Re: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-13 Thread LarryT
I know the customer pays for shipping - hell, the customer pays for
*everything* - but to think it costs the vendor nothing is incorrect. If
the S&H were a line item like everything else it would be easier to define
and control - whenever a vendor offers "Free" shipping, it's true to say the
customer pays, but the vendor also must "pay" a part. Actually to say the
vendor pays is not accurate - actually it comes from his profit area. Also,
with the internet it's possible to check prices cross a wide range of
vendors - even though the parts are nopt comparable - so you might get a
quote on a widget amplifier for $200 from Rusty and another quote for the
same part name for $75. But you have no way of knowing that Rustys parts
are made in Germany (likely by a Turk working on a production line ;-) and
the other vendor is buying his parts from China made by who knows. So,
while it looks like you are doing comparison shopping you are only going
half way. There's no way of knowing the true quality until the parts is
installed and works or doesn't work. If it works, fine - at least for a
while, if not, I would bet Rusty is easier to deal with that some other
people - especially eBayers who disappear frequently.

So, while it says Free Shipping it is built into the price - which the
customer pays but the vendor *has* to make money or he won't be around very
long. Hopefully, the pricing is something like this - cost of part - $60,
overhead (advertising, office space, phone, etc) $10, free shipping $5,
profit $25 - total $100. If the S&H increases as it does frequently the
shipping cost might go to $10 and profit will go down to $20. Total price
stays the same. Same thing happens when the rent or insurance goes up -
profit goes down or price goes up. And with those websites featuring
Chinese & other parts offering split second pricing, it can be difficult for
Rusty to raise his price everytime UPS raises theirs - also, Rusty matches
other internet prices putting more pressure on him to keep prices down.

Basic business stuff. If any of you ever want to open or run your own
business you need to understand the basics. Otherwise the doors close
pretty fast.

Take care --

Tom put those in the envelope. None of our vendors will give us that type of

Gotta put in a BuyMBParts plug here.

I occasionally (normally?) buy just what I need. Last time, it was four glow
plugs.

I simply asked Rusty on the phone to ship cheapest possible means, and he
dropped them (or someone dropped them) into a padded envelope and sent them
to me 1st class mail. ... $3 shipping vs. arm/leg UPS charges.

Service like this you can't put a price tag on. I think the MBA word for it
is Good Will.

Re: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-12 Thread Tom Hargrave
"Free shipping" is based on order amount because "free shipping" is used
to motivate customers to buy more. It's the same with my business. I
offer $10 off any order $125 and up or $25 off any order $250 and up.
And because of these specials, the majority of my orders fall into the
$125 - $150 and $250 - $300 ranges.

I used to do the same with orders to Rusty when the 300SDL was my main
driver. I'd order parts and would add in oil & fuel filters to reach the
"free shipping" point. This really is the best way to order from Rusty
anyway, regardless of who is really paying for shipping. Once you pay to
ship the part you need, you pay very little extra to throw in a few
filters and a can of diesel purge.

Tom,

You are right on target! Remember TANSTAAFL?

"Free" is one of the most overused terms in all advertising! The
more appropriate statement would be "Orders over $99 shipped at no
direct charge to you." We all should know that those $'s are
somewhere in the "cost of doing business" and incorporated into "mark
up".

Personally, I would rather just pay the product price plus the going
UPS/USPS/FedEx shipping cost.

As a business owner, I certainly would want to know how much my "free
shipping" costs are (% of total $'s of orders over $99) and spread
that cost when pricing my products.

One more thought - Actual shipping costs are based on weight and
volume (size of box). Why is "free" shipping based on order amount?
Just an inquiring mind!

Take care,

Chuck

I handle my online shiping issue by offering $$$ off orders over $125.
But even with this, I still get "will you give me free freight on this
order? XYZ company will."

I always respond with "No problem at all but let me adjust your price to
their selling price first and remove the discount I just gave you."

Some still don't undertstand and I ask the m to shop at XYZ company.

Re: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-12 Thread Gary Hurst
you pay for shipping with money. how much i can give you in shipping has to
do with how much i get from you.

you know prices so you know what to do to get free shipping. how would you
figure out when it is free based on weight and volume? how would I?

i would prefer you paid actual shipping as well, but that is harder to do
when the paradigm from the big guys is "free shipping." even at $99, we
would get killed any time you order coolant or exhaust. we largely deal
with this by negotiating flat shipping fees with vendors as they are better
able to pool this risk given their higher volume.

as for prices being "padded" to cover shipping costs, I wish it were that
simple. prices are really more a function of the competitive market than
any sort of recovery of costs and a fair profit. if we need to sell
something for 12 bucks to make this "fair profit", but johnny come lately is
selling it for 9, we are simply not going to be able to sell it for 12 to
most customers, even many of our most "loyal" ones.

this is why i find it ironic when people criticize walmart as everyone seems
to want to be playing the walmart game. the real challenge is figuring out
how to give a customer base that insists on walmart pricing with worthwhile
service. the struggle is being "mom & pop" in a walmart world, while being
sandwiched by big corporate types on one side and fly by night guys on the
other. every dollar spent spent with either of these damages the few
legitimate small vendors who can provide you high quality service at low
prices over the long term.

outside of any personal interest i have in this, i have to encourage you to
support what is left of mom & pop as we will not be happy when we kill them
all off and have only walmart to turn to.

[MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-12 Thread Chuck Landenberger

Take care,

Chuck
