I used to have a BB. Since they moved to touchscreen they seem to have
taken a dive in everything I used to like about them.

There are many email clients for Android. I actually prefer the native
Gmail app, I think Max was using k9,

I tried K9. It doesn't play well with Hotmail.

For Hotmail you might consider a Windows phone. They seem to be well-liked
by their users, and are oddly cheap on Craigslist.

That said there is a Hotmail application (sorry, Outlook.com) for Android:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/outlook-to-go

Seems to be written as well as any other Microsoft application based on the
rating. :) There are also other hotmail-specific apps in the Play Store.

There are others, but I haven't investigated them much since I'm used to
  the Gmail app now.

Can you use the gmail app with email other than gmail?

I don't think so, sorry. :( The gmail app is a Google proprietary
application, so unlike the Mail app it is not open-source.

Best,
Tim

When my Blackberry died I could not justify the purchase of another one. I
consider the platform dead. I bought and iPhone 4S and haven't looked
back. The iOS sandboxing is generally secure. The company I work for will
require a special app for Android phones to pretty much do the same as iOS
does out of the box.

In the native gmail app, reply, then hit the respond inline button on the
right. That will let you edit in the conventional way, with standard
prefixing.

I now know how Max struggled with email on his Android phone. Guess I'll
be sticking with the iPhone or maybe a BlackBerry Z10.

Download an app that's not Google. Google's email is designed to handle
threaded view expecting that you will open up the quoted text.
Boomerang Android app is in beta and I've suggested the quote feature.
See

I'll be getting a tablet soon, and would also like to see this feature.

Hey Luther, when you go tablet shopping, look carefully at the Acer Chromebook.
It's under 200 bux and runs rings around my wife's tablet.

I already have a Thinkpad x201, which is quite portable. I'm looking
specifically for a tablet.

I would think it had cheap glass. I had an Iview tablet for about four days
before the glass broke from it falling on a padded, carpeted floor. Stick with
the name brands that have Gorilla Glass by Corning.
