Re: [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering
Sorry it didnt work out for you Scott. I just updated mine yesterday. Followed the instructions in the thread and it worked fine. I am on Spectrum cable. I run a cloud key but I do all this from inside, so that should not matter. Just putty in and cut and paste the commands. I am not super savvy about this stuff so cannot really comment on your issues. Re: [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering
Karl, et al., Wanted to give feedback how this turned out. At first, I tried to use OpenDNS which is super-simple; just point the router to the OpenDNS IPs. After MUCH frustration, I discovered that Spectrum/Time Warner (commercial account) hijacks DNS requests (no matter how the router DNS is set) and points them to Time Warner servers. It may be possible to opt out of this hijack situation but so far I haven't found a Spectrum tech that can/will opt me out. I had a spare Unifi Security Gateway (USG) on hand so I'm using that. The USG OS (same as EdgeRouter) includes SquibGuard which does DNS filtering. In the USG, SquibGuard uses SSH command line instructions, at least until the Unifi Controller GUI can do this (maybe not in my lifetime). In retrospect, an EdgeRouter would have been a better choice because the USG requires a Unifi Controller software patch (.json file) or the filtering setup won't survive provisioning cycle. Thanks for the help but I was boxed-in by Spectrum and the existing Unifi hardware and that limited my options. Re: [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering
Honestly if you read that thread I linked, it tells you all the steps. If I can manage it, anyone can (I have zero experience with this stuff apart from trying to run openfoam on starcluster from a linux desktop awhile back). I think I used Putty and just executed the commands from that thread. Unifi mobile app and web interfaces are great/simple and give you good analytics. You can block individual devices. I shut my kids ipads off all the time from work and turn them back on for school on the morning, for instance. You can have it auto update the blacklists with a script so it persists when the device updates itself. Personally I like blacklisting for a church site. People can look at youtube and fb somewhere else. On Tue, Aug 25, 2020, 11:36 PM Scott Ritchey via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Kark, Thanks. Get a pi hole. I run something similar at home on a unifi security gateway: https://community.ui.com/questions/HowTo-Ad-blocking-using-dnsmasq-d-instead-of-etc-hosts/1598a96d-28af-4f3f-ab96-97bccdb897b3#M66463 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi-hole Anyway you can block whatever you want. E.g. facebook, youtube. It is a scorched earth approach but it works well. You can configure it to auto update using various lists of ad servers and then customize website lists. If in a church, you should post a sign that internet access is restricted in case any docs are communicating with patients etc by internet so they can plan to be out of reach. Not such a bad thing, really. Just need to notify. Something like "restricted internet access only". Re: [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering
Only thing I can suggest is: 1.) Set up a password that’s simple and tell the congregation what it is; or, 2.) Get a consumer grade router in line with the existing access point and use it’s parental controls feature to filter. I’ve got an Asus router I use for my internal network and it’s got parental controls and filtering available as an option. -D > On Aug 23, 2020, at 2:38 AM, Scott Ritchey via Mercedes > wrote: > > The school's hot spot is on their own LAN, not my problem. > > There are many functions other than church services, typically in the > fellowship hall (church meetings, parties, weddings/funerals, > men/women/senior groups, etc.) where folks want their cell phones to work. > If they don't connect to the Wi-Fi those cell phone batteries go down fast as > the phones try to ping a tower transmitting at max power. > > I could add a password but then would need tell everyone. > > I already configured OpenDNS but still looking for something better. Re: [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering
The school's hot spot is on their own LAN, not my problem. There are many functions other than church services, typically in the fellowship hall (church meetings, parties, weddings/funerals, men/women/senior groups, etc.) where folks want their cell phones to work. If they don't connect to the Wi-Fi those cell phone batteries go down fast as the phones try to ping a tower transmitting at max power. I could add a password but then would need tell everyone. I already configured OpenDNS but still looking for something better. I plan to install a Unifi Security Gateway so I'm looking for a way to use that. There are many consumer routers that could be adapted and security appliances (without routing), like Circle. Re: [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering
Ask the school what they do. Ideally the school hot spot will be on the school network via a VPN. As far as accessing the passwordless guest network, you have that problem regardless. I'd suggest putting a password on it, or maybe setting up a captive portal like at a hotel. Depends how much you really want to manage it. Anyway, who is using their cell phone during church? [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering
Our church LAN has a “guest” SSID that does not require a password. This guest SSID is very helpful for cell phones because the aluminum siding blocks regular cell signals. So far, this was not a problem because we had few “outsiders.” Our ISP provider (Time-Warner/Spectrum) provides an ARRIS DG1670a modem/router, which does not appear to have any useful “parental controls.” Soon we will be a “hot spot” where school children can come to our parking lot to download school materials (if they don’t have high-speed internet at home). The school system provides the hot spot equipment but visitors will also see our church Wi-Fi on their devices. I want to avoid the situation where school kids (or others) access inappropriate sites, particularly on the church LAN. OpenDNS offers some filtering but only for “new” DNS requests and it doesn’t block anonymizers (like Tor). I know there is much computer expertise on this site so I thought I’d ask for recommendations. [MBZ] OT internet in the sticks
A while back I was discussing how I currently have a WISP that only offers up to 2.5mbps connection and I wanted something faster. I looked into Exede again and the problem there is the data caps, w hich appeared to be solved at least on the surface as they have 12mb connection that gets slowed to 1-5mb when you use up your plan data. After reading some forums they seem to be having problems. The speeds are getting slowed to .5 or less sometimes due to all the traffic, and even when you still have data in your plan you get slow speeds. I then looked around for other alternatives. I knew of another WISP in the area but was not sure they could reach me and was not sure if they were any good or not. My old one that I have used for years was not all that great with outages more frequently that I would like. So I go to this other companies website and it says they have service in my area, and their bottom speed package is 4mb and their top is 12 for $98 which is less than what Exede offers. So, they do a site survey and say I have a clear line of sight to the tower, but we are on the far edge of the towers reach so they are not 100% sure what I would end up with. They come today to do the install. Took about 15-20 minutes if that and it turns out I have great signal here. I am paying for 12mb their top package but have been testing mostly in the mid 20's with the latest test pulling down 27mbps and upload speed of 5.1. Pretty darn good. I am not sure if I will get throttled back to the 12 I am paying for eventually but at least I now have some real internet speeds. This other company has new equipment and the company I was with is still using old equipment, I guess that is the difference. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT internet
We had Verizon DSL until last week when I cut off my home phone which accidentally screwed the pooch for that. When I tried to turn it back on I was informed that Verizon is pulling DSL out of my town.Fortunately Comcast will service my house, I bought a cable modem from Amazon which arrived yesterday but my Comcast "install packet" doesn't arrive until tomorrow. The cable modem phones home but is thus far denied from playing nice with Comcast. Presumably I'll have to phone in and give them the MAC address... Fortunately I had to be in the office this week anyway. When I'm home I'm getting a lot of reading done. -Curt From: Joel Cairo via Mercedes <mercedes@okiebenz.com> To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Cc: Joel Cairo <buggeredbenzm...@gmail.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2016 11:19 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT internet I'm not sure how FIOS (Verizon's fiber-based service) is provisioned to the house, if you actually have a fiber drop at your interface or what, but "fiber running down the street" might be the trunk line that goes into the switch in your area, from there it goes out copper to your house, and depending on how far you are from the switch it might not be possible to get DSL (or Uverse VOIP/intertubes). [MBZ] OT internet
So I have this wireless WASP internet that runs 2.5mb most of the time but it seems like the towers are always going down. I had Exede sat internet at the old house for a while that ran 12mb and sometimes pushed up to 18 or so often but had a data cap, which I had the highest package at I believe it was 15 or 20gb a month. After you hit that it would slow you down to dial up speed. Then uVerse was available so we moved to that. When we moved here we went back with the WASP. I was just doing some checking today just because I was curious if anything had changed and now Excede has different packages, the highest being 30gb a month of what they call priority data which is your full speed. For $10 a month you can up the speed to 25mbps from 12. The thing is now when you go over your data cap you go on what they call the liberty plan which slows it down to 1-5mbps for the rest of the month until the next billing cycle. From what little I read most people are able to do most of their things they normally do and hardly notice the slow down, and can still do netflix etc with the new plan. I am able to stream netflix in 720 pretty easily and sometimes 1080 with the 2.5 connection I have now. Also from what I read people are usually getting about the mid range of that 1-5mb slowed speed. They say its faster during the day (the slowed liberty speed) but slower down closer to the 2mb range at peak night time. I am starting to seriously thing about going back to Excede since their slowed speed is about as fast as what I have now. Its a little more expensive though. Also, out were we do not have any sort of high speed broadband yet up and down my street on the side of the road are those little signs that say fiber optic route and I have one of those skinny phone junction boxes in my front yard. If they have fiber running down the street why do we not have DSL or uverse or something? ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

In a brief moment of email and tv, at the the Okiebenz Rancho Costa Plenty I have the wireless internet that runs 2.5 Mbps. Got DVD player hooked up and trying Netflix. It took a while to ramp up to it but it is running at 720p with 5.1 surround on this connection. For a long time it ran 480sd but then fit 720 hd and has only dropped down a couple of times from that. One was was when I was also running a speed test on my phone to see what bandwidth I had left, it got about .5 Mbps on that test. Now back to moving junk. Web browsing on Uverse is slower than on a Sprint cellular modem at around 1mps or less. Speedtest.net always reports about 90% of the speed I'm paying for. I think ATT prioritizes speedtest.net. Uverse video file downloads are deliberately throttled. ATT doesn't want to feed them to you any faster than real time because if you were streaming it and quit, anything you didn't watch was wasted bandwidth. For the most part their timing is good and Netflix/Hulu stream just fine in the living room TV while my niece is chromecasting a TV show in her bedroom and I'm browsing or downloading something on my computer. Aside from speedtest.net, I've noticed zero improvement since they doubled the speed I'm paying for. Re: [MBZ] OT internet in the sticks
Aside from speedtest.net, I've noticed zero improvement since they doubled the speed I'm paying for. Throughput is often not as important as latency, which is almost never talked about. Same as CPU clock speeds. We once had a 10-CPU Sun, which served a whole department. That thing ran very nicely, but its then-modest clock speed was a limiting factor on simulations. The thing was, until you had put 11 jobs on it you didn't notice any slowdown, and even then it seemed to slow down pretty linearly. They decided to 'fix' the situation by deploying a bunch of 'fast' 2-core PC's, also running Solaris, as a simulation farm. While they were faster when running 1 job, they essentially face-planted if you tried to run _anything_ else on them at the same time. No, they were not short on memory. It is my belief that the PC context-switching and MMU behavior was very much worse than what the high-end SPARC was capable of. Yes, more MHz. But in pretty much every other way they sucked. With modern web design there are dozens to hundreds of independent file-let transfers per page, most of them not all that large. The throughput almost doesn't matter, by the time one transfer gets going it's over, and it's starting up another one. Video transfers are inherently throttled, for JIT delivery. POP and IMAP email transfers are one-at-a-time, and most emails aren't individually all that large. About the only time the channel gets to even try to meet its bandwidth numbers is when doing a big FTP, an un-throttled torrent, or a speed test. And what percent of the time do you do these things? -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. I looked into it, and I think satellite internet is basically a last resort for people who's only other choice is dial-up or some other severely limited service. The latency is a killer for anything interactive, and the bandwith limits are pretty low in this day of streaming media. Also the two year committment, mandatory equipment rental, etc. all make it a pretty expensive option compared to standard cable internet or DSL. Allan Kaleb C. Better cache on your device. Hulu goes poop on me all the time. I just went from a 1.5mbps connection from my Motorolla canopy wireless setup that for the last month or so when it was working I got dialup speed, to a 12mbps connection with the new Exede by Wildblue sat system. I have been getting hits up to 15. WOW what a difference. If anybody is out in the sticks and needs high speed, this is the way to go. So this deal was on private property, there was no actual activity going on, no indication that it was actually set up to do what was alleged, the guns were legal, and the setup was dismantled before any authorities showed up (on private property). Perhaps the extended shell tubes made the shotguns illegal - we're limited to three shells while hunting waterfowl. Some animals aren't considered game, are are in 'open season' all year long (crows, coyotes) - feral hogs might not fall into that category though. Otherwise, I think it's a great idea!
