Re: [MBZ] OT OS

2017-10-25 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

I was trying to think of that story, it is a good one.

--R

There "is" a definite way but it can be pretty cruel.

A "high society lady", who lived in a small town, decided to pitch a party for the other "high
society" folks. She sent her part time maid out in the woods behind the house to pick mushrooms for a
dish she was preparing for the party. After the dish was cooked she put some of it in the food dish for Old
Spot, the "backyard dog", to be sure none of the mushrooms were poisonous.

That evening the meal was served to her guests and she received many
compliments on the mushroom casserole.

She had, however, forgotten to check on Spot so she asked the maid.

"He's dead", said the maid.

The lady went into a panic, told everyone the mushrooms must have been
poisonous, and called the towns doctors who rushed out with stomach pumps.

After all the guests stomachs had been pumped and they had left in a dark mood, the maid
came into the kitchen and said, "You know, ma'am, that car that hit Old Spot didn't
even slow down."

Still, feeding questionable mushrooms to a dog is a pretty good test of whether
they are poisonous or not IMO.

There "is" a definite way but it can be pretty cruel.

A "high society lady", who lived in a small town, decided to pitch a party for
the other "high society" folks. She sent her part time maid out in the woods
behind the house to pick mushrooms for a dish she was preparing for the party.
After the dish was cooked she put some of it in the food dish for Old Spot, the
"backyard dog", to be sure none of the mushrooms were poisonous.

After all the guests stomachs had been pumped and they had left in a dark mood,
the maid came into the kitchen and said, "You know, ma'am, that car that hit
Old Spot didn't even slow down."

Still, feeding questionable mushrooms to a dog is a pretty good test of whether
they are poisonous or not IMO.

Yup. My "plot" didn't grow any this year. Probably 'cause it was
too dry at their usual time. Chanterelle mushrooms are also easy
to identify and easy to avoid the one possible poison look-alike.

I also watch for puffballs and chicken-of-the-woods.

My father used to pick wild mushrooms. He said that they were ok unless
they did not smell good.
They did not kill him so I guess he only ate ones that he thought

Re: [MBZ] OT - OS X 10.10 Yosemite on a MacPro 1,1

2014-10-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Ed,

I have an ATI 5870 PC card that has been flashed with firmware that will allow
it to run on a Mac. ATI was Apple's pick of graphics cards for many years,
although the only real difference between an Apple branded one and a regular
card is the firmware and the ability to display a boot screen, which the PC
cards won't do - sort of. If I want a boot screen I just have to plug one of
my Cinema Displays into the DisplayPort output on the card and I can see the
gray Apple EFI screen and the boot menu.

Because of this the Apple branded cards are significantly more expensive, but
functionally the same. There's a guy in Illinois who has a business that does
nothing but flash ATI cards with the Apple firmware and sells them for
significantly less.

As for nVidia, many of their regular PC cards will work right out of the box in
a MacPro if you're running OS X 10.7.5 or later, however, without special
firmware they won't display the boot and EFI screens. nVidia does write Apple
drivers for these cards so they will run on a MacPro, and Apple supports some
of them as well, so it's an easy way to have a pretty decent high powered
graphics card in a piece of legacy equipment.

There is a caveat, however

The later video cards require more power than the MacPro's power supply can
provide, so if you go really high power graphics-wise you'll find people
installing secondary power supplies i the second optical drive bay, for
example. Not a kludge, but something that will be necessary of you go that
route. Well documented and many DIY kits are around for this, too.

There is a really good thread on MacRumors covering just this topic, and while
it's pretty lengthy, it's got a lot of good information. I have it subscribed
as I was going to go this route until I found my ATI card:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1440150

Let me know if you have any other questions. Glad to hear another legacy
machine is being brought back to life.

Dan

[MBZ] OT - OS X 10.10 Yosemite on a MacPro 1,1

2014-10-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
For you Macheads out there, I just installed Yosemite on my MacPro using a
custom bootloader. I’ve used the same means to do so with previous version of
OS X that weren’t supported by Apple for my “antiquated” hardware - a MacPro
1,1 upgraded to 2,1 firmware with 14GB of RAM, four drives (boot drive is a
128GB SSD), ATI HD 5870 with flashed firmware and dual 23” Cinema Displays.

Yosemite is running great from a secondary drive and I’ll continue to run it in
parallel with Mavericks for a week or so until I’m convinced it’s stable. At
that point I’ll move it on to the SSD and run it as my primary operating system.

The bootloader approach to installing Yosemite is pretty simple and can be done
by just about anyone. Earlier OS versions using Mavericks have been automated
by a developer with a utility he wrote called “SFOTT”, In this case all you
need is a copy of Mavericks and a USB drive and you can easily load Mavericks
on a legacy Mac that isn’t supported (by Apple) for Mavericks.

He has already started the process to make SFOTT work with Yosemite but has
some work to do for it to work with the golden master release.

If you have questions about this drop me a PM and I’ll be more than happy to
assist. This whole arrangement of supporting older OS’ on legacy hardware has
been great - I have a fantastic piece of hardware that can run the latest
operating systems without issues.

Better searches with Spotlight, annotation in email, DuckDuckGo as a search
engine built in, the “Handoff” feature, and the ability to have private
browsing tabs in a separate window.

The handoff feature is probably the least useful, as it only works with other
iOS devices, but it’s still nice.

Re: [MBZ] OT - OS X 10.10 Yosemite on a MacPro 1,1

2014-10-25 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Think it may work on a macbook 1.1 or Macbook pro 8.1? Both have
maxed out memory according to OWC.

For you Macheads out there, I just installed Yosemite on my MacPro
using a custom bootloader. I've used the same means to do so with
previous version of OS X that weren't supported by Apple for my
antiquated hardware - a MacPro 1,1 upgraded to 2,1 firmware with
14GB of RAM, four drives (boot drive is a 128GB SSD), ATI HD 5870
with flashed firmware and dual 23 Cinema Displays.

Yosemite is running great from a secondary drive and I'll continue
to run it in parallel with Mavericks for a week or so until I'm
convinced it's stable. At that point I'll move it on to the SSD and
run it as my primary operating system.

The bootloader approach to installing Yosemite is pretty simple and
can be done by just about anyone. Earlier OS versions using
Mavericks have been automated by a developer with a utility he wrote
called SFOTT, In this case all you need is a copy of Mavericks
and a USB drive and you can easily load Mavericks on a legacy Mac
that isn't supported (by Apple) for Mavericks.

He has already started the process to make SFOTT work with Yosemite
but has some work to do for it to work with the golden master
release.

If you have questions about this drop me a PM and I'll be more than
happy to assist. This whole arrangement of supporting older OS' on
legacy hardware has been great - I have a fantastic piece of
hardware that can run the latest operating systems without issues.

2014-10-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Memory isn't the limitation - the big issue is 32-bit EFI vs. 64-bit EFI. The
machine has to have a processor capable of doing 64-bit operations. That would
me the minimum processor would have to be an Intel Core2Duo. I think your
Macbook 1,1 only has a CoreDuo processor. Not familiar with the Macbook Pro -
look it up or just check the About this Mac in the Finder to see.

If you want to do Mavericks on the MBP I can point you at a very easy way to do
it with nothing more than an 8GB flash drive.

Thanks Chuck.

It got it figured out when the fellow I loaned my disks to brought
them back. Did not use them. I was in the middle of using the
powerbook G4 install disks when he arrived. Both had 10.3, so I was
able to get that in and then do the tiger install.

[MBZ] OT -- OS X panther disks to borrow

2008-07-19 Thread Redghost
Got the iBook from OWC and idiot that I am, I loaned out my Panther
disks to a fellow I sold an eMac to. He has not returned them yet,
and I would like to upgrade the OS on the book.

Really stupid part is I have the Tiger upgrade disk, but need panther
to upgrade from, and the ibook only has Jaguar.

Do any of the mac cognoscenti have disk to spare for a day? Will
send it right back as soon as it loads on the ibook. Pay shipping
both ways.

thanks
