It's just like hunters. The ones who merely go through a hunter safety course
because it's required, or the cops who only know about guns what was force fed
to them at the range, aren't all that competent with firearms. The cops who
know how to properly handle firearms already knew before they became cops.

A woman I went to high school with, her teenage son killed her husband. They'd
been hunting and the kid was unloading his gun. How in the world do you point a
gun at your dad's chest, especially when manipulating that gun's controls? If I
had pointed a toy gun at my dad at half that kid's age, I would have lost
access to it for at least a month.

If you're raised like I was, you just don't allow the dangerous end of a
firearm to sweep over other people unless you think they might need to be dead.
That's the 'gun culture' that some people in this country are determined to get
rid of.

Some LEOs (a clear majority in major cities), are as safe with a gun in public
as I'd be if you gave me a two day familiarization course with elephants and
asked me to drive one through town. These are guys who didn't even have BB guns
when they were kids, and it's hard to get them to the point where doing it
right is an ingrained response.

That cop from Wyoming in the Youtube video I linked, he seemed to have the
basics down, I can't fault the way he handled his sidearm in front of the news
camera, but he bought a dangerously stupid piece of equipment that didn't
protect the trigger, and then he grabbed his gun through the fabric of his
pants and pulled up on the trigger. Boom, negligent discharge, here's your
citation for disorderly conduct and public endangerment. Your Lee Paige
Achievement Certificate will come in the mail later. (or, since he wasn't using
a proper holster, should we give him a Plaxico Burress Award?)

The dancing FBI agent who was mentioned in passing in that video, his holster
didn't have sufficient retention to hold the gun securely while doing a
backflip. That's a problem, but the real problem was the moron who, upon seeing
that his holster dumped his gun on the floor, grabbed it and pulled the
trigger. He didn't make the common mistake of grabbing a dropped gun in midair,
but the end result was the same. I think he was rushing to get it out of sight
before anybody noticed he dropped it.

Notice the guy on the right getting ready to shoot, and the RSO has to make him
stop and don eye and hearing protection?

There's no discernible recoil involved in firing those shotguns.
Could they be training with blanks?
Brazilian cops run the full range of skill, just like ours.
You'll see videos of Lee Paige stupidity, then you'll see a video where one of
them puts an assailant down with two fast and well aimed shots.

Yeahbut, a good range (a safe range) won't have any combustible materials
forward of the line, most ranges I've shot at had a sand floor.

The output of those guns seems weird, that long slow flash. I suspect they're
shooting some sort of incendiary round, obviously not intended for indoor
shooting.

Its long been my contention that the people least safe with firearms are law
enforcement officials. This does nothing to change that attitude...

As usual my dad and I spent black Friday at the range. This was my first
opportunity to shoot last year's Christmas present:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4874/45152868525_9d850493b0_b.jpg
Swedish made Remington rolling block in 8x58r, the round is often called the
"Danish Kraig". Its quite powerful, in the 30-06 class. Originally a black
powder gun they were converted to smokeless, mine is dated 1892 for the
conversion. Dad has been playing with loads, it was working pretty well with a
220gr jacketed bullet. I need more time shooting it, I rough at best.
I also shot my Mossberg 500 with the slug barrel to get ready for deer season.
If all goes as planned (blah) I'll get 2 days of shotgun
season.https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4856/32193409368_72deeba77b_b.jpg
The lower bulls are where I started sighting in, I'm reasonably happy with it
considering its got a shotgun trigger...
Dad brought out his 25-20, the scope is reproduction but period. He shoots
really well with it, I can barely make it hit the ground:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4864/32193405758_f0a4fe9d05_b.jpg
Finally I dialed in my black powder deer gun, I'll only get 2 days of shotgun
season but should have 5 or 6 of black powder season:
https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1754/27872740887_471c6a931d_b.jpgThis was only
the second time I've gotten to shoot it since I bought it in February, it took
a long time to work up a good load, finally settled on .530 roundball, 50gr of
black powder with a .010 greased patch. Oiled patches blew out and didn't
impart good spin to the ball, .015 patches were too thick to load. I'm really
pleased with the result.

Re: [MBZ] OT: The best way to spend black Friday

2018-11-29 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I wouldn't mind an AR pistol for home defense, but I would rather pay $400 for
it than pay $2000.
I've been thinking about building a set of 3 ARs, with a budget of around $1500
for all.
A 10-12" pistol for home security.
A 16" carbine for all around use.
A 26" AR-10 for when you want to reach out and smack something from more than
half a mile away.

9mm ARs are a bit more expensive than 5.56 NATO or 300 Blackout, but I could
build one with both pistol length and carbine length uppers for about $700.

That is a Savage Model 24. They are indeed the harvester. If you can
find a Lyman Model 53D peep sight, the accuracy is phenomenal for open
sights. It does not interfere with using it as a shotgun.
Unfortunately it is no longer in production. 22 mag/20 was quite
popular. See Savage24.com

Dad has a break action .22/.410 depending on the barrel. They're both
quite useful but the .410 has shot a lot of squirrels, porcupines,
rabbits, partridge, etc. We call it the "Harvester". His is a youth
model so its very small, came with a cloth sleeve it carries in,
broken down in the case its probably 18"x5"x3", maybe 3#. They make
some other barrels, if you swapped out the .22 for a .44mag you'd be
good for deer sized game as long as you kept the range down to 100
yards or less. The .410 should be good for that too but it doesn't
have sights...

Right - he also bought three rotary magazines. My Ruger American bolt
action 22 uses the same magazines, as does the 10/22. You can have 40
rounds in four rotary mags that take up the same space as that banana clip!

2018-11-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
They're more expensive than a 12ga for sure but remember its a single shot
break action, you're not firing 100 a year. I think the last I saw at Wal-Mart
were $15 a box, expensive but still less than a buck a shot. The advantage is
that the gun is small and handy.
Actually as I think of it I've got an old Savage .22/20ga over and under which
also breaks down into a similar carrier. Super handy little gun, the only
downside is the two barrels don't match the sights so you can't really shoot
slugs in the 20ga.

I have a Danish Krag, it is in 6.5 X 55 cal. It's a very unusual action: the
non-removable mag is a door that flips open on the right side of the receiver,
you just dump the loose rounds in.

Subject: [MBZ] OT: The best way to spend black Friday

Finally I dialed in my black powder deer gun, I'll only get 2 days of shotgun
season but should have 5 or 6 of black powder season:

the second time I've gotten to shoot it since I bought it in February, it took
a long time to work up a good load, finally settled on .530 roundball, 50gr of
black powder with a .010 greased patch. Oiled patches blew out and didn't
impart good spin to the ball, .015 patches were too thick to load. I'm really
pleased with the result.

Now I’m jealous. I have lusted after an M1 Garand for a while, but I just
can’t justify the price, even for an tatty one.

So I settle for my (Yugo) SKS.

At least it's a breakdown model, he plans to carry it when he flies over

His thinking was that the Charger is smaller and lighter than a rifle, is
supposed to be accurate to 50 yards, and he thinks it looks cool. He has a
break action over/under 22/.410, but it's fallen into dis-favor since he
got the M1 Garand.

My Marlin 60 is a far simpler rifle and dead-nuts simple as well as amazingly
accurate. I can get a 2” grouping at 50 yards with iron sights, better with a
bench rest and the cheap scope that came with it.

The .410 shells tend to be expensive around here.

Every which way - two hands at the rear, pistol style; two hands, one in
front and one on the pistol grip; bi-pod on the bench, two hands; one hand
out, pistol style. I personally don't like it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: The best way to spend black Friday

2018-11-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Looks like they provide a bipod with it for shooting at the range. Pretty
cheep, too. My local dealer sells the breakdown model for just a little over
$300.

I can understand that a whole lot more than the Sig. You’re essentially paying
$1800 for a tarted-up 9mm pistol, IMHO.

Nice.

I had a whole week to go to the range with my new (to me) Lanber 2099 shotgun.
I never got around to it, unfortunately. When I went a week or two ago for
pistol practice I took it wth me and just ran through four stands, and got 14
out of 16, which I was quite pleased with. My boss finally broke down and
bought a Mossberg 500 or Remington 370, I don’t recall which one, from Dick’s
over Thanksgiving, so he’s chomping at the bit to go out after work, so I’m
sure I’ll get out soon.

Youngest son came home the other day with a Sig MPX-K 9mm. WTF for, I have no
idea. Just don’t get the AR mentality. Want a pistol? Buy a pistol!

Kids these days….

[MBZ] OT: The best way to spend black Friday

The lower bulls are where I started sighting in, I'm reasonably happy with it

Dad brought out his 25-20, the scope is reproduction but period. He shoots
really well with it, I can barely make it hit the ground:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4864/32193405758_f0a4fe9d05_b.jpg
Finally I dialed in my black powder deer gun, I'll only get 2 days of shotgun

the second time I've gotten to shoot it since I bought it in February, it took
a long time to work up a good load, finally settled on .530 roundball, 50gr of
black powder with a .010 greased patch. Oiled patches blew out and didn't
impart good spin to the ball, .015 patches were too thick to load. I'm really
pleased with the result.
