Definitely an 88. I bought it the year I moved to WI, which was 88. October
or November, as I got it shortly before Thanksgiving. The deer strike was on
our trip back to Indianapolis for Thanksgiving….

Mounting location can be important to make them work well. Hard
to tell as the sound is ultrasonic to humans.

It was those that inspired me to try using the car horn.

My carbed version wasn't bad on the highway either. However, as the
transmission got old it required effort to keep it in overdrive. When it
dropped into 3rd the rpm rose and the mileage dropped. Also noisy and rougher
at 3K plus rpm. In 4th around 2K rpm. Had to be very light on the gas pedal or
it would shift down and proved difficult to get it back into 4th at higher
speeds.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Compost from road kill (Mitch Haley)

2018-12-09 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I had an 87 Blazer I loved but it rusted out in the rear after I moved
to Houston from Boston area and the rear tailgate would no longer open.
I had put a new engine in it, which I pulled along with the tranny and
have in the garage, and gave the hulk to some guy I knew who was into
cars.  Engine had the TBI which was somewhat problematic toward the
end.  I found some app a guy in Finland or somewhere had made to run on
XP, along with a little circuit he designed you could tap into the ALDI
(I think that is what it was called) and read engine data in real time
on a laptop.  I did that a few times, it was kinda interesting, but
reprogramming the computer was a very involved thing.  A newer 4bbl or a
controllable throttle body injection system would probably be the thing
to do if I ever do something with the engine.  As I recall it would get
about 17 on the highway, about what the 96 Silverado and 2000 Suburban
get.  Not a lot of progress in that aspect.

The 88 had throttle body injection, so it was actually pretty good on fuel,
especially on the highway.

I drove an 86 Silverado Suburban for almost 10 years. Red with the cream stripe
around the middle. 2WD, barn doors, 3rd seat etc. Rear air caused trouble. Salt
ate the pipes underneath twice. 350 4 barrel was great. OD auto not so good.
Rebuilt once and needed to be done again by 200 K miles when I sold it.

1988, I believe.  Bought it new, I think it was around $16k.

Beats me. Just a base model 1988 Suburban. You couldn’t get much more basic
than this one. They thought I was nuts because I didn’t care that it didn’t
have a radio.

I sold it a couple years later and actually made money on it. That was when I
started with my 300TD.

It has been crazy season around here lately with the boy deers chasing the girl
deers and other boy deers to get them away from the girl deers they lust after,
and paying NO attention to anything else, esp cars on the roads. I drive the
2-lane country roads on this island and at night one has to be especially
careful as there will be multiples running across chasing or being chased. So
far so good for me but there are plenty around to keep the clean-up crews
well-fed.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Compost from road kill (Mitch Haley)

2018-12-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The one I hit with the Suburban I didn’t kill. I was going down I-43 just
south of Sheboygan, WI when it started to run into the road. I was driving at
highway speed and my youngster was in the cargo area unsecured, so I slowed
down as quickly as I could in order to not make him become airborne. The deer
lost it’s footing on the hard surfaced road, and instead of ending up directly
in front of me, got hit in the head by my passenger side mirror.

That spun it around so that it slammed into the passenger side (front) door
parallel to the truck, after which it bounced into the road behind me. An
elderly couple in a Buick then hit it head on, causing it to fly over their car
and land on the shoulder of the road.

I pulled over immediately, saw Old People were OK but stunned, then noticed the
two kids in the Chrysler K-car pull over, get out, grab the deer carcass by the
legs and toss it into their trunk, then drive off. At that point I was calling
the sheriff to get an accident report filed so I had something to turn into my
insurance company.

Ironically, this was an area where there were cornfields on both sides of the
interstate, and deer were quite common in the area as they were out in the
fields eating the corn stubble. The wife drove through it daily during her
commute, and never once encountered a deer. Needless to say she gave me a lot
of crap about this….

probably sell the 83 300D and at some point have some repairs made to the 80

As to deer, just a suggestion.  I grew up and learned to drive "up North" and
currently drive in the South.  When learning up North, the main issue was to
constantly scan the sides of the road, peripheral vision is a real benefit.
Now I continue to do the same in the South.  I've been lucky having driven for
over 50 years and never hit a deer.  I just hope to stay lucky.

Using the horn is a bad idea with moose. They take it as a challenge and will
charge the vehicle.

That is the first step.

Then, the most effective reaction is to sound the horn.  And not a
polite "toot, toot" but push the button and keep pushing until the
risk is over.

At the same time, slow down.  And don't keep watching the deer you
spotted.  Very often there are more around and any that you see
you have already seen and the _unseen_ ones are the most
surprising.

This is based on many, many miles of driving in rural deer
country.  So while I have impacted many deer,  the one that got
this wagon is the only contact in the last decade or so that I
have used the horn.  There have been at least a dozen situations
that could have easily included impact.  Of course, I can't say
what would have really happened.

In urban and suburban, the horn sounding may be an issue.  Use at
your own risk. *smiles*

Marquetry (also spelled as marqueterie; from the French marqueter,
to varigate) is the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to
a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or pictures. The
technique may be applied to case furniture or even seat furniture,
to decorative small objects with smooth, veneerable surfaces or to
freestanding pictorial panels appreciated in their own right.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Compost from road kill (Mitch Haley)

2018-12-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Roger,

I thought your 300SD was pretty much a daily driver? Is that not the case?

I’m a little curious about something, as I was thinking about you the other day.

There’s a high end resale furniture shop that I frequent here, since I used to
build custom furniture when I had the space and equipment to do so. I like to
go in and look over the pieces they take in, which are sometimes very unusual
and unique pieces from estates and other such sources. I deeply appreciate the
fine work that went into creating these sorts of things, and I really enjoy
looking at them in detail to see how the builder made certain joints or applied
marquetry to enhance a part of the design.

While I was speaking with one of the owners as I walked through the store with
them, they were bemoaning the fact that furniture such as china cabinets and
sideboards were falling by the wayside and starting to disappear from a lot of
furniture builder’s catalogs. They seem to think that the current generations
no longer place any value on such legacy possessions such as the family silver
or china, or have any desire to own furniture such as this. They say that more
often than not, younger clients are coming in and buying dining room furniture
and leaving the china cabinets behind.

Since you deal in china, I was wondering if you are seeing a similar decrease
in interest in such things?

On a related note, I was just looking at our family silver that was handed down
to me. We use it when we have family gatherings or guests, but I can see why
others might not place a lot of value on such things. For that matter, I was
also looking at the tea service I gave the wife for an anniversary gift many,
many years ago. It has almost no value on the market these days - not that we
would ever sell it.

Sorry Mitch, but I didn't tag you to this thread. I merely started it as
somewhat sad and humorous regarding some of the topics that arise. Similar to
the other list where they get off on topics like wine tasting, cheese
favorites, etc. Sometimes you think you are on one of the cooking networks. I
realize we are all getting older so there isn't a lot of MB work, etc. to
discuss. As to me, my 80 and 83 and currently sitting for awhile. I will
probably sell the 83 300D and at some point have some repairs made to the 80
300SD and put it back on the road.

Best Wishes,

Roger

2018-12-08 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Well, since Roger tagged me to this thread...

I have a W163 that had been sitting for a few weeks.
The previous owner sold it to State Farm after pasting a deer with the left
front corner.
I have no idea what happened to the venison.
I replaced the radiator, headlight, hood/grille, and fender. Still need to
replace the fog light, and the front bumper cover has cracks in it, but the
cracks are no longer stuffed with deer hair.
This weekend's projects include replacing 12 spark plugs and changing the oil.

Functional, is more important than appearance.

Too bad more of us don't have Dimitri's talent!

I have a wagon that has been sitting for a few years. It was
taken out of active duty after a high-energy impact with a deer.
