Nope. No standard height. But my experience is that 14 to 20
inches [35 to 50 cm] from the ground to the top of the ball is the
most likely range. And I prefer the ball a bit high more often
than I want it low.

I like ETrailer - good info, text transcriptions of their
information videos, real information on their product - sometimes
more than the manufacturers websit, helpful people, and if you
happen to be near St. Louis MO, the have a will-call desk. They
don't always have what I need, but I do try to take my business to
them first.

1-7/8, 2, and 2-5/16 are the ball sizes. U-Haul uses only 2", I'm
pretty sure. 2 inch balls can be rated for quite a range in load
capacity, so be sure to get one "big" enough for your loads.

Also make sure the ball shank/bolt diameter matches the hole in
the ball mount. There are bushings to allow mounting in a hole
that's too big. I think shank sizes vary from 5/8" to 1.5".

Something like this can be mounted either way so it has a bit of a
of a drop or a very slight rise.

Here is a kit with ball, mount, pin, etc.
https://www.etrailer.com/Ball-Mounts/Curt/C45534.html

I like putting a rubber cap over the ball for storage 'cause I
always keep the ball well greased.

I was thinking of mentioning these after I sent my previous message.

But then you're stuck with a 3500lb ball mount in a 2" hitch.
But you get the smooth euro ball look.
It also hurts slightly less when you stub your knee on it.

Agreed, they are good. I bought a hitch for my Volvo from them, bolted
right up with no issues. Perfect fit. They also supplied a wiring
harness that plugged in to the factory taillight connectors, so no
cutting/splicing wires, and it has an independent power source so the
car's electronics are unaffected.

That works, or if you want flexibility this is a bit uglier and a bit more
costly:
https://www.amazon.com/MaxxHaul-70067-8-Position-Adjustable-Mount/dp/B008CE06ZA

If you don't already have the ball you might as well buy a full set, mounted
ball and hitch pin.

This is about the cheapest I know of today:

This is $24.47 at both Wally World and large wimmen world, and I believe it's
made in USA.
I was going to recommend a Curt Euroball, even going to offer you one of mine,
but Curt only makes Euroballs for 1 1/4".

Fred and I rented a tow dolly for my '98 Jetta that we pulled with my '03
Ranger. It vibrated badly if we went over 65mph. Turns out the tow dolly wanted
a 2" ball, the Ranger had a 1 7/8" (I think thats the next size down) ball.
Oops. Probably was also a problem when I was towing the '84 190D but on that
tow the weather was bad so I never wanted to go faster than 60mph anyway...

I have some straight (well they have a bit of drop, maybe an inch but

Re: [MBZ] Trailer hitch done

2013-02-07 Thread M G
My understanding was that the factory used the same bolts to hold their trailer
hitch on. In any case there is an expensive aftermarket hitch that uses the
same fastening with the addition of I believe one more bolt on each side
fastened to the under side of the main body channels on each side. Since I
don't intend to pull heavy trailers I'm pretty sure that the bumper fasteners
will be good enough. If needed I can always add two bolts to the bumper to give
it a bit more hold.

The hitch that came on my 300D is done that way. Two bolts to the bumper and a
couple to the bottom of the spare tire well. I did add a bit of extra metal
inside the well (4" x 12") to kind of spread the load a bit. I haven't had any
problems with that in the 7 or so years that I've used it. So given that I
believe that for the intended use my hitch will be at least as good.

Looks fine to me! My only concern is all the bolts to the body - what is on
the other side of the body metal? If just a nut and a washer, that is
considerably less substantial than a factory hitch.

No. It is more or less my own try. Still uses the three bolts on each

Yes, probably. It might be a vehicle limitation. It can be hard to find
solid enough attachment points for really heavy loads, on unibody cars.
Tongue weight is often sharply limited, too. My Volvo was rated for up to
3,300 pounds of towed weight but only 300 pounds of tongue weight, which isn't
very much for a trailer that size. (Generally you want the tongue weight to
be 10 to 15% of the trailer weight, for stable towing.)

Re: [MBZ] trailer hitch for 87 300TD

The ball/mount is indeed one-piece at 50mm. That is a limitation.

I think the hitch itself is rated for 1900KG. That's not to say that
MB has certified that 1900KG is a safe load for the wagons. IIRC,
Arne's caravan weighed in at considerably more than 1500KG though.

Re: [MBZ] trailer hitch for 87 300TD

2005-07-13 Thread Richard Hattaway
FWIW,

The hitch4less unit is a Valley...

I had a Valley hitch on my wife's car, which is not MB, but I was very
happy with it. It was one of the smaller, IE Class 2, hitches, but we
safely towed a 16 foot catamaran to the outer banks with it on a
'fairly' regular basis.

One of my issues on 'factory' hitches that I have seen is that the ball
appears to be welded permanently on the mount. I have 1 7/8 and 2 inch
trailers in the yard. So I require a receiver type hitch to have the
flexibility to change the ball size.

Might be ok if you're not too much a purist and can stand for the
diminished capacity. The factory coupling is rated at 1900KG trailed
load and disappears upon removal of the easily detachable ball head.
Think I'll hold out a while longer.

It does exist, Max. Trick is *finding* one on this side of the Pond.
I picked one up couple of yrs ago in hopes that it would fit my wagon,
but it'll take some modifications to the cross bar & acquisition of
the mounting kit if it's ever to be installed. Part numbers on this
one weren't at all definitive; I still don't know what model it was
intended for. Your best bet might be someone in Europe who's willing
to undertake a little legwork. I can probably pull up the appropriate
p/n's, but believe me, you won't want to pay for new.
