[MBZ] New car New questions
Okay, now that I am happily home with the new-to-us 87 190D (and have my computer set up so I can email now) I naturally could use some input on some questions - the impatient may delete. Is the sunroof not supposed to open all the way on these smaller cars? It slides back but looks like it should open about 6 or 7 inches more. Is that all the farther it's supposed to open? The transmission dipstick: It says 126 on the top of it (followed by other numbers of course) The cap is red in color. Was a mystery before I realized it probably is the wrong dipstick - the level read way low, yet the tranny acted just right. The seller tried to explain this away in lame fashion, saying that when the engine is cold, and engine is shut off, that that is when the level should read correctly (which it does). Fortunately, there was the operator's manual present in the glovebox, and I was able to prove him wrong in black and white. He insisted on holding that he was correct though. I added one pint to be conservative (before I realized that I may have the wrong dipstick. So do you have evidence to support the reverse situation? One would think a fellow with a normally aspirated MB diesel does not exhibit a need to compensate for other shortages in life?? Brian I looked up your car in the EPC to get the part numbers. Too little or too much oil in a motor is never a good thing. I'd try to get the right dipstick soon. Thanks James. But I am talking about the tranny dipstick. It's disturbing to hear that I could in fact have the correct dipstick in there, as I have been running the thing quite low if that is the case. My road trip from So. CA to Seattle surely has not helped things. Again, my tranny dipstick does read 126 as the first digits of the number on the red cap. I was hoping that I had the dipstick from a 126 chassis in there or something. The thing shifts quite nicely though - no maladies. Wonder if I need to add fluid or not?!? That is the correct dipstick. It can be low and still shift fine. Okay, now: With the climate control switched to off (the "zero" button depressed) my fan started running on its own just this afternoon. Would run for a bit, then shut off for a second or two, then start running again. I took it for some neat feature of the ACC that adjusts for the cabin temperature getting too hot. But I suspect it could be a malfunction, because I have the thing turned off! What say all? ALSO: What could cause the fuse to repeatedly blow that controls the gauge cluster (fuel, oil press. and temp?) My ACC has done that - it was the push button unit it's self. You take it out, take it apart, and re-solder the switch connections and clean the switches with Deoxit. I think there's a write up in the list archives. Actually, there is more to it than that. It's not the switches you resolder, but the connections between the main board and the boards mounted on the sides. When these were manufactured, they relied on solder to provide both an electrical and physical connection between the main board on the bottom and two smaller boards on each side, mounted at right angles to the main board. The solder ages, flexes from temperature, humidity and physical shock, and the joints fail. Unless you use a magnifier you'll almost never see them - they are hairline cracks that occur and become intermittent connections, making diagnosis nearly impossible. If you reflow the joints about 90% of the ACC units will be as new. It does require a steady hand and someone with plenty of experience soldering PC boards. I also take the opportunity to replace any worn switch buttons (they're easy to remove with a pair of pliers) and put all new bulbs in, too. Not familiar with W201 wiring, but my W116 blows that fuse when I romp hard on the throttle. Reason: a short in the transmission kickdown system, only drawing power when the switch under the throttle pedal clicks on. I had that fuse go on my 190D turned out I'd knocked the wires off the electromagnetic fan clutch. The problem only happened at or around operating temp. Look behind the fan by the oil dipstick tube and you should see to wires plugged onto little round whatsis. Now that's a solution I would be capable of carrying out. I'll check that. I do appreciate the other responses too, I'm just a wussy when it comes to tearing into cars. In fact I have finally been forced into replacing the starter on my 240D (yes the same one I asked about weeks ago - it did quit in me a couple times on my cross-country trip - one time on the ferry - but thankfully, a little tapping and praying got me on my way). Well, per Kaleb's assurance, I'm adding tranny fluid pint by pint. That stupid fluid level has yet to climb above the bottom part where it's curled. Wonder why it's so very low?! Yes, I know, cause it just is. ALSO: the seller brought me a quart of "Lubro Moly ATF III". I've been adding regular old Mercon/Dexron III that I got from the Shell station. Can I mix it? If you don't know what is in the tranny, or how old it is, I'd suggest you drain it all out, change the filter, and refill with M1 ATF. Yes, I agree - I don't know when I'll have time though - crazy times. I just added another pint and now at least the thing reads on the stick. Seems to be about 1 1/2 quarts low - that is is the distance between the top line and the bottom line is one pint, and if it reads accordingly all the way down the stick.
