[MBZ] OT weather report
Looks like most of the storminess has gone inland and sparing the vast estate. Have had rain off and on through the day and some tornado warnings but nothing happened. Wind is picking up a bit but nothing too significant yet, trees are dancing but haven’t heard any crashes. No rain now. Looks like it will head offshore not too far north of here. King tide (full moon) is at 9pmish and the wind will be pushing some surge onshore so that might be an issue with the highest tide of the month. So so far this one has not been too significant, so far. So far. Re: [MBZ] OT: Weather
A UTI snuck up on her they reckon and it went to sepsis. Got her afib all wigged out ( heart rate up to 180bpm). Lost pretty much all neurological stuff went south ( didn’t know her name, birthday, how to walk up stairs). Was in hospital for 10 days. Post sepsis, she has no short term memory. Was forgetting how to drive but didn’t realize it until she was behind the wheel trying to exit her trailer park. She is a hot mess now. I can deal with that. The cold doesn’t bother me. I just hate the gloomy stuff. And when it’s sunny and clear up there this time of year, the sky is so blue and intense it’s amazing. The weather guessers claimed it was going to be like 6F last night but its 20F just before 7am so I don't think it got that cold. The ASV doesn't have a clutch on the hydraulic system. The machine is hydro static so the engine just turns a great big hydraulic pump but it has to turn it all the time so when its cold out and all the oil is thick it starts mighty hard... -Curt On Thursday, December 17, 2020, 8:46:38 PM EST, Buggered Benzmail wrote: E cole ow dah! The 220D was in a heated garage - started right up. The Cessna was sitting out, and two of us could not pull the prop through! We ducted the output from a kerosene space heater with a tarp to the front of the cowling and turned on the gasoline powered Southwind heater in the cabin (where the 5 gallon oil tank sits under the instrument panel). A new battery and an hour later it started right up. Yes, the density altitude was very low, though I don't remember what it was. Re: [MBZ] OT weather
I saw a video once where I guy preheated his plane with a Coleman stove. He sat the stove on the ground with a stovepipe to duct the heat up into the engine. I can't imagine it would work if it was very cold though, a single burner hiking stove doesn't have all that much heat output. 5000 BTU at even 0F would be like trying to heat it with your hands... Back when I was trying to start my 240D at -20F I read about Alaskan bush pilots that would drain the oil out of their plane and bring it in the cabin to stay warm overnight. I contemplated the idea and although I expect it would work I ended up with a big battery and an inverter to run the block heater. -Curt From: OK Don via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mitch Haley mi...@mitchellhaley.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tuesday, November 4, 2014 10:59 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT weather The 220D was in a heated garage - started right up. They got 10 inches of snow in Caribou on Sunday. I'm headed up tomorrow and a little nervous about getting in to camp. I'll have to plow snow for 3/4 mile, fortunately the Dodge has good tires. Uhhh, open the valve and light a match? Hang the match under the generator a little if its cold. If its really cold a little fondue fuel on the burner under the generator helps. When I did the cooking challenge a couple years ago I cooked pancakes outside at 16F. Normally I preheat the generator a little with the torch just to make lighting a little easier but at 16F the propane torch wouldn't light. Stove lit right up with a match... At 0F a lantern becomes a bastard to light but thats only because its hard to get at the generator for preheat, gotta take the glass off to get inside. A stove is easier. I guess if I was going to camp a lot in extreme cold I'd attach a little piece of fiberglass stove door gasket material to the top of the primary burner, I could soak that in a little Coleman fuel and light it to preheat easily. -Curt From: Randy Bennell rbenn...@bennell.ca To: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tuesday, November 4, 2014 12:10 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT weather On 04/11/2014 10:08 AM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: I saw a video once where I guy preheated his plane with a Coleman stove. I was a scout leader for a bit when my elder son participated in scouting. We had a head leader (troop scouter?) who was quite adept at things like this. We went sledding one night when it was very cold and he fired the stove up to make hot chocolate for the troop. My recollection is that he soaked a bit of kleenex with fuel and put it on the burner under and around the generator tube and then lit it on fire in order to warm up the generator tube to encourage vapourization of the fuel. Yeah that'd work too. If I were only going to do it once or twice I'd carry a can of fondue fuel (or sterno) but if I were going winter camping for a week I'd rig up a real preheater. Some of the very early stoves from before instant light were invented had a little well that you dripped some fuel into and lit on fire to preheat the generator. My little Optimus 8R can do that too although I prefer to use alcohol for the preheat as its cleaner and doesn't soot things up. -Curt From: Randy Bennell rbenn...@bennell.ca To: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tuesday, November 4, 2014 4:06 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT weather I was a scout leader for a bit when my elder son participated in scouting. Re: [MBZ] OT weather
To put it in technical terms, this was a freak thing. Glad it's over for now! 32.9 F at our house this a.m., but no frost. White Whale was blowing hot air after about two blocks of driving, but I wore a pair of army flight gloves for most of my commute because the steering wheel was quite cold. Re: [MBZ] OT weather
Having lived in the South (TN) for 8 years i get it that 32 is cold. But as a northeasterner I have started a Subaru @ -29F. Mercedes content. I once started my 79 0240D @ 4F using the Curt triple glow crank hope method- crank till it either starts or battery dies. My OM 602 has a block heater but I don't use it. Have fired that one off @ 10F with single glow. Marshall used to say that a cold weather start was a compression test. Re: [MBZ] OT weather
Since we're telling cold stories . . . We flew the Cessna 195 to MN to visit my grandparents over the Christmas holidays. When it ws time to leave, Granddad started the 220D and drove us to the airport where we had to start the Jacobs R755 (with straight 50 wt. oil) - at -30F. Starting the 220D was way easier than the Cessna. That bird really jumped off the ground once we did get it warmed up though!
