The only trucking I ever did was driving semi grain trucks in North
Dakota for a summer in the mid 70s.

business highlights:

 * $1.2 million in revenue with $450K in normalized cash flow.

 * Specializes in flatbed hauling.

 * Transports mostly steel coiled rebar, plastic pipe and building

 * Largest flatbed trucking company in its operating area.

No Affiliation Etc.  Must not be a lot of flatbed biz in its "operating

I'm used to much bigger companies running flats, like Decker and TMZ
hauling lots of John Deere green and drywall, etc.

Most of the Biz fer sale I see are in Jaime's country.   People trying

What a nightmare. My local dealership has been decent about attending to
basically the same issues. The worst thing that ever happened to me was a
check engine light and decreased fuel economy when two air charge hoses had
cracked. That cost about $900 to repair. The emissions-related recalls and
the replacement of the def blue heater element we're both handled under
warranty from Mercedes of North America.

The fellow I referred to has a 2014 GLK250 that is causing him grief. He
bought it new and it has only 120K Kilometers on it so around 75K miles.

He has had 2 NOX sensors and the DEF pump and heater replaced. The
dealer says it needs a DPF but none are available.

The DPF will be under warranty but apparently the NOX sensors and DEF
pump and heater are not and they are expensive.

There is also an issue with the SCR (catalytic converter).

It apparently sprays too much DEF under acceleration and the stuff
puddles in the SCR. It ultimately burns off and mucks up the NOX
sensors. It blows white smoke out the back when it burns off the DEF.

They have looked inside the SCR and say it is falling apart internally
and some of the material from it is coating the NOX sensors.

They did a DPF regeneration and a week later there is a code saying it
is almost plugged again.

He is not a happy camper. The dealer has not been able to resolve the
issues so far.

That, and the climbing up into it, and up into the bed. But if you're
still somewhat agile...

We use ours as a mobile bedroom. With kitchen, dining, and
bathroom facilities as necessary. Our time 'elsewhere' is spent
mostly not in the camper, except when sleeping.

Though truck campers are a tiny fraction of the RV market, there's
still a lot of choices in layouts, sizes, features, etc. They, like everything
else, have gotten kind of expensive lately. We paid $5k for our used Lance.
It goes on the truck I already had. Hard to beat that for RV-ing value.
My truck had the camper package, which is basically some overload leaf
springs and a heavy rear sway bar. Makes quite a difference in how it
handles that top-heavy load! Do NOT skimp on tires. Load range E or
better. I run 80psi on the rears.

Campers with slide-outs tend to be particularly vertical, so beware of that.
The floor of our Lance is basically the truck bed, so it's only three steps
up and in. I've seen many with more like a six-step staircase to get in.
Scary.
There are models with side entries, basically the staircase is inside rather
than outside. But for every such 'plus', there are minuses. Do your homework!

Just to be a contrarian: bedbugs. Apparently they're making a comeback.
Also, you have to consider the resale value in the RV calculus.

For us, though perhaps less roomy, the best on-the-road living value is
via a truck camper. Full queen-sized bed. Truck can go just about anywhere.
If truck kacks, you can replace it, and you don't have to pay the 'RV penalty'
when getting serviced.

Take along a toad. Something like a nice little SLK?

Re: [MBZ] Retirement Ride

2021-11-09 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes

After taking the cross country trip from Oregon to North Carolina, I now
understand why many RVers choose to stay in hotels on the road. It’s not worth
the time to set up every night just to tear down the next morning. With three
people and four Doodles, the RV was the best way to travel, but it was way
easier to just park the RV, drag suitcases into the hotel, get a good night’s
sleep and continue the journey the next morning. The motorhome worked well for
our one month stay at the campground before moving into our new house. The dogs
didn’t enjoy being cooped up without a place to run, but now, they have a large
yard. Once the permanent back yard fence is installed, they will have a WHOLE
LOT more room to run.
I hope you find the perfect traveling ride.

The answer should be obvious.

W123 turbodiesel station wagon with *at least* 380,000 miles so you know
that the car has been broken in properly. Preferably a former daily
driver, white exterior with a blue leather interior, third row seating,
roof cross bars, and rebuilt Becker AM/FM cassette with bluetooth
capability.

I have a lead on a vehicle that completely matches this description if you
are seriously interested.

I agree with Floyd. An ML or GL would be perfect for such types of travel, and
modern enough to be easily serviced just about anywhere.

While a W126 that’s well sorted and in good shape would be nice, if something
happens to it and you’re in bumf*ck wherever, getting it serviced will be a
challenge.

A GL or ML or a wagon, you can get all your impedimenta in any of them
without struggling, and tow something if you want on the SUVs, and take
a nap if you want (or if no AirBnBs about you can sleep in it).  The
bigger the better for highway miles and room to stretch your legs around
while driving.  Even the 211 wagon falls a bit short in the last measure
but the 163 ML is great in that regard, although noisier and harsher
ride.  The newer SUVs are much better in that regard though.  An AWD SUV
will get you in the back country if you want to explore off the beaten
track, or deal with snow and such if you are out in that, even rain too.

Good luck on the whole retirement thing. I've been retired for 5 years and
think it is great, but I do miss the friends and travel of my previous job

Hey Bill -
Good to hear you're enjoying your retirement - ditto on staying active -
it's too easy to settle into a routine that doesn't include enough mental
stimulation. I'm not really retired - am on full medical disability - my
problem is not having enough time to do all the things I used to do while
working full time. Now I'm home and can never get all the work done.
Strange... of course the pain and disability do interfer ...

Like you, I miss the people and places I used to be involved with and
all the different things I was exposed to.

But there's things that make up for it. My wife I have always enjoyed
each others company and now we can be together as much as we want. Except
she works full time now ;-( can't have it all -

Layoffs are what you make of them. I've been through 2 and in both cases came
out the other side better off than if I'd stayed.

My father in-law is due to be laidoff in October, he was notified last October.
If he stays until his last day he gets something like 56 weeks of severance, if
he doesn't he gets something like 36 weeks... In either case he gets 1 YEAR of
support through a job bank, resume classes, something like 20 credit hours at a
local community college and some other things I forget.
He's so upset about the whole thing he keeps saying he's gonna quit and they
can keep the severance. I've taken to replying with Yeah well, you could do
that but it'd be retarded. I'm sick to death of his poor me attitude about
the whole thing, the company is bending over backward for him and he's decided
they don't care about me merely because he's not needed. He's also trying to
say he'll retire and get social security but he's only 55 so he's not gonna
get squat.

This is the same guy who brags about how he's gotten 3% in his 401K for the
last 15 years because its in a bond fund. I love pointing out he's gotten 0% in
his 401K for the last 15 years (compared to inflation) because he's in a bond
fund where I've made more money in the last 5 years than he's got in his whole
401K because I took the time to go to college (which he was pushed to do by his
employer(who would have paid) but refused (!) and by using an aggressive growth

My 401K earnings look lousy right now but they'll come back before too long, in
fact I haven't checked but I bet they're on the rebound already...

Corporate America left me a little over 8 years ago. Now I'm a consultant
and I own an on-line kegging supply business.

Oh, and one of my clients is the very same company that canned me 8 years
ago. I work there 3 days / week for 30% more pay per (40 hour) week than I
made as an Employee. They are begging for a 4th day and I remind them that I
originally signed up for only 2 days / week.

Sometimes it sucks being laid off, or so some people tell me..

Thanks,

[MBZ] Retirement

2008-08-21 Thread RELNGSON
From my friend CS, recently retired NWA 747 Captain:

I had a bad dream last night.

In it was the FAA, crew scheduling, bad schedules, bad management,
self-serving union, unserviceable aircraft equipment, changing weather,
 freezing rain,
no extra holding fuel, ever-changing procedures, endless flight manual
revisions, dead heading in the middle seat, broken and lost luggage, nasty
passenger agents, crabby old flight attendants, all-nighters, foreign
 countries,
sleep deprivation, mergers, seniority squabbles, company threats, freezing
 rain,
food poisoning, no food, bad coffee, bidding, pulled away from my family for
weeks at a time, fleabag hotels, early get-ups, late cabs and maniac cab
drivers, bidding vacation, waiting for gates, weather, freezing rain, low
visibility approaches, aircraft de-icing, PCs,  Gestapo check airman,
 medicals,
commuting to and from work in unspeakable weather, freezing rain, the parking
lot from Hell, parking lot buses, inter-terminal busses, spring break,
Christmas rush, Easter rush, PA announcements, insurance, drug and alcohol
 testing,
noise violations, customs lineups, dry cleaning, terrorism, security passes,
rude (dumb as dirt) security personnel, high gas/oil prices, pay cuts, rush
hour traffic, freezing rain, that infernal alarm clock, crash pads, catching
cold away from home, lackadaisical crew members, sexual harassment threats,
flight attendants and co-pilots implying that they are a gift to aviation
 after
being there three years, back biting, gossip, cell phones, aircraft cram
courses, plus laying my job on the line several times a year with simulators,
endless procedural memorization and Annual Recurrent Training days ... did I
 mention freezing rain?

 Then I woke up.

. and joyously found myself still retired!

 Whew!!!

I have those occasionally, too. 'Bout the only thing on the list missing

And a little luck. I have a 401(k), but I consider it a form of
gambling, albeit one where the odds are pretty good. In my (admittedly
cynical) view, insiders still hold all the cards; there's been no
meaningful stock market reform. Also, no one's really sure what will
happen to the market when millions of retirees start to cash in their
holdings. It seems to me that we may see the market go into a long
stagnant period when that happens.

Even if the market does well, most experts say people my age will be
working into their 70s. They don't explain where we're going to find
people willing to employ 70-year-olds.
