Re: [MBZ] Need front brake rotors for my W123 300TD
I’ve known Randy since 1989 when he had a storefront operation in Santa Barbara. Good guy, a real bulldog when it comes to finding a part that’s obscure or difficult to identify. I used to visit him when I traveled out there, usually without notice. I would just wander into the store like any customer and walk up to the counter, asking him for parts for (my) a 1979 300TD. The first time I did it he just about lost it when he saw the name on my credit card. Hee. I paid his way to Startech in the early 2000s when it was in Milwaukee. I also contributed heavily to his daughter’s college fund through my parts purchases. Randy is a really good honest businessman who does well for his customers. The Internet killed his business, however. Too much competition on price. However, he continues to amass all the NOS parts he can get his hands on. He buys up inventories, dealer stock that’s too old to rotate back to MBUSA, you name it. He keeps it all in a warehouse in Goleta outside Santa Barbara and pretty much works via email to the best of my knowledge. I would buy from him now if he sold current parts. Your choice. The darn things are heavy and costly to ship. Last time I did this job, genuine MBZ disks were surprisingly inexpensive (like $50 each). I usually re-bolt the wheel to the hub (just 2-3 bolts) to hold the hub while I loosen and tighten the bolts that hold the disk to the hub (and I blue-Loctite those bolts). -Original Message- From: Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2015 11:25 AM My local dealer will happily charge 4X what I would pay at Autohaus AZ, less a 10 percent MB Club discount. Re: [MBZ] Need front brake rotors for my W123 300TD
Pads are a wear item, rotors are too but you should IIRC get 1 set of rotors for each 2 sets of pads. Maybe more. I put PBR rotors on my '83 240D, I got them from Rusty and Gary while told me they were junk and would wear out tomorrow (this was after the Rusty/Gary split) they gave good service over 25,000 miles until I junked the car. IIRC they were very cheap. Dr. Fatstuff has both Balo and Zimmerman in the sub$35 range for fronts, probably can't go wrong with either. For pads I'm sticking to Pagid from now on. My local CarQuest talked me into their house brand for my 190D rear brakes last time. I bought the best quality and they squeaked bad. Switched to Pagid which is what Gary recommended and the squeak went away. The CarQuest branded pads were like $8, Pagid were maybe $20. In this case since I had to do the job twice it would have made much better sense to go with Pagid in the first place. -Curt From: Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Cc: Andrew Strasfogel astrasfo...@gmail.com Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2015 10:02 AM Subject: [MBZ] Need front brake rotors for my W123 300TD What brand should I stay away from? Re: [MBZ] Need front brake rotors for my W123 300TD
The only way you can be sure to get good quality parts if you're worried about it is to get them from a dealer, period. The stuff you buy from AutohausAZ sits on the shelf with loads of URO brand parts. If they're willing to sell that garbage, they can't be motivated to sell you the highest quality parts - they're more interested in profits, which the cheapest and poorest quality will give them. Hence their motivation to push the cheap stuff. I know of several instances where people have confronted rapist dealers and in a couple of them the dealer backed down and sold for MB list, as opposed to consumer list, i.e., the 4X markup you reference. There have got to be multiple dealers in your area, although I'm sure not all are close to you. If you confront them on pricing, tell them you'll just go to the other dealer. That won't sit well, as they are a competitor in this case. The alternative is to find a good dealer parts guy, explain your parts buying habits and tell them you would prefer to buy from them. Ask them to go to their boss for approval. You might be surprised. BTDT, Dan. Autohaus sells the OEM rear rotors for $51 but not the front. Local dealer has a discounted price of $63.30 each, with a valid MB Club card (mine has expired). I asked for a better deal but he won't budge. Re: [MBZ] Need front brake rotors for my W123 300TD
If you’re sure they’re OE and you can get them cheaper, do it! However, I’m a bit confused about your earlier statement about your dealer raping you or charging 4X list, as that’s not what you just described. If shipping is free with Autohauz and you’re willing to wait, it makes sense. You probably don’t pay them sales tax, either. On the other hand, if you want them now and they’re only $12 more apiece, what’s the big deal? I’m seeing a dealer price of around $48.50 for the fronts from most dealers. Rears around $56. Still cheaper than crappy unknown aftermarket discs whose origins are unknown. I’m sorry, guys, I understand being frugal, but in the grand scheme of things to me this is nickel-dime stuff. Yeah, ten bucks more times two or four is a lot, but you KNOW what you’re getting. Just my $0.02. Dan On Jun 11, 2015, at 1:08 PM, Andrew Strasfogel astrasfo...@gmail.com wrote: BTDT, Dan. Dan, your word is gold so I am going to move up to OEM rotors. Pelican Parts sells OEM front rotors for under $50 - including free shipping Autohaus doesn't carry them. Northlake Motors doesn't answer the phone and hasn't returned my voicemail message. I also need the window brushes (L and R) that scrape dew/rain water off the windows. OEM costs $75 vs. $12 for a knockoff. Seems like quite a spread. Is itworth the difference? Re: [MBZ] Need front brake rotors for my W123 300TD
Window scrapers are actually material sold in bulk. Let’s give this some rational thought: Knockoff: $12.00 OEM: $75.00 That means the knockoff is more than SIX times cheaper than OEM. Assuming everyone is making a profit on what they sell, the cost relationship of the knockoff to the OEM part is skewed even further. What do you think about the raw materials that are being used in the knockoff? Cheap labor? Sure. 100% real rubber? Most unlikely. How long do you think the knockoff is going to last? I realize that some will step up at this point and suggest that Andrew can buy more than six pieces of the knockoff before he would have the same amount of money invested for one OEM window scraper, but you also need to factor in labor and related potential issues for the water that’s going to get past the knockoff part and into his doors as it wears (quickly). Here’s what I suggest: Contact Randy Steele at EPS, Ltd. epspa...@impulse.net Tell Randy I told you to contact him. Tell him you need exterior window scrapers for a W123 and see what he quotes you. I suggest this because I bought literally tens of thousands of dollars of parts from Randy over the years, and I am almost sure he bought window scraper material in bulk and just cut it to length. For that matter, the pieces you get from the dealer will also be in bulk form, slightly longer than your actual scrapers. You’ll need to have some very sharp tin snips or aircraft shears to trim it to length. I don’t know if Randy will be any cheaper, but it’s worth a try. I certainly understand your reluctance to spend $75 for a window scraper, but some of that decision factors into how much longer you plan on owning/driving the car, too. On a related note, Randy pretty much deals in NOS stuff now, so if you’re looking for an NOS part for an older Benz, he’s your guy. My house would cost 10X more even if it did have chinee drywall. That might even be a good selling feature, to celebrate diversity and all... But I think we are both arguing the same point, NOS is new OLD stock which has been sitting on some shelf for who knows how long, and rubber deteriorates, but maybe it would still be better and last longer than cheepcheepchinee rubber since it might be der in ordnung Deutsche rubber. I myself would not use cheepcheepchinee rubbers for fear of the consequences. --R On 6/11/15 2:10 PM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote: For all I know, the $12 scraper has NEW rubber, albeit of lower quality than the OEM part.
