I seem to remeber reading that MB specs is 1% oil use versus fuel used, or in other worrds for every 100 litres of fuel it is OK to use 1 litre of oil. Don't plan to at the moment, I just like to have options if such should happen. Engine seems good and strong, oil pressure drops to 2.8 when hot and sitting at a light, otherwise it stays at 3.0. Delvac for the last 40k miles [since I have had it] I think things are good for now. Blow by is the compression gasses that leak past the rings. All engines have a certain amount but it increases as the engine wears. Now, at 176K miles, it seem to be going through one quart each 600 miles or so. It had been one per 1200 miles for the longest time. Nothing is dripping on the drive. The exhaust looks right but smells a little off (you know what I mean). At last valve adjustment (10K ago or so) there was no chain stretch to speak of. She's running well overall. I have seen that fellow as well. But today, I followed a '72 220D for a mile or two in north Seattle. Aside from the noxious black cloud coming out the tailpipe, it looked like a pretty decent car. Under all the dirt I could see fairly shiny dark green metallic paint, an undamaged and straight bumper, brakelights that were not full of diesel schmutz, normal rear camber and a darkish tan interior. And a big for sale sign in the rear window with no price. Tempting.
