Picked up 7 quarts of NAPA house brand Dexron ATF today. I'll use that in the
first fill at least, and assuming the transmission doesn't grind itself up I
may use the M1 (already purchansed) down the road. Does ATF have a shelf life?

As far as I know that kind of snap ring does not have anything to
do with the B2 problem as that controls a band.

The crawling forward if the pawl is not engaged could very well
be caused by whatever the snap ring should hold. The part is now
dragging and making the car move forward. It is also possible
that the same is happening in gear and may cause lower fuel
mileage. Won't know enough about all that till the tranny is
taken apart. You should probably also have seen a lot of fine
aluminum filings in the oil and larger in the bottom of the pan.
The oil would kind of shimmer in the sunlight as you swirl it
around in the pan.

Agree, that's what I thought. I'm hoping there's enough of it
left in

place to hold for a while. Did the W116 have the transmissions that
were prone to the B2 piston failure? (Though this does not look like
any part of that as far as I can remember, having replaced one a few
years back in my W123.)

To clarify: the pawl is working, it's more like it's not totally
going
into neutral. There's still a bit of power getting to the output
so if
I am stopped on level ground, put the gear selector in Park, and
give it

some throttle it will roll forward until the pawl catches.

Will see what happens with fresh fluid and filter.

Unless these are rebuildable without a lot of investment in special

Surprisingly, the pan was very clean other than that broken ring caught

rather dark; its age unknown.

Given the evident damage I would not try to rebuild it unless you
have access to another tranny of the exact same kind as you will
probably encounter hard part damage, possibly even damage to the
tranny case where in some cases there are internal snap-rings
holding to the case. If there is damage there then that would
require a new case. All in all I would go with a rebuilt (Q) or a
takee-outee from a upull if cost is more important then your time

Oh! forgot to add. For an auto tranny rebuild there is a, in my

Having done 350's, 904's and 700r4's I don't want to even try one

Funny thing is other than seeming a bit noisy (gear noise, nothing really

AT fluid/filter change is not hard. Just messy.
Smurf gloves are your friend. Buy the ones at

I generally loosen the bolts at the low end most

the oil will drain out before I drop the pan.

That looks like a piece of an internal snap-ring. This would
usually hold a set of clutches and or a clutch piston in the case
or in a drum in the transmission. Could have broken from age or
damage to the ledges that keep the ring in place. Only a matter
of time till there is more damage and the transmission quites.
Possible cause could be shifts that are too rough due to too high
a shift pressure and cause the clutches or piston to bang against
that ring way too hard and breaking the land that it rests in.
Start looking for a new transmission it's only a matter of time.

The car should not be able to move in park unless the parking
pawl is broken or a tooth or two are broken off the shaft or drum
that it locks. Now maybe occasionally the pawl will not engage a
notch and the car may move a bit till the pawl catches in the
next notch.

Compared to the cost of a new transmission?

Of course the evidence that M1 will prolong the life of your
transmission is mostly anectodal, AFAIK.

Turbos can whine or shriek if there's an exhaust leak.

I'll double check, I have a new exhaust from the turbo back, though I

Really sounds like it's coming from the trans, low and up front. I am
ruling out the diff for now since the noise really seems too far forward
for that. Though noises can be deceiving...

Another thing I noticed, in Park the car still pulls forward a bit. The

until it hits the pawl.

How is the fluid level? I'd recommend changing the fluid and filter as the next
step.

I have the filter kit and fluid, just need the time... probably get to
it in the next couple of days.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? When low it can
cause a whine.

[MBZ] W116, noisy transmission/TC

2011-11-05 Thread Allan Streib
Took the W116 out on the road today... didn't go too far from home since
this was the first time I've really had it out on the road under its own
power. It drives pretty well. Tracks properly, steering feels good,
brakes are maybe a little rusty but working. I did notice that the
transmission, while it seems to shift nicely, is rather noisy, or maybe
it's the TC? A pronounced whine or gear noise. Checked fluid and the
level is correct, though I am planning to change it soon since I don't
have any records on when it was last done.
