And yet he keeps on swinging!!! Went out today to look at the SL I missed getting a look at in January due to the Seattle style blizzard. Seller had to be out of town on work to Hawai'i instead of hanging out in the rain for three months. 1974 two tone 450SL. Body is one of these green STONEPINE GREEN DB862 CITROS GREENDB874 CALEDONIA GREEN DB867 With the top and hub caps in NICKEL GREENDB870 I think it is a good 5-10 footer. A few rock chips in the body paint, and some crazing/alligator on the hard top. Should survive a garaged life until I can amass a fortune to get a repaint with good clear. No exterior rust that I could find, Interior is another story. The boot is not really bad. Spare well is fairly dry and pretty rust free. The home of the battery on the newer models was a pool, and the drain was blocked, Clear that and it piddled right out. Will have to POR and paint. Foot wells are a disaster, but not rot through. Wire wheel and brush to get the rust gone and then POR-15 to seal it. Shelf is dry without rust. Battery home under the bonnet will need POR-15 as well. No body damage at all according to the trusty magnet. Light make photons. No fogs. Wipers wipe, but not washer fluid. Either plugged nozzle or dead pump. Not a huge issue. Good front end with great steering. All new rubber bushings and Bilstein shocks. Tie rods and steering metal, box adjusted 10k ago. Sub frame was dealt with under recall. Pretty solid and no scary corrosion going on. Will need to paint the brake booster, air filter cover and other small stuff back to black. The rest of the engine compartment looks fine. It is 38 years old, but has seen maintenance. Even the hood pad is in good shape. I am going to have her visit my indy early this week and then make offer. He says he is firm at $3k, but I may be able to get a few pennies knocked off. clay On Mar 23, 2012, at 11:41 AM, John Freer wrote: > FWIW, here's a list of the upgrades to the 560SL from the previous R1076's. > > According to MB, the following are among the items that were changed > for the 560SL (only version 107.048): > > Different spring rate > Harder shocks with shorter travel > Larger torsion bar (up 1mm to 26mm) > Front axle carrier (backwards compatible to previous 107/114/115) > Front lower ctrl arm (extended to change geometry; 124 balljoint) > Front upper ctrl arm (change of materials; replaceable balljoint) > Steering knuckle/arm (from 124) > Front hub (from 124/201) > Brake discs (from 124/201) > Steering (less travel, different pump) > Prop shaft carrier (124; changed shape of tunnel to accommodate) > Rear diff carrier (to get rid of the SL rear diff whine; better > isolation, different mounts, and subframe mts left/right are > different) > Axle shafts (from SEC, but no vibration dampers) > Fuel tank mount (because of the changed diff suspension) > A-pillars (they don't say what changed) > B-pillars (126 locks and strikers required redesign) > Doors (126 door handles) > Main floor (changed stiffening) > Rear floor (?) > Hood (cutout for larger brake booster) > Firewall (presumably for the booster) > Seats (more side bolstering) > > And of course, the front skirt was changed and they added the little spoiler. > > John > On Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 11:23 AM, Dan Penoff wrote: >> No, I haven't, and I probably should have clarified my response to cover the >> 450SL only, which is the model I know the most about in the 107 line. >> >> I researched and inspected literally 30+ of these back in 2003-4 when I was >> seriously considering purchasing a 450SL. In the case described below, I'm reasonably certain that the new chain on worn out sprockets was no better than, and probably worse than, leaving the old chain that was worn to match the sprockets installed. Now I'm left wondering what the crank and IP sprockets look like when we roll a new chain into a 617, but I'd bet money that all the sprockets on the 380 were in sad shape and the mechanic who replaced the cam sprockets should have known that the other sprockets were in similar condition. Chains should be replaced before they wear much, or the new chain should go in with new sprockets. Mitch. Dave in SoCal wrote: I took the advice below to heart when I bought my '83 380SL. FWIW, here's a list of the upgrades to the 560SL from the previous R1076's. According to MB, the following are among the items that were changed for the 560SL (only version 107.048): Different spring rate Harder shocks with shorter travel Larger torsion bar (up 1mm to 26mm) Front axle carrier (backwards compatible to previous 107/114/115) Front lower ctrl arm (extended to change geometry; 124 balljoint) Front upper ctrl arm (change of materials; replaceable balljoint) Steering knuckle/arm (from 124) Front hub (from 124/201) Brake discs (from 124/201) Steering (less travel, different pump) Prop shaft carrier (124; changed shape of tunnel to accommodate) Rear diff carrier (to get rid of the SL rear diff whine; better isolation, different mounts, and subframe mts left/right are different) Axle shafts (from SEC, but no vibration dampers) Fuel tank mount (because of the changed diff suspension) A-pillars (they don't say what changed) B-pillars (126 locks and strikers required redesign) Doors (126 door handles) Main floor (changed stiffening) Rear floor (?) Hood (cutout for larger brake booster) Firewall (presumably for the booster) Seats (more side bolstering) And of course, the front skirt was changed and they added the little spoiler. Maybe next week. I have three other SL I am checking out this weekend in that price range. I am finding that price range is full of compromised examples. I have seen others that are closer to 10k that are also "needs help". Re: [MBZ] R107 chubb
This would be superb investment. As the thought is, you purchase either a good body or good engine. Been looking at examples that can say neither. This seems to be in the top 95% in both. Rubber body seals are soft and good. No visible evidence of any water intrusion. Might even be original seals that aged well. Probably not survive another decade, but should do well until then. Keep the stuff fresh, and this will only become more valuable. Not been renovated or rebuilt. Should be due for one in 2020. Last major service was done 10k miles ago in 2003. Thousand miles a year with fresh fluids the records show. There is corrosion at the upper radiator neck joint. Might use that as negotiating point. Ask for the shop to do remedy work for poor coolant choice, hoses, radiator, thermostat and water pump. Fluid changes all around with new filters and complete interior and exterior detail so that any new leaks are visible. This while negotiating a reasonable price in case there are deep issues. Were I to toss this on a CC, I would turn around and make at least $5k in TX, CA, AZ or FL. GA or NY and New England I could ask $18k easy. This is that good. Leno or Classic Center inductee from what I can tell. clay On Mar 22, 2012, at 5:25 PM, Hendrik & Fay wrote: > Personally I would rather see a car in it's natural state rather than > detailed. > Oil leaks are not natural and can be used as a bargaining tool, coolant > colour depends on the manufacturer, Lemfoerders coolant for MB's is green. > Looks like you're in a poker game with the sales person, ya gotta figure out > if he is bluffing. Re: [MBZ] R107 chubb
Personally I would rather see a car in it's natural state rather than detailed. Oil leaks are not natural and can be used as a bargaining tool, coolant colour depends on the manufacturer, Lemfoerders coolant for MB's is green. Looks like you're in a poker game with the sales person, ya gotta figure out if he is bluffing. Guess it depends on how much you want this car, all you can do is give him your best offer and see what happens, or pay what they want. Although my gut feeling is that the sales fella is spinning you a line, with a reputable dealer you make an offer and then they say yes or no. It would be a bit underhanded for them to accept an offer and then show the car to someone else in the hope of getting a few more dollars. "there is an offer on the car, but no cash on the table, yet" makes me think that they have accepted that offer but are waiting for the offerer to get the money together, far as I am concerned if they accepted that offer, the car is off the market until such time as the time limit on that deal runs out. If the sales guy said to you that there is an offer on the car but we are happy to take your contact details, in case that deal falls through. then I would believe him. I don't know all the legalities but is it binding if you make an offer on a car and the dealer accepts, or does it only become legal upon signing of a sales contract? However I would think that a serious buyer would be required to place a deposit. I guess if someone looking to buy a 11k car doesn't have money for a deposit, they more than likely would not have the money to buy the car. Anywho, best of luck with it, the R107 is on my list of cars I would like to own, what model/year is it? BTW you can try and sell it to the missus as an investment, not sure but the 107 may well have hit the bottom of the depreciation cycle. Re: [MBZ] R107 chubb
Green coolant means a new radiator, and possibly a water pump. Oil on the hoo dpad might be from the breather having broken or come loose in the past - which also indicates that despite the low miles, the rings are frozen and leaking. Remember that unless they've been recently replaced, ALL the rubber under the hood is rock hard and leaking. There is a LOT of ruber in the intake system - I replaced all of it in the 450SLC.
