Re: [MBZ] Oil pan Gasket sealant

You must use a sealant, the factory does. Some sort of high temp
resistant RTC, the black stuff, is what you want.

Glad you managed to get it repaired!

As luck would have it, I didn't think I had enough Hylomar, so did use
the High temp RTV. Now to get the alignment close enough to drive it
to the shop

As much as I love Hylomar and hate RTV, if there's a possibility of some
larger gaps remaining, I'd go with the RTV. Hylomar fills imperfections
perfectly, but it's not intended to fill gaps.

$150 of wleding and de-warping later, I'm about to install the
repaired oil pan on the 300SDL. (I'll post photos later). I had to
clean off a LOT of black RTV sealant - no fun. The machine shop
thought they got the pan pretty flat - the bolts should pull it up
the rest of the way.

So, I think I need to use a sealant - the question is, black RTV or Hylomar???

RTV it was. We'll see how good it is - one of the 10 bolts at the back
end of the pan was stripped - it's tight enough to stay in place (so
far), and I applied blue lock-tite. I'll be watching to see what
happens.

I did notice that the label on the pan gasket states that it's for
M104, OM603 and OM606. I wonder what other parts are common between
the OM603/6 and the M104?
