After 40 years of patching mufflers, wrapping with two layers of metal (preferably galvanized) which has been bedded with muffler patching goo from FLAPS, and secured with four clamps evenly spaced; is the longest lasting patch I've found. If there isn't enough room on the pipe, then it goes to an independent muffler shop. The chains usually waste ones time and/or money by trying to sell new parts. Silicon o-rings are good to 400-500F and might just work. Long term I have no doubt that welding would last longer. Harbor Freight has a flux-core wire welder for $100. Don't buy flux wire until you need it. It goes stale. You will pay more for it at a gas supplier or welding store, but the good stuff can make all the difference. -Dave Walton On Sep 8, 2012, at 9:34 AM, Tim C bb...@crone.us wrote: On Sep 8, 2012 8:24 AM, Max Dillon meadedillonmeadedil...@bellsouth.net @ meadedil...@bellsouth.netbellsouth.net meadedil...@bellsouth.net wrote: Anyone have a recommendation for a product to fill in an exhaust pipe diameter mis-match? Would JB Weld be a good choice? I don't think jbw likes vibration, unfortunately I don't have any better suggestions. Maybe get some rubber mounting donuts and see if you can get them into the pipe? (Or donuts plus a slightly bigger pipe?) LCDR Meade M. Dillon, USN, Retired!!! Congratulations! Thanks Tim, and the retirement was actually official back on the first of this month. Rich, i like that idea, could make wider than necessary and hose-clamp in place until the too-big pipe is slid over it. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '95 E300 '87 300TD Rich Thomas richthomas79td...@constructivity.net wrote: cut some metal to roll into a shim. --R On 9/8/12 8:24 AM, Max Dillon wrote: Anyone have a recommendation for a product to fill in an exhaust pipe diameter mis-match? Muffler clamps and a couple relief cuts will not clamp it down tight enough to eliminate the leaks. Very respectfully, /s/ LCDR Meade M. Re: [MBZ] Muffler Patch Methods?
Just cut down a bit of pipe the same size as the bigger one, with a cutout to let it squeeze tightly over the smaller one, then slide the bigger one over it (assuming of course there is room between the two, otherwise you might need some thinner shim stock) --R (who has successfully used this technique on a variety of bodgejobs over the years) On 9/8/12 11:15 AM, Max Dillon wrote: Rich, i like that idea, could make wider than necessary and hose-clamp in place until the too-big pipe is slid over it. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Used generic FLAPS pipe with various scraps to make up the difference. (Metric vs. standard thicknesses and diameters are an issue if you go this route.) I welded the whole mess together once I had it all assembled to my liking, though.
