I can't believe the number of Mercedes diesels around here that are priced around 4K that need AC recharging (probably need more than that), non-functioning power windows, even imperfect paint. 240D's around here have been affected by the biodiesel craze, so if it runs at all and can run on bioD, it's worth at least $3K. If it's a W126 you're after, those can still be acquired rather cheaply, anywhere from a $1000 running beater to $3500 for a reasonably good example. dont know why the 126's go cheaper than the 123's of the same years (diesels that is). My guess is that it's the size of the W126's that makes them less appealing. Perhaps, they're looked down upon for being the older person's car rather than the much more hip 240D. I really like the quieter W126. I don't think you fellows in the rest of the country understand quite how crazy the Mercedes diesel market is here in the Pacific Northwest. A few factors in combination---the discovery of biofuels by the granola culture (no offense intended as I'm kind of one myself), the old-car culture that already had a solid presence (thanks to our mild climate and unsalted roads), and the fact that there have always been more furrin than domestic cars on the West Coast---have created a perfect storm for 123 desirability. It's like the tulip mania in 17th-century Holland. Sell your 240D here while you can and retire on the proceeds! The upside, of course, is that for every boom there's a bust. In a couple of years when a wide selection of new cars designed to run on ULSD are on the market, all the flower children will be trading their 300Ds for diesel Accords, and the former will be available dirt cheap. Sadly, I suspect many of them will be in dire condition and need a lot of TLC. Judging by the number of 123 wagons I see dragging ass around town with blown SLS systems, many of the bio-crazy purchasers of Benzes are out of their depth, with neither the will nor the cash to take proper care of an old car. many of the bio-crazy purchasers of Benzes are out of their depth, with neither the will nor the cash to take proper care of an old car. There was a gray 300SD bouncing and clattering away at a red light here in downtown Portland the other day. My first thought was "Let me work on that thing!!" Some Diesel purge and an Italian Tune-up would be good, and if that didn't do it, $400 for rebuilt injectors plus recalibration along with a valve adjustment would have done a world of difference. Yea, I guess the 126 does still have a modern look to it where as the 123 is more classic now. I would be more interested in a W115 (either a '76 300D or a '72 220D) to accompany the 300SD. I'll be on the lookout for one in September when I've got some money saved up. Most tend to be in beater condition even for over $1K as a '72 220D came up for sale on the local Craigslist for $1700. http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/car/370755576.html Uh, NO! Point taken. Allow me to rephrase. With a three car garage and three drivers, I have: Wife's Buick Regal, her car and what she likes. Frigid AC (her basic requirement). Re: [MBZ] W123 Beater Review
Nicely encapsulated, Alex. Even NEW VW diesels are suffering from the craze. Such a disprepancy between the price of the gasser and the diesel. We took a hit buying our high mileage 190D at 4300 bucks. Your mention of a diesel accord struck me. Love it. I tell you, we are in diesel territory here on Bainbridge Island, WA. You can pretty much assume that when you see a set of VW headlights (even beetle) that you will soon hear the accompanying mild klatta. And often with the required biodiesel sticker. And there are so many 123s that we don't even nod at eachother as we pass. BUT, I, so far have the only 190 diesel that I have seen here. A fair amount of 190Es though. Brian Alex wrote: It's true, though. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Man I'd like to find a diesel Quantum some day. I know where theres a diesel Dasher (which I think is basically the same car) but its been sitting for at least 10 years and the son of the lady who owns it totalled my parents cars a few years ago so we're not really on speaking terms. -Curt Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2007 20:25:30 -0500 From: "Wonko the Sane" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] W123 Beater Review To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Point taken. Allow me to rephrase. With a three car garage and three drivers, I have: Wife's Buick Regal, her car and what she likes. Frigid AC (her basic requirement). Daughter's Chevy Cavalier, bought and paid for out of her checkbook -- she loves it. My '77 W123 (my baby) My '82 VW Quantum diesel, a true beater but 50 mpg, my "fun car." My '72 Honda motorcycle. One moped. Seven bicycles. Now, why would I want another vehicle on my insurance policy, even if it is a W123? - Moody friends. Drama queens. Your life? Nope! - their life, your story. Re: [MBZ] W123 Beater Review
Assuming its still there (I haven't actually laid eyes on it in like 12 years) I dunno what kind of shape it'd be in. The owner was the theater director when I was in highschool. It wasn't until I left that I realized what a controlling nutjob she really was... So other than the possibility of getting a probably destroyed car I don't particularly want to see her.. -Curt Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2007 10:00:49 -0400 From: "Levi Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] W123 Beater Review To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed So why don't you have it?
