Re: [MBZ] Lost Titles

2015-04-05 Thread Curt Raymond
I go through lost bill of sale issues with snowmobiles a lot. I'm a klutz with
them I guess. My dad has sold me every snowmobile I've ever registered.
Interestingly this year the bill of sale didn't magically reappear just after I
registered the machine, the other two did and immediately got corralled in the
snowmobile stuff folder.

Ouch.

Maybe there are cheaper places but I didn't see any.

Ouch is right!  I shoulda got my 240D title right away when I bought
it.  I looked about a year ago and it was $400-500 then.  I have the
car roadworthy now except the title, and I lost the bill of sale...

Does anyone know of a relatively painless way to get a title for a
vehicle?

Highly State-dependent. In WA, the total cost (for an abandoned car,
the

Frankenheap) was the price of a certified delivery State form letter to
the last owner of record. (I filled it out, and mailed it.) It
bounced,
which was the best possible outcome. I took that, _unopened_, along
with

my bill of sale to the licensing agent. That's all it took, plus the
usual tax and fees for any car sale. In this case (10yo CA plates)
there was an out-of-State inspection/fee, which is mostly checking
VIN numbers. $50, at that time.

I wasn't about to spend serious money washing a title for
that $100 car!

I recommend that you go make friends with someone at a high-volume car
dealer. They have these issues all the time and a good dealer will have a

Each state is different. In general, you get a bill of sale, and a
preferably notarized statement from the seller describing the situation, take
those in, then make an appointment for Johhny law to come look at the

they will do the basic safety inspection.

 3. For a few hundred, companies in AL will get you an Al title. This is best
for high value cars and /or where the state ransom for back registration and
penalties are significantly higher. Like if you found a 63 corvette in a
 barn.

Here, if a car was stored 50 years without registration, you'd owe thousands
in fees and penalties. The solution is to transfer the title out of state.
Once it is titled in another state, the title can be transferred back in
state and you only have to pay for the title transfer and current plate.
