Re: [MBZ] OT - New computer, switching keyboards

2014-10-30 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
So I'm going to go 180 on you and a full on different direction. My opinion
is to get a mechanical switch keyboard and then get double shot keys. Yes
the boards can be a little pricey (mine was $129) but the double shot keys
will never fade. As the letters are a physically different layer, not
paint, silkscreening or sticker, you'd have to completely wear away the
entire key to lose the letter.

You might not have the Windows key (usually between control and alt), that
would be a loss as it is used for a lot of keyboard shortcuts. The other
keys are usually just fun keys, I've seen:
- volume up and down
- play, pause, forward, reverse
- the HP web site
- random sites that paid for a dedicated key (Yahoo, MSN)
- start a specific browser
- start a specific music player
- start Windows Media Player

As long as you have the Windows key you probably will never miss any of the
new things - even when I'm on a computer that has the new keys I still end
up loading applications normally before I remember I have a special key.

my eyesight is excellent - 20/30 corrected to 20/20 with progressive

Pop an identical key off of each keyboard key (letter q for instance) and
see if they are exchangeable between keyboards. If they are, swap your old
keys over to the new keyboard, careful not to mix them up, and then
whichever new keys still haven't moved, those will need either a better

I'd suggest trying Apple's browser, Safari.  It's available for

Yeah there were some problems early on. I'm using the Safari 4 beta version on
my PC and Mac (G4 PowerBook running Tiger). I rarely use any other browser.
Unlike the first versions, I rarely encounter web sites that do not render
properly. The PC version of the beta crashed a lot at first, but mysteriously
has stabilized after a few weeks without my doing anything. I run it with
plugins disabled, popups disabled, and prompting before accepting any downloads
(as I would with any browser).

I launched Firefox on the Mac a couple of days ago, had not used for a while
and was stunned by how sluggish it was compared to Safari.

Also my note about customizing Safari applies almost exclusively to the Mac.
See http://pimpmysafari.com/ among others.

Windows.  It's faster than Firefox, but does not have as many add-ins if
 you're into customizing.

For me it depends on what website I am using. Firefox works better with OWA.
In other cases Safari works better. Of course IE works best of all... If I'm
on a PC.

I guess in the new version they fixed the take over your computer and steal
all your information security holes.
Apparently the first version of Safari on PC was a disaster...

Firefox is still better than Safari. I've played with Google's Chrome browser
some too, its okay but I keep coming back to Firefox.

Should work the same as in XP although your files are probably in tiles view
which I hate.
Click on the view menu, choose details, click in the name heading and they'll
be alphabetized.
Want all folders to show up in detail view? In XP you'd go tools menu folder
options view apply to all folders. I think Vista is the same or similar
though I don't have on in front of me to look at.

 Hi Ed,
It's really not that difficult. Each HD will have a diagram showing
where to place a jumper to make one HD the master and one the slave. Using
tweezers make it the easier. It really is easy. Once the jumper (a small
black piece of plastic) is in place, you can install the 4 connector power
wire and the 80 pin (??) data connection. Make sure you look closely at the
daa connector - there's a plastic fence in the center of the connector that
makes it only possible to install one way correctly.

Look at the HD before installing it and you'll see what I'm talking
about. The power cable will only install one way properly - the plug ad
receptacle have corners removed to make it only work one way.

Check with Wiki for more details or Google IDE/ATA drives and you'll see
 plenty of visual help//

If you want I can give you my phone # in case you have questions.

On IDE to get full 133MB/s (which is still theoretical max) speed you need an

I thought that the extra wires in an 80 pin cable were ground wires,
which isolate the data wires from one another to allow higher transfer

BZZZTT! WRONG!

Drives are drives, an IDE drive which is new to a chain must be set to slave no
matter if its a Mac or PC, its a bus requirement. SCSI drives work EXACTLY the
same on Macs as PCs as do SATA. In fact Macs have had over the years some
extremely convoluted rules about what drive can go in, how big it can be, what
controller it can use, etc.
Fortunately for all computer users SATA drives are really quite simple as you
put one drive on one connector. As long as you've got connectors you can add
drives.

In fact I want to pick up an SATA board soon as SATA drives are very cheap and
I want to add more storage to my video editing system.

Macs are easier -- I have hooked up all sorts of combinations of hard

trouble at all.

They also read Windoze and DOS disks and hard drives, although the

People hate to throw drives away. I have a customer on the west coast (a MAJOR
broadcast customer) who until very recently had a storage system made of up 100
9GB drives... They'd paid probably $1,000,000 for the system back in 2000 and
they'd worked pretty much flawlessly for ~9 years.
The problem was that the whole system was about the same size as 1 drive on the
systems we sell now for around 1/10 the price. The new system is also 4-10
times faster...

They finally upgraded because the drives started failing and replacements are
no longer available. They're quite happy with the speed and space improvements
on the new system but are still holding back final approval because they want
to be sure they get the lifespan out of this system...

Honestly, unless it's a relative new and large capacity drive, it's
probably not worth the trouble.  An old 2GB drive for example is hardly
worth bothering with, considering any new PC will likely have a 120GB or
larger hard drive out of the box.  That 2GB drive does not really add
much capacity, and if it's old its lifespan may be nearing its end.

I was thinking about installing the old HD internally into the new pc, but
someone told me, you have to fiddle with pins on the back of the HD to tell
the comp it's a slave drive. It all started to sound pretty confusing fast.
lol

My plan for the future is to keep most info on external drives, and the comp
pretty much free. Haven't decided if the next comp will be another desktop,
or take the jump and go laptop. For me, storage was always the biggest
issue with computers and what made me upgrade to newer stuff. Truth is, for
95% of what I do, a 10 year old pc works pretty much ok, other than you
become stuck with hardware that won't allow softward upgrades.

My old HD is 11.5 GB, but the REAL reason I connected it to my new computer
was to retrieve some files, etc., that I was having a hard time moving with
the drives separtated. Instructions with the new computer say, Use Windows
Easy Transfer. That's BS - 'can't do it from Win 98 without proper program
from Microsoft, who doesn't give a damned about Win 98 anymore. If I'd
known about the HD enclosure-move-to-the-new-computer immediately, I could
have saved a lot (several days) of hastle and more of the files, etc., that
I wanted.

Thanks, to Russ, Craig, Allen, Tim, Larry and others who instructed and
encouraged me to move the old HD.

E M pokieba...@gmail.com writes:

hmmm, I'll have to open the new computer up over the weekend and see if

So once the second HD is installed internally, the comp should see it as
an
extra drive, no other messing about needed? I guess if it doesn't work,
I

can always go back to the way things were.

I think me new comp is a slim case like yours Wilton, but there seems to

Re: [MBZ] OT - New computer

2009-04-21 Thread Peter Frederick
Actually, on a Mac all SCSI drives were 50 pin. Needed driver software for
anything but Apple rom drives (the one thing I really dislike about Apple), but
they were freely available elsewhere. Yes, you did have to set the ID, but
like IDE slave drives, that's a bus requirement. IDE was easy, although some
early IDE equipped macs would only see 120GB due to chip limitations.
Shipped with a 2GB or 4GB drive at the time, and there were no larger drives.

All in all easier than PCs -- once you got it live, it shows up on the desktop,
no messing about with drive letters and all that junk.

BZZZTT! WRONG!

Drives are drives, an IDE drive which is new to a chain must be set to slave
no matter if its a Mac or PC, its a bus requirement. SCSI drives work EXACTLY
the same on Macs as PCs as do SATA.

Macs are easier -- I have hooked up all sorts of combinations of hard
drives (SCSI, IDE, external, internal,  firewire, USB) with no
trouble at all.

They also read Windoze and DOS disks and hard drives, although the
programs will only run if you have the correct emulation software
loaded.

That happened to me too, with my new Compaq. My last eMachine came with two

1/2 hard drive bay, and two externally accessible 5 1/4 bays, so I can have a
2nd optical drive or a 2nd hard drive, but not both. And this is a full size
case, not a slimline! Then I tried to connect my backup modem and found out
there's no serial or parallel ports.
The final blow was when Windoze gave me a message box telling me that my USB 2.0
device would run faster if I didn't have it plugged in to a USB 1.0 port. So,
the geniuses at H-P think I have no need for internal storage, but all they gave
me to hook up external storage was some ten year old USB ports??? (either that,
or XP Pro set up the wrong driver for the USB ports)

Re: [MBZ] OT - New computer

2009-04-21 Thread LarryT

Hi Ed,
It's really not that difficult.

Check with Wiki for more details or Google IDE/ATA drives and you'll
see plenty of visual help//

If you want I can give you my phone # in case you have questions.

Take Care

computer, plug in the enclosure's power cord, turn on the enclosure's power
switch, and it comes up on the new computer screen as one of the new machine

get what I want off it, I'll format the old drive, and use it for backup or
 whatever.

Macs are easier -- I have hooked up all sorts of combinations of hard

They also read Windoze and DOS disks and hard drives, although the

Wilton's is installed in a separate case, external from the computer. He
was talking about taking the disk out of the old computer and putting it
in an external box that's connected to the new computer with a USB cable.

So once the second HD is installed internally, the comp should see it as
an extra drive, no other messing about needed? I guess if it doesn't

As you commented earlier, connecting a disk internally is harder. You have
the possibility of different types of data busses, as well as the need to
set jumpers on some types of disks.

Once you do have the disk connected correctly internally, you may have
more difficulty in assigning it a disk letter (i.e., something like E:\).
With the external disk Winders knows to add it automatically.

I think me new comp is a slim case like yours Wilton, but there seems to
be one or two free bays.

Go the way (internal or external) you feel most comfortable with.

Re: [MBZ] OT - New computer

2009-04-20 Thread Allan Streib
Honestly, unless it's a relative new and large capacity drive, it's
probably not worth the trouble. An old 2GB drive for example is hardly
worth bothering with, considering any new PC will likely have a 120GB or
larger hard drive out of the box. That 2GB drive does not really add
much capacity, and if it's old its lifespan may be nearing its end.

As others have pointed out, the Windows Registry is very important to
how Windows keeps track of where shared libraries and application
specific files are kept. However, it isn't a requirement for Windows
programming, and is up to the individual programmer to whether or not
their application will require the Registry to keep track of items.

Many Windows 9x programs utilized individual *.inf or *.ini files to
keep track of their items themselves. The new Google browser, Chrome,
was written to not only not make use of the Registry, but installs
itself directly into the Local Settings directory of the logged in
user. This way Chrome never triggers UAC and can be installed on any
system even if you don't have admin rights, provided that you have
write access to your own directories.

So the best answer in this question is: Maybe. *If* the application
didn't track itself via Registry, and *if* the application didn't
utilize a form of Serial Key installation that is managed in a hidden
file or the Registry itself, then yes. You can move the executable and
access it directly. However, in these instances you will probably have
to edit the local *.ini file to tell the application where it's new
home is or it won't be able to find supporting files.

Also, some applications are semi-self aware and can heal
themselves so to speak. Ergo, again, if there is not some overriding
Serial Key piracy measure in place and you move the executable to the
new machine (in fact, as long as the hard drive is attached via USB,
you don't even have to move the executable so long as the application
knows to now find itself in V:\MYDIR instead of C:\) it will see it
isn't in the Registry and attempt to add itself back in.

So for all applications you are wanting to use, have the original
install disks ready, try to run it, and the app will tell you if it
wants to run or not.

Regards,

EdB

If you downloaded a program and saved that download, you can install it
again, most likely. If a program was installed from CDs it's doubtful. The
registry would need to be modified and those changes are done during
installation.

But yes, it's very easy to backup files, photos, docs, etc by merely
cut/paste or copy/paste.

Once you;re sure there's nothing in the Windows folder you need, you can
get 10-20gb of space by deleting those files. But there's a lot of stuff in
there - make sure there's nothing you want. Like images..

Good luck -

Ed,

They make 2 types of the Docking Station.
One is Hot Swappable One is not.
I have one of each.
The Hot Swappable has a Button that when pushed Stops
the Power to the drive and ejects the drive. With this one
you don't have to Use Windoze Safely Remove Hardware feature.
The type that doesn't do Hot Swappable you have to use SRH then
Unplug the USB Cable Eject the drive Install new drive and hook
the unit back up to the computer.

These Units Only Supports the New SATA drives. DON'T try to put
an ATA IDE type drive in it. Won't work. I spent 2 hours straightening
the pins on an IDE drive that a client tried force into the Docking
Station.

Get rid of 'em or reinstall Win98 on the old machine and network the two
machines together for the times you need those drives.
For $20 you can buy a USB key drive with 1500x the storage of a floppy drive or
160x the storage of the zip drive and is more reliable than either while being
way smaller and easier to transport.

If you really love zip disks you could get a USB zip drive, I bet they're cheap

I can't believe the low prices on storage these days. I'm flying

Good plan, Wilton---I'd either copy the data on the Zip disks to the

readily accessible, or archive it to CD. Zip disks are not suited to
long-term storage (a polite way of saying that they fail at the drop

but the drive that originally wrote to them, in my experience.

(Just realized I'm not following my own advice---I have a parallel
port Zip drive, no currently active computer with a parallel port,
and some old data that I just might want at some point lying around on
Zip disks! Better rectify that...)

Ah, thank you. To answer your questions:

Can you use a Floppy drive? No.
Can you use a Zip drive? Is it internal or external? But most likely No.

At least not *inside* the case.

The reason is that the motherboard you have is of the Non Legacy
variety. It has no Floppy nor IDE headers. Both your Optical Drive and
your Hard Drive are SATA, and since it is a slimline system with only
two serviceable bays, there are exactly two SATA connectors on the
board.

Now. With that out of the way. You can purchase a USB powered floppy
drive if you absolutely have to have a floppy. However, the Macs
haven't had a floppy in over a decade, and I can not tell you the last
time I *needed* to use a floppy. With USB keys, fast networks, and
optical (CD/DVD) burners, data is more portable than ever.

As far as the Zip drive is concerned. If it is one of the old external
SCSI models, you *could* put a SCSI card into this machine, but only
by purchasing a newer PCI-E model SCSI card. That could be cost
prohibitive. I think they had some USB Zips there at the end, but
you'd have to find one of those if that isn't what you already have.

If it is an internal Zip, you could use an external drive housing made
for a 5 1/4 size optical drive. This would allow you to convert IDE to
USB and with a 5 1/4 to 3 1/2 drive mounting kit it would all fit
together properly. I don't know of any 3 1/2 sized external cases that
have open bays, most of those are for hard drives only and as such you
wouldn't be able to use the disks as they are closed off.

I agree with the statement someone else made in another thread of
these posts. Keep the old machine, get a small network going, and when
you need a file that is on one of those media transfer it from the old
machine to the new.

It's a very interesting motherboard, actually. According to the spec,
you should have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400 Dual Core processor. But that
board will handle the AMD Phenom Quad-Core should you want to upgrade.

Yup. Just have to transfer the old drive to an external case and plug
in it, Vista will recognize the FAT (File Allocation Table) structure
of the Win98 drive and you'll be able to use it as if it were
internal. Though, I seem to remember you saying earlier that you've
seen USB keys that dwarf the size of the HD in the old Win98 box.
Monetarily, you might be better off to transfer everything to a USB
key instead. (Though I think you said you were having some problems
getting a USB key recognized on the old system, so that might be
viable.)

You should be able to pick up a drive case for around $20 or so.

Re: [MBZ] OT - new computer

2009-04-13 Thread E M
Just wanted to thank you for all the posts. I'm going through much the same
thing as Wilton is at the moment, with both a newer HP machine, and trying
to pull stuff off an old machine, with an old 1.0 usb, and a CD driver that
doesn't burn. Once it's all transferred, I'll burn everything to CDs, and
not let some of the hardware get so old.

The old machine works fine, but it just became more trouble than worth.

thanks again,

Re: [MBZ] OT - new computer

2009-04-13 Thread LarryT

Hey Wilton,
Those external enclosers are great - They're available in 3.5 for
desktop drives and 2.5 for laptop drives. There's also a Docking station
that allows ou to plug either size in, then run a USB to the computer. I've
got all of my old surviving HDs in enclosures - they make great places for
storing things.

Try to find the ones that get their power from the cmputer rather than
requiring a seperate power supply. Sometimes all that wiring running across
the floor can get hazardous.

Good luck -

2009-04-13 Thread LarryT

Hi Ed,
You seem incredibly knowlegable about computer stuff! Maybe you can
help me? I have a new Toshiba laptop that came with Vista. I'm not a
happy camper and want to install XP. So, I thought it;d be simple to wipe
the hard drive and install the new OS. Not so fast. The installation SW
won't recognize the SATA disk drive - and the *only* way to get the SATA
driver into the puter is with a freakin floppy drive. I've found a way so
I will not need a floppy - by using nLite to integrate the driver into the
XP install discs. But that's another story.

I'd like to find a way to make sure the driver I found will work
properly? Can you describe something that might work? One more thing -
would Ubuntu or Fedora get around this problem?

If you're too busy to bother just say so I'll find the answer
somewhere else --

Thanks -

Wilton,

That would work just fine. Also, it may have been mentioned already,
but there are also external drive docks that plug into USB, and
accept an IDE hard drive. The difference is the dock, once you are
done with the drive you can pull the drive and drop in another. Though
you have to shutdown the computer to switch out drives, it's usually
easier than taking a case apart to load another drive.

So, I thought it;d be simple to wipe the

recognize the SATA disk drive - and the *only* way to get the SATA driver

XP has had 3 service packs, making a total screw up of 4 operating
systems. I don't believe SATA was available when XP was first
released, and maybe not even XP SP1. However, if you can get ahold of
a disc with XP SP2 or XP SP3, the license code you have should allow
you to install the newest version that *does* include SATA support
natively.

into the puter is with a freakin floppy drive.   I've found a way so I will
not need a floppy - by using nLite to integrate the driver into the XP
install discs. But that's another story.

Well, you could always SlipStream the XP disk yourself. This
requires you to copy all the .CAB files from the disc you have to your
hard drive. Then you can install Service Packs 1-3 directly to those
files. Burn a new disc and install from that. It *should* be the same
as trying to install with an OEM version of XP SP3, which *should*
give you SATA support. Personally, I've always preferred a pressed OEM
disc to a burned disc. I've had some older machines forget how to
read a burned disc halfway through an install, even though it installs
perfectly on another machine.

I'd like to find a way to make sure the driver I found will work properly?
Can you describe something that might work?  One more thing - would Ubuntu
or Fedora get around this problem?

Linux, at least any newer distro available, will have no problem with
your SATA drive. But you need to really look at all the gear in the
laptop before you move to either XP or Linux and make sure that all
the gear you need will have drivers in either OS.

If you're too busy to bother just say so I'll find the answer somewhere

Do you know which Service Pack of XP you are attempting to install?

So, I thought it;d be simple to wipe the
hard drive and install the new OS. Not so fast. The installation SW won't
recognize the SATA disk drive - and the *only* way to get the SATA driver
