[MBZ] ODBII & MB Diagnostic Connector
Just for grins I ordered an adapter that allows the connection of an ODBII reader to the 38 pin diagnostic connector on my S500, which is one year prior to the adoption of ODBII. I can't seem to find anything that describes what I should be able to see on the reader when I connect it to the car. For $3.00 I'm willing to risk a try, just curious as to if anyone else has ever used one of these. Re: [MBZ] ODBII & MB Diagnostic Connector
Try OBDII Why would you expect to see anything with an OBD reader if the car is not putting out anything an OBD reader could understand? (Not being a smartass, just seems like the basic question) Is there an adapter that might go to USB and something running on a laptop that could understand whatever the car is talking? I built some little circuit thing to see the ALDL output from my 87 Chebbie truck on a laptop, and ran some software some guy in Sweden or somewhere wrote, it actually was kinda cool to see the various parameters but ultimately worthless for adjusting anything on the truck. --R On 2/15/13 1:13 PM, Dan Penoff wrote: Just for grins I ordered an adapter that allows the connection of an ODBII reader to the 38 pin diagnostic connector on my S500, which is one year prior to the adoption of ODBII. Re: [MBZ] ODBII & MB Diagnostic Connector
>From what I have been able to discover, there are some signals present at the >38 pin connector that can be read by the ODBII reader, but they are limited. I have seen the LED readers that you can build to read the DTC codes from the connector, but haven't had a chance to try one. There is a possibility that my car has an ODBII connector, as MB was transitioning to this during the 95 model year to be in full compliance by MY 96 when it was required. Never looked for a connector since I thought the car was too old to have one. I'll be checking for it this weekend. Actually, just SDS will work, Xentry is kinda overkill. If you buy an eBay multiplexer, buy one with two round connectors on the brick; they may be "3rd shift" versions from the same factory that makes/made the original ones. Avoid the ones that have a RS-232 on the MUX directly. You will also want a ThinkPad T30... Although you can use a Baum CS2000/iScan D90 for some of the more mundane stuff... BTW, my E300's have both the OBDII and the OBD connector, and if I am not mistaken, when you have both, you should use the 38 pin round connector. -- John W Reames jream...@verizon.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Feb 20, 2013, at 17:56, "Kaleb C. I would take exception to that. Any 1996 and later car sold in the US had to have ODBII. I just looked at a 96 S600 that was at the local dealer yesterday and it had the connector right by the parking brake pedal. And they wanted an exorbitant amount of money for the car, too. Re: [MBZ] ODBII & MB Diagnostic Connector
Well, you're right; I can't say I've done any serious digging/disassembly under the driver's side footwell, but anytime I've pulled codes it's always been through the diagnostic port under the hood on that car. If there is one, it's got to be buried in there, because it's definitely not mounted out in the open where it should be. Your C140 was manufactured in March, IIRC, so maybe it missed the OBDII. How are things going with it otherwise? If you have any questions, feel free to ask; hopefully I can be of some help. -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Dan Penoff Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2013 10:58 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] ODBII & MB Diagnostic Connector I haven't looked - did you ever look for one? Re: [MBZ] ODBII & MB Diagnostic Connector
Our local indy has the scanner/computer at his shop, so it was never a problem to pull codes. Though I've heard of people successfully pulling codes from homemade readers, they are usually just about as helpful as an OBDII code: enough to point you in the right direction, but far from specifically diagnosing the problem. Also, there are supposedly different 'banks' of codes, so to speak, held in different control modules and the homemade readers can only read one 'bank' (module). For detailed information/codes regarding modules other than the diagnostic module, the proper scanner and diagnostic connector is required. I would be cautious using any kind of homemade reader, or any other 'cheap' reader for that matter, as all of the car's control modules are right there connected to the CAN bus. One plug in of a faulty scanner may be all it takes to zap all of the control modules ($$$ to replace at $1,500+ a piece from the dealership). There is a great website that I like to visit now and again by an S500 coupe enthusiast who goes by his (what I assume to be) Ham Radio handle of K6JRF. The website can be found here: http://www.k6jrf.com/MB_S500.html He has a lot of great articles regarding engine maintenance, diagnostic test procedures, repair articles, etc. on the C140. It's a great start for someone who is new to the C140, but it's nowhere close to being a sufficient replacement for WIS. He's even got the DTC codes you seek, in addition to instructions on how to make your own scanner. Hope this helps and please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. I would like to find one of the scanners that would read my car's DTCs. Looks like there are a number of different ones out there. I like the smaller hand held ones as opposed to the beasts like the SnapOn MT2500, plus you need to purchase all sorts of keys and "personality modules" for it to work. Any suggestions for sources other than the obvious, like eBay? So one of them has 137 years experience and the other three have one year each! And this makes me wonder - can a mechanic tally "book hours" to accumulate experience? 2000 book hours = one years? -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

He's even got the DTC codes you seek, in addition to instructions on how to make your own scanner. Hope this helps and please feel free to ask any other questions you may have.
