state os trying to do when requiring plates on all
vehicles - even short erm tow vehicles, is to make sure they have insurance
on them. All in all a good thing should I get hit by one. ;-)

But a PITA when *I* need to move a vehicle. When I bought my 911 I drove 80
mi to look at it and it if it was as described and I ended up driving it
back.

The PO let me keep the tags and I mailed them to him as soon as I got home.
Also, I called my insurance man (State Farm) and told him what I might be
doing - he said to call him with the VIN within 30 days - and I'd be covered
from that point (when I bought it) to the end of 30 days.

Technically, I suspect I was doing something illegal - driving my car with
someone elses tags (PO) - but being insured was my biggest concern.

All states are different I believe -

Most states won't allow anything to be towed with wheels on the ground
without tags. On a trailer , you're OK . In NY I bet it's cheaper to
rent a trailer than to call a tow truck ( after an experience with NY
tow truck rates a few years ago...OUCH!

Maybe on the someone else's plates part, but you don't even need to have
plates for a certain amount of time after you've bought the car. In MS
you have seven days to license the vehicle after a purchase. I drove my
300D 2.5T from Ohio to MS and didn't have any problems... While in MS I
got pulled over and showed the bill of sale (the title in this case)
which said I had purchased the car the day before. Officer told me to
have a nice day :)

I think the same is also true for insurance. You have some minimum time
where you're covered without actually having paid for it yet. So long
as you already have an insured vehicle ;)

If it will run and drive you can put insurance on it and buy a paper tag
for 10 bucks.

Do you folks have repair plates? Around here the garages usually have a
repair plate that can be used to
transport a vehicle to the garage. The garage will usually lend you the
plate in order to get the vehicle in.

Some places also will sell you a one day permit to move a vehicle. I know
you can get one here to move a vehicle to
another province. Don't know if you can get one to move a vehicle within
the province. Would probably have to have
a current safety certificate to do that in any event.

Another option is to get a tow truck. It will be cheaper in the long run
than a ticket or an accident if you get
caught or if things go wrong. I had a Jeep towed home for my younger son a
month or so ago and and it cost $70 for
a tow of 5 miles or so. I was tempted to tow it behind one of our trucks
but also thought it would cost more than
the tow to replace the back bumper on the truck if the Jeep happened to
 bump me.

I have towed with just a rope. I towed a friend about 35 miles. He had a
mid 80's full size Cadillac with an
engine knock. He kept the motor running to provide power steering and
brakes and I towed him with my old Chevy
pickup. It was pretty smooth. You really want to be able to trust the
other driver no matter whether you are in the
tow vehicle or the towed vehicle.

Also towed a Chevy pickup home from about 50 miles away on a 1/2 nylon
rope behind a Ford pickup many years ago.
No real problem. I drove the tow vehicle and my father steered the towed
vehicle. I don't think he trusted me to
not hit him from behind. I was pretty young then and he just instructed me
to keep the speed down to about 40 mph
and let him worry about not running into the back of me. It was pretty
hilly country and we slowed a bit going up
hills but there was not much traffic and we got home fine.

Re: [MBZ] Legality of towing unregistered car in NY?

2007-08-02 Thread Curt Raymond

I just want to point out if anybody ever comes through the people's republic of
MA NONE of this fine stuff will fly.
In MA the state says if all 4 wheels are on the ground you WILL have current
tags, you WILL have current insurance or you WILL get in deep doo doo.
Paper tags are not legal and that includes those issued in other states.

In actual fact State Troopers will almost never hassle you over something so
piddling, I drove for 8 months with no inspection sticker, my inspection was
current, I'd had the windshield replaced and forgot about it.

A friend drove his brand new car into MA from NH and got hassled by a small
town cop for having a paper tag.

Another note, in Maine you have to PROVE insurance which means you have to have
a slip of paper from your insurance company every 6 months proving you're
current...

Huh?

few years ago I drove from FL to CA with a transit paper plate from FL.

Also from Utah to CA with a transit Utah paper plate.

Last month my CDI arrived from AZ with a paper plate.

Never hassled me down at the DMV. In fact, they gave me credit for the
amount of time I still had on the paper plates from the other States when I
went to register the cars.

New cars in CA all have paper plates until the regular plates arrive.
